The Bettenhausen family has the distinction of having the most starts in the Indianapolis 500 without a victory. Tony Sr, Gary and Tony Jr had a combined 46 Indy 500 races. A bit of trivia, in the ‘91 race, he was the fastest qualifier, but because he qualified on the second day he didn’t get the pole, Rick Mears got it. My dad had cousins that were from Tinley Park, IL, where Tony Sr was from and very highly regarded.
