I should have said 100% speculation. I am no insider. Edited original

Thanks. Not my intention to single you out. I just have a feeling things are going to start getting loony up in here.

I hope the HSN walls are ready for the poop to be flung at them. I just want to know the origination of said poop.

Am I being too much of a Karen by simply requesting that we clarify posts like these?  Are we posting about absolutes, inside info, speculation, rumors, opinions, etc.?

How much if any does the recent success of Ohio St. (since firing Holtmann) have on IU and Woodson?

I know they are not the Spartans of old, but there is something to be said about them winning on the road at Michigan St. There seems to be a resurgence of energy and a will to play to their potential. JMO

I don’t know what effect it has on IU, but OSU’s recent wins lead me to believe that the players didn’t buy into Holtman’s system. Like us, OSU has talent to win in the B1G, perhaps they were just being held back.

lastly:  people talk about putting too much emphasis on stars when recruiting.  is there anyone on this board who thinks Woodson can go after more off the radar guys with fewer stars and make them into a team the way Purdue or Wisconsin does?

    No.

Gard and Painter can get those guys because they have a developed system and know exactly who they need.

I don’t think this staff can identify lower ranked talent because they haven’t so far. I’m not sure you can even say one player brought on to this team, other than JHS, has over achieved.

But more importantly, I don’t think we have a system that the players, or even the coaches, have completely bought into.

it seems like the staff is just guessing at this point. Get a player with athleticism, try to plug him in somewhere and hope it works.

Yeah, Reneau is just a tough case. Like you said, he has improved so much, and he's incredibly skilled offensively.

I just don't know how you win with him? He's not a good enough rebounder or defender to be a 5 all season, especially in the Big Ten.

But he's also a really bad fit at the 4 in a 2-big lineup in the modern basketball, and is also a liability as a rebounder and defensive player at the 4.

While being extremely skilled offensively, at the 4 he clogs the land, and in general he forces a lot of shots and isn't a willing passer.

Again, he seems like a phenomenal person and has a ton of skill, just not sure you can win with him long term.

    Good points.

    An interesting hypothetical question though…

IF there is a coaching change, what does he do with Malik? It’d be very interesting how the whole situation would play out.

and I hope we learned our lesson.

This is our only saving grace.

If Woody stays, we’ll know our answer probably by June, depending on who we pick up in the portal and who we go after.

My concern is that Woody will have no problem getting a highly ranked big, because what big doesn’t want to play in this offense when they are touching the ball at an obscenely high rate? And we’ll take him because it’s easy. And we’ll have to play him because he’s talented. We’ll continue putting up a low volume 3’s and we’ll continue to compete at a mathematical disadvantage. It’s going to be a never ending cycle.

Completely agree. I remember when the Ledlum recruitment was going down, I was hoping we'd land him as a 4, but didn't want him if it was going to be as a wing.

MM is a college 4. I even feel bad for Banks. I understand he hadn't exactly earned minutes, but he's also been played completely out of position. He's not a spot-up shooting or driving wing, he's a college 4.

Put these guys out there at the 4 surrounded by dynamic guards and wings, and maybe they and the overall product looks better.

I admittedly drank the kool-aid on the whole idea that Mgbako could be a 3. He’s improved a lot this year, but he’s being forced to defend on the perimeter more, and that’s not where he’s comfortable. If his defensive assignments were opposing 4’s I think he’d be in foul trouble a lot less and he’d have more rebounds. On the other end, he’d pull defenders out of the paint.

If I’m being honest - and i hate saying this - it’s Malik that doesn’t fit. I think he thinks he’s a 4 and Woody thinks he’s a 4 because why else are we searching for another 5? I think Malik is a 5 who’s not good at rebounding. The sooner this can be accepted, the better the chance we may turn the corner.

Agree or disagree, the argument can be made that there wasn't a top-flight transfer guard that was going to come because we had XJ and Galloway returning. Those guys, if healthy, were always going to play a lot of minutes.

If I remember correctly, I think i was even saying that last offseason.

But for a team that is so bad at shooting, you're telling me there wasn't a Nick Zeisloft type that we could have added?

A guy that was a straight shooter and maybe not super high on the transfer rankings lists? Remember, Zeisloft averaged like 6ppg at Ill St., and Crean took a ton of heat for that recruitment, but surrounded by talent, Ziesloft was a very key piece on a Big Ten title/Sweet Sixteen team.

We couldn't have added one guy like that?

I’m more concerned that guards looked at how the offense is ran and simply said: ‘nope’.

If it really was a ‘minutes issue’ it’s not because of Trey and X. It’s because Woody plays 2 bigs at the same time. Woody’s old school line-ups eat up the minutes for potential guards because only 2 guards/wings are on the floor at the same time. MM should be a 4 (with Walker as a back up) and we should have 3 guards/wings on the floor. If he does that, then there will magically be more minutes for a guard transfer. But he doesn’t.

And it’s his line up history that will haunt us again this off-season. Bet. It’s already been rumored he’s going to go after another 5, now that he missed on Queen.

    4 out/1 in, my arse.

We about to go a 2nd this season with 0 threes made? Lol we did it for the first time in 10 years earlier this year. 2x’s in one season is incredible. Should probably play the lotto

We probably also lead the league in goaltends and fouling 3 point shooters.

OK, then...What IS the criteria? I'm just not buying that metrics, or the "it isn't that we lose, it's HOW we lose." All coaches are going to be judged on their won/loss record...I don't care how ugly it is on either side...A win is a win, and a loss is a loss...No coach is going to get fired for "winning ugly."

Do you honestly think we're going to bring in a coach that will have us in the Final 4 immediately? Here's a list that addresses just that...The favored sons like Pearl (1 FF in 20 years), Beard (1 in 8 years), and Musselman (never been in 9 years). On average, it takes 10.5 years for a coach to reach the Final 4...

So I'm just not real sure on what y'all want?

Unfortunately, that's the reality in CBB. How you win or lose directly dictates whether you make the tournament/the seed you get in the tournament.

    I don't make the rules.

My general expectations of where I want the program to be:

good season = make it past the first weekend/Win B1G
average season = soundly make it into the tournament/top 5 in B1G
down year = Bubble team (barely making it in or narrowly missing)
very bad year = not considered for the tournament; play in the NIT
blow shit up year = not even considered for the NIT

Why did we fire Archie Miller? Because he could not beat Purdue or get to the NCAA tournament. Yet we get a guy who accomplishes both of those tasks in his first two years, and because we have one down year, we're ready for Dolson to go back to the donors, ask for another $12.5 million dollars to cover what would be essentially admitting he made a mistake. He's not going to do that.

We fired CAM for a lot more reasons than that. The season he got fired was remarkably similar to this one. His record will probably be worse, because the B1G was a lot better, but the NET and Kenpom rankings were a good 40-50 spots higher than this year's team. His offense sucked and was stagnant. His patented defense also sucked and gave up a high volume of 3's. His players gave up on him. He showed no ability to adapt systematically. His players showed no fire and were sloppy with the ball. He was unable to recruit or develop shooters.

You keep on using the 'we made the tournament' card. Yes, we did, but that means nothing if Dolson doesn't see a path forward. CAM also was pretty much a shoe in for the 2019-20 tournament that got cancelled. CAM also dealt with injuries. In the end that meant nothing because the AD didn't see a path forward with him as our coach.

I'm not quite sure what to think Woody's future with IU, but if Dolson chooses to fire him, I think it will be warranted.....especially if we are using CAM as the barometer.

That was a completely different situation. Apples and oranges

I know, but it's an example of why I take it all with a grain of salt. If Trilly was around back then he probably would've reported on the same narrative.

At this stage of the game, any leaks come packed with an agenda. Maybe it's to get Woody fired. Maybe it's for Pearl to get an extension. And because of this I question validity of said leaks.

If there was mutual and general interest from both parties, I have a hard time believing this info would see the light of day, simply because less than a hand full of people would even know about it. Of those people, I don't think they'd let it slip to Trilly, first hand, second or third hand. Too much would be at stake.

I do believe that Trilly is being shared something. I just don't think that info is correct. I'd bet it's 'wish-casting' being passed down by a game of telephone.

Again, this is not a dig on you at all. Keep brining the info....not trying to dissuade you one bit. I appreciate you sharing.

That’s not how Trilly gets his info. Pearl’s camp didn’t leak the info for a raise or anything like that.

Again, everything is speculation, but I've heard from a few places that this is exactly what Holtmann's agent did to us last coaching search.

The agent reached out to IU and asked if they wanted to talk to Holtmann. IU said 'sure'. The agent leaked the info that Holtman was being interviewed, but didn't want the job and then our fanbase wanted to hang ourselves because we weren't even good enough for Holtmann. And then Holtmann's agent parlayed this into a contract extension. Great move, considering how the last 3 years unfolded.

You can doubt it but it happened and Trilly confirmed it

All due respect, but it’s coaching search rumors like this that I take with a thousand grains of salt. Even if it’s coming from Trilly.

if this really is the case, then Pearl isn’t interested and his camp leaked the info.

At this stage in the season, this info would be too sensitive for any source to leak if the interest was mutual.

if a source is saying this then it’s probably pure speculation.

That said, I do appreciate you sharing the rumor.
