Popular Post IUFLA
When: Tuesday November 7th 6:30 EST Where: Simon-Skjotd Assembly Hall, Bloomington, Indiana TV: BTN Time to get down to the real deal! Former Penn State Coach Pat Chambers leads his Florida Gulf Coast Eagles into SSAH for their first game of the year (at least I couldn't find any evidence of an exhibition or scrimmage). Chambers is in his 2nd year at FGCU (last year 17-15 7-11, 9th in A-Sun) after a 9 year stint with the Nittany Lions (he never made the tournament with Penn St). There's an additional Big 10 flavor to this team as former Purdue Boilermaker Isaiah Thompson returns as their leading scorer, and a pre-season A-Sun first team pick. Over the off season, they also picked up former Nittany Lion Dallion Johnson, who was recruited by Chambers at Penn State but never played for him. Johnson started 14 games as a sophomore for the Nittany Lions while shooting 36.5 percent from 3, but he fell out of favor with Micah Shrewsberry and only saw 9 MPG last year. In addition to those 2, FGCU returns 3 more of their top scorers in 6'3 JR guard Chase Johnston (13 ppg) , 6'7 JR forward Zach Anderson (12 ppg), and 6'10 forward Andre Weir (9 ppg). Thompson, Johnston, and Anderson all shot north of 37% from 3, while Weir checked in at 34%. And they shoot a LOT of 3s (832 last year compared to our 544...50th in the country). Average on the boards with about a 1:1 Assist to TO ration as a team, but they don't turn it over a lot...In their only 2 P6 matchups last year, they surprised Southern Cal in their first game of the season in LA 74-61, and lost to Tennessee in Knoxville 81-50... Good test for us. I think we'll do well inside, but we have to close out on the perimeter on them. Go Hoosiers! Kdug
Love playing a quality opponent to start the season. Torvik has FGCU ranked 121, which is ahead of some of the bottom tier Big Ten teams like Penn State and Minnesota. He has us favored by 12.
Hoosier987
Good first test. FGCU is not a typical first game of the season opponent. They're tough and Chambers is a good coach. With that said, expecting a 15-20 point win. Woodson and the guys will be focused.
Parakeet Jones
We need to come out ready to play on Tuesday. I’ll feel better when this one is out of the way.
IUFLA
Addendum: Last year FGCU finished 9th in Drtg, and 8th in Ortg (out of 14 teams) in the A-Sun... We played 1 game against A-Sun competition last year...Kennesaw State which we won 69-55...Kennesaw State fisished 2nd in the league but won the conference tournament, losing to Xavier in the first round of the NCAAs Edited November 4, 2023 by IUFLA

Playing the exhibition games is good to play someone other than your team mates, but it can often instill a false sense of how good you are, esp among the young guys. I really don't think Tues will be a "cakewalk". I think we'll get some weaknesses exposed big time. Want to see how we react when we get a "comfortable" lead. Do we take our foot off the gas and hit cruise control, or do we continue to put the pedal to the medal?

And have plenty of video to breakdown areas to grow.

That probably helps the players get better focused.

Looking at our schedule, I don't think Woody would be afraid to schedule the Milwaukee Bucks. 🤣
NotIThatLives
This is a dangerous test. The defense better be ready for shooters.

Actually, I looked up the highlights from their game with USC, and the first guy who scores for FGCU had the name "Azul" on the back of his jersey...I looked at last years roster, and there was no one named Azul...Did a web search...Nothing...Then the next guy who scored also had the name "Azul" on his jersey, and they obviously weren't related... Come to find out, Azul is the name of their mascot, and last year, at least, they ALL wore his name on the backs of their jerseys... IUFLA
Best guess as to who FGCU will start... Sure things Isaiah Thompson Zach Anderson Andre Ware Pretty Sure Chase Johnston Others in the mix Dakota Rivers Dallion Johnson Keeshawn Kellman Read an article where Chambers said they'd go 10 deep easily... IUFLA
Grad transfer Keeshawn Kellman is interesting...A starter on Princeton's Sweet Sixteen team last year (they beat Arizona in the opening round and Mizzou in the round of 32) at power forward...Averaged 8 ppg and 5 rpg...
