IUFLA

Recommended Posts

When: Sunday, March 19th 8:40 PM EDT

Where: MVP Arena Albany, NY

TV: TBS Spero Dedes, Deb Antonelli, and AJ Ross

Veteran coach Jim Larranaga leads Miami (26-7 15-5, 1st in ACC) into a second round matchup with our Hoosiers. Miami is 10-2 in their last 12 including a 63-56 win over Drake in the opening round. They lost to Duke in the ACC Tournament Quarter Finals...

Miami is led by ACC Player of the Year and 1st Team All ACC selection, Isaiah Wong who averaged 16 ppg on 38% shooting from 3. Two other Hurricanes nabbed post season honors with Jordan Miller (2nd team All ACC), and Norchad Omier (3rd team). Indianapolis native and Kansas State transfer Nijel (NIL :) ) Pack and Wooga Poplar round out the starting 5. 4 of them average double figures.

Bensley Joseph, Harlond Beverly, and Anthony Walker see time off the bench for Miami.

Miami is 10th in ORtg and 225th in DRtg

The Hurricanes are a good 3 point shooting team, overall at 37%, with 4 of the 5 starters north of 35%. Good FT shooting team. Middle of the pack in rebounds, but they do share the ball well (15 Apg)

Larranaga teams are always well coached, and he seems to get the most out of them...Last year they lost to eventual NC Kansas in the Regional Final, so they have some tournament experience.

Their biggest starter is 6'7, so I would imagine we'll be pounding it inside to Race and Trayce, and be active on the offensive glass. We have to guard the perimeter and not let their guards get good open looks, because they will knock them down...Hoping our big guards bother Wong and Pack.

Not a great defensive team, so we can take advantage. Our size should bother them. Ultimately winnable game to go to the Sweet 16...

LET'S GO HOOSIERS!

I've watched Canes a few times. Maybe my coffee hasn't kicked in yet but I honestly have no clue how they won the ACC. Blue print is as you said. Pound it inside until they sag so much Trayce or Race can dish.

I love our size advantage not just down low but Nijel and Wong are 6'0 and 6'3. JHS should be able to get downhill all game long if he wants.

What took you so long?  🤣

Limit how many 3s they get, let TJD be TJD and we win.   Hopefully Race duplicates his performance from last night. If he keeps that up, we have several more games to look forward to.

Well...

They seem to shoot the 3 well. Hopefully our defensive mishaps against Penn State's shooting has prepared us for the Canes. Close out properly, don't over-extend or help on drives; keep the defensive rotations clean.

Also, if they shoot a lot of 3s, that means there will be long rebounds. Absolutely MUST limit their OfR and second chance opportunities.

We likely won't get 20 from Race again, but he still played within himself and that's 12 easy. Would like to see Bates hit the side of a barn, but if we play like last night, we'll be in control, which is what we want.

Unofficial 1901 Depth/Injury Report

Miami comes into this game as Co-champions of the ACC lead by a guard heavy group. They are also coming off a 63-56 win over Drake after going on a very good 16-1 run in under 4 minutes yesterday when they were down 8. Miami is lead by veteran Coach Jim Larrañaga, who has been a pretty good coach for Miami having 2 ACC championships, 1 ACCT Championship, 3 Sweet 16s and 1 Elite 8 (2022). Miami will be gunning to make back to back Sweet 16s in its School history.

Probable Starters:

6’7 248 F Norchad Omier (Team’s best Forward, 13.8 PPG, and nearly averages a double double per game, has been in foul trouble as of late)

6’5 190 G Wooga Poplar (Provides pretty good support, Team’s best 3PT shooter if has the ball, usually plays 25+ MPG)

6’0 185 G Nigel Pack (Indianapolis native, but he can light it up real quick, extremely efficient shooter)

6’4 185 G Isaiah Wong (You can make the argument he is the best player on Miami, leads team in 15.8 PPG, assists leader, and very streaky from the 3, was shut down by Drake)

6’7 195 G Jordan Miller (Team’s 2nd leading scorer at 15.0 PPG, very good rebounder and shoots respectably at 35.6% from the 3, he is pretty much in the game at all times)

As you can tell, Miami is very guard heavy and has balanced scoring all around with 4 starters averaging 13.4 PPG and a team average of 79.4 PPG, making Miami one of the best offenses in the country (#12 in Kenpom). They shoot a very respectable 37% from the 3 and makes around 78% of their FT shooting. However, they have a suspect defense since they give up around 72 PPG is ranked at #112 in total defense on Kenpom. 3 starters play around 30 minutes or more in their games, and some have been recently playing nearly 35-36 MPG in the last few weeks. They foul around 15 PPG, with their starting forward being in foul trouble as of late before the Drake game. However, this will not be an easy task for the Hoosiers, since Miami is going to play quick and try to bury you deep. Coach Larrañaga always have a well coached team and I expect that for tomorrow night. On paper they look small, but watching them against Drake, they play so much bigger than what they are. Drake shut down Isaiah Wong yesterday, probably with Miami, if one player shuts down, another will step up.

Looks like, in quality minutes, these last few weeks, Miami has been playing 7-8 deep. The main players usually coming off the bench is 6’2 205 G Bensley Joseph (5.3 PPG, 38%PT), 6’6 200 G Harlond Beverly (relieve player), and 6’9 215 F Anthony Walker (relieve player).

Injury Report:

As of now, no one, however, starting F Norchad Omier is currently playing through an ankle injury, but was cleared yesterday. He had a double-double against Drake if anyone was wondering

Reasoning?

You mean why were up so late? The game ended really late. You still have to do media before you get out of there, shower up, get the equipment packed up, etc.

Probably eat something, get settled down and it can get to 4am really quick.
