Man, I really just hope we get a version of XJ that can still do a lot of similar stuff he could do pre-injury before the tourney. It just makes us a much more dynamic team on both sides of the ball. In the limited number of games we've had him, JHS, and TJD all healthy, we've looked like an elite team.

That win at Xavier is looking like it might be the best non-con win in the Big Ten (Illinois vs UCLA might be better, but it was neutral instead of a road game), and JHS really didn't even play that well. That's Xavier's only home loss of the year, which includes games against West Virginia, UConn, Marquette, Creighton, Providence, etc.

I think with XJ your best argument is Northwestern x2 and the Iowa game as possible/probable wins.  Lost those 3 by a combined 5 points.

Ehh.. Maryland was not an 11 pt game or even close to it. I mean.. I think we beat those 3 teams you named because we'd just be a lot better. I'm already chalking those up as Ws.

I just don't think Maryland, even by the laws of averages, is an auto loss.

I will be pleasantly surprised if XJ gives us anything meaningful this season. I hope for him that he gets to dress and make an appearance(s) at the end of his IU career.

His best asset is his quickness. I’ll be shocked if he comes back with the same quickness right away. He’s also had a tendency to be a slow starter, so the later his return, the less likely he’ll be a major factor. Hope he proves me wrong.

And no matter how much conditioning he does, he still won't be in "game shape". And I agree he'll be slower, for a few weeks until he gets to the "new normal".

I’m not sorry for stating this, but sorry it is what it is…

We have just a few home games left. Let Bates get some minutes in those, if he plays within himself. If he starts throwing up bad shots, as is his wont, sit him. He gets no minutes on the road. This opinion is not out of I’ll-will towards him, but after watching him play for close to two years.

I have never seen a more underwhelming 5 star player

You are correct, he is unplayable on the road right now. Hopefully we can get something out of him in our three remaining home games.

Takes them from everyone...

Probably Bates the most. For sure 2-3 mins of JHSs time, as well.. unless JHS is really filling it up.

He'll take some of Miller's too and TG will play the 3.

That could mean Kopps at the 4.. if we are able to stomach it defensively... so, actually he would be cutting into Race/Malik/JGs mins, in that situation.

247 had him ranked #30..

4 star

Rivals had him at #34 also 4 star

That said he is shooting 41% from 3, and his D is improving...He definitely need better shot selection, but I'm not too worried about that...

Young players struggle on the road...

Maybe our expectations were too high coming in, but I'm not ready to give up on him yet...

As close as it can be to a 5. Would like to see a breakdown between shooting at home v on the road. I bet it is really drastic.

I said this in a game thread a week or so back. He is nothing but a 3 point specialist at this point. He rushes shots and appears to come off the bench with the mindset that he’s got to get his. He has little to no handle and often makes poor decisions as a result. He struggles on the court, not just on the road when he tries to do things he’s not capable of.
As I said, let him play a few minutes in the home games and if he plays within his skill set, give him a few more minutes. Otherwise, he should sit. Give the minutes to Banks.

The only other time I’d consider playing him is when the other team is in an obvious fouling situation. He is excellent from the line.

Still, as I said, life on the road in the Big 10 is tough on young players...

When Tamar gets his feet set and has an open look, I'm as confident in him as I am anybody on the team from 3

If he stays around for a couple more years, I still have hope he’ll reach his potential.

I also question you’re calling him a “young player.” IMO, 2/3rds of the way through his Sophomore year, he’s no longer a young player
