I’m obviously not in the know, so I’m speaking of the fans, what most of us have talked about wanting. But to what I think your point is, Woody may not even have that plan, and he knows better than us right? I probably shouldn’t say “we” anyway bc I’m not a true fan since I won’t eat turds or give up testicles.

All said, I can’t imagine Bryson Tucker came here to sit. Mgbako definitely isn’t going to sit AND his natural position is the 4. So, are they the 3 and 4? And is that why the Louisville dude canceled his visit? I would hope the writing is on the wall, but Woody seemingly likes to shove square pegs into round holes.

maybe, just maybe, ‘we’ are on the same page.

Yeah, it’s a tricky proposition for us! We want to play 4 out, 1 in but Malik doesn’t fit this style. Don’t mean to dog on Malik, but we can’t play the way we want to with him on the floor. We need an athletic rim protector that can also shoot it decent and rebound AND a couple lights out shooters on the floor with Malik in the rotation. JMO.

who is 'we'? lol. The fans or Woody?

    Another incredible season.

    CTM:

    26-6

    28-4

    24-9 (Holmes missed 10 games)

    21-6

    24-8

------ 123-33 the last 5 seasons. One season ended by covid... the last 4 years-- 2 Sweet 16s (lost to UCONN on their home court, SC last night), 1 Elite 8 (AZ beat us)... and obviously last years debacle...

We will have finished Top 20 for a 5th straight year.

When some ask about what our expectations are for the men’s team, I’d say: THIS.

    -Mid 20 win seasons.
-Make it to the 2nd weekend more times than we don’t make it.
    -Top 3 or 4 in the B1G
-Best player gets injured? We still have enough depth to push through.

'24-'25 season may be a catch 22 for Woodson.

If he insists on playing inside out with MR at the 5,  the "out" will never happen. Cause Ware isn't on the roster for MR to throw the ball to. MR rarely if at all, passed the ball out to shooters. MM's points came from passes from Gallo, Leal, and X.

With a significant overhaul to the roster, it almost demands that he change the offense. And yet the past 3 years show that he won't. Ware had a decent outside game, and yet Woodson still refused to play 4 out, much less 5 out. Still had 2 bigs clogging up the middle with a cutter coming thru just to muck it up even more.

    Hence the catch 22.

In TJD’s last year there was a noticeable difference in how long he held the ball for in the post. He shot it, made his move or passed it much quicker (in comparison to previous years). He was quicker to recognize the doubles and got the ball out sometimes before they even came - which kept the opposing defense more off balance.

I don’t know if Malik can do that, is told to do that or will learn to do it….but I hope he does.

There is a difference between giving Malik a touch and playing inside/outside. He needs his touches, but he has to keep the ball moving or we become too easy to defend.

I have never seen so many teams go for laups instead of 3's at the end of the game. Trading 2's for 2's doesn't add up to closing the gap. So stupid.

It looked like that was painters strategy. He was heavily switching on the perimeter, and allowing drives. He didn’t want to give them any looks.

@tdhoosier with solid analysis on portal success this past year.  Not a great sign for the team IMO and as we have discussed here:

    https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/how-last-offseasons-most-portal-reliant-teams-fared-this-year-and-what-that-says-about-iu-basketball/

There are a lot of factors that contribute to the success of (or lack of) teams with a lot of transfers. I don't think it's impossible to build a strong 'portal team', but I don't think Woody is the coach to do it because his offense and defense has proven to be too hard to grasp for new players.

At this point, it seems like Woodson is back for another year. I’m curious what everyone’s thoughts are on what next year would need to look like to not move on from Woodson after next year. This isn’t about whether you think it’ll happen or not, just what would be good enough for IU to keep Woodson.

    IMO we’d need 3 things:

    1. Single digit seed in the tourney. Imo sneaking in as a double digit seed isn’t good enough.

    2. Some sort of recruiting momentum with high level guards/wings. Could be either HS or portal

    3. More competitive in high level games. 15+ point blowout losses to good teams shouldn’t be the norm.

I think other things would need to happen in order to accomplish those goals, like changing the style of play. But imo, that should be the minimum for a coach in his 4th year at IU.

Eek. Single digit seed? That's it? I personally think we need to be a 5 seed or better because we'll most likely be in the same situation next year: 6 or 7 spots will need to be filled though the portal. So, because essentially nothing is being built from the ground up with HS recruits, then Woody needs to prove that he can be a top 25 caliber team with 50% of the roster made up of transfers year in and year out.

Woody made his bed. He must lie in it. If this portal heavy strategy doesn't work, he has nobody to blame but himself because he's already set himself to be in the same situation in 25-26. And nobody has the patience to wait until 26-27, not even QB or the SImons.

From an article when he committed:

From the video I have watched, I really like Banks’ ballhandling skills for his size. He has a nice pull-up jumper, and what looks to be a nice shooting touch. All of that looks like a great fit for a Mike Woodson 4-out, 1-in type of offense.

Kaleb average 23.5 points per game as a junior at Fayette County High School. He also added 8.5 rebounds and shot 38% from the three-point line.

Was it Bruce Webber who was called the 'Dream Killer'? Hopefully Woody isn't the 'Shot Killer'.

Have no idea where to post this but I would think this is a positive sign of Mac returning?

Awkward to host a camp in April if you’ve transferred out lol

Not saying that this was the entire reason Liam transferred, but I'm sure it was a factor.

MM potentially coming back is a good thing though. A sophomore MM is probably better than a Freshman McNeely.

...BUT even better would've been MM at the 4 and McNeely at the 3 (who cares about rebounds). lol.

  10. So, the program trajectory is not going in the right direction after an abysmal season. I know we’re all wondering: why the 4th year? If the chances of turning this thing are low then why not rip off the band-aid? I’m only coming to 2 conclusions.

    1. Some people in power really think Woody is up for the challenge.

    And bear with me….

    2. The perception of fairness. I’m wondering if how quickly we got rid of Crean and Sampson came back to bite us. There is somewhat of a coaches fraternity in all sports where they bond over all the BS they have to deal with. In CBB, Izzo and K love to speak out and defend their own. Programs like ours that are, rightly or wrongly, rifling through coaches may be getting that ‘toxic’ reputation within the fraternity.

With all the high end coaching prospects out there, after Crean we made 2 underwhelming hires in a row. I can’t imagine either were top 3 (possibly top 5) on the AD’s wishlists. This likely means that high end coaches are saying ‘no’ behind the scenes.

We repeat it daily: we have the tradition, the resources, the money, the national exposure, a recruiting destination, fan support, etc. But if the candidates we go after do not perceive IU as being fair in their expectations, is it realistic to assume that we can lure them away from a competitive program they built?

This time, I’m wondering if Woody has to fall flat on his face to overcome the perception that we are jumping the gun by firing a head coach….one of our own….once again.

it would be BIG!  get it?

Would he be eligible to play right away? He already transferred once....unless he's a grad transfer.

But yes, a rebounding guard who can score, get to the line and make free throws....sign me up. AND he's from Indiana. Hope the staff gives him a look.

Though Dolson and BoT disagree about it happening now, consensus was that this isn't the bridge hire they'd hoped for and this is his last year barring some miracle B1G championship or FF run next year that would make for bad optics.

If this is true. Again big ‘if’…especially if it’s coming from BTB…..

Then whyyyyyyyy? If they think it’s very unlikely for woody to perform up to the near impossible standards that they set, then why delay the inevitable? It can’t be the money.

I don’t think it’s good enough.  He came in promising big ten championships and competing for National championships.  Those are his own words.  So next year will be his fourth year to get to that level.  That’s a fair period of time in the NIL era with his budgets.  If he doesn’t get there, then he will have failed at his own expectation.

I guess it depends on who it is ‘good enough’ for. I just think the fanbase is getting set up for mediocrity.

Let’s put aside how good or bad of a coach we think Woody is for a second. ANY coach put in the this situation - coming off a below average season with (what will most likely be) a half full roster - would have trouble being better than a bubble team next year.

    Even May. Even Pearl.Even Beard.

….and if the admin thinks Woody is the one who can do it????

….oh boy. Hold on to your butts.
