What's the latest? Is he ours or is he slipping off to Lincoln?

I could see Nebraska being a threat. If Essegian returns to freshman form, he's still fighting for major minutes (assuming Carlyle is coming).

If he returns to form, Nebraska can sell him on major minutes and feeding him like the dude that just left Nebraska. And we haven't proven that this system thrives for 3 point shooters.

The obvious counter to that is, we haven't had one, but Nebraska just did and his minutes are available

Will be interesting to follow, I’ll be pretty disappointed at this point if Ballo doesn’t pick us tbh.

if Payne would be ok with a backup role it would have our center covered for next year at least

Reneau's foul troubles are a very real thing. And opens the door up for someone else.

Personally a guy like Amari Williams would be awesome to switch up the pace and have the potential to play a faster pace.

Purdue is loaded with Indiana players, but Edey has covered a lot of flaws. Caleb Furst was a can’t miss prospect who’s a bust. Malik has been much better than Trey Kaufman Renn. Other than 3 point shooting, Gallo’s stats are better than Loyer’s. Would Braden Smith be the same player with Zed Key or Dain Dainja at center?

Edey has covered tons of flaws. Braden Smith is a great player, but no low post threat allows guards to focus on their man. Can you imagine and Edey-less Purdue team playing against Houston or Auburn?

That being said, Painter put guys around Edey that could make double teams pay. Credit to him.

With Sparks leaving I'm assuming that Woodson is now going to focus on playing a more modern style of basketball and Sparks wasn't in the plans for that. The issue is now we have no backup for Malik which I feel Sparks would have done well at.

Sparks was not a viable backup at this level.

Not sure where to post this, but over on TDH there is a link to an interview with Brian Evans on the current state of IU BBall.

You may, or may not agree with him, but you gotta give the guy credit for speaking his mind as an IU Big 10 player of the year in his time.

Hard to disagree with what he said.

I call BS on any sort of ceiling Gunn has, ultimately. He jumps high. That's it. "create shots for himself" is actually creating bricks for himself judging by his shooting percentages.

You don't "give chances" that's the issue. The time for experimenting was when Miami beat us to the end of the portal season....at that point..we should have realized Gunn, Banks, and others weren't going to cut it---

Then we watched Gunn play all off-season plus early in the season and couple that with our HORRID start as a team, it is 100% befuddling why it took until Dec 29 for Leal to get real run. There's no way Gunn outperformed Leal to earn those minutes to begin with... there is just no way that is fathomable after watching them both play this season. One is effective and helpful, one isn't.

Add in the fact that this team, built around 2 post players, needs someone that those big guys can kick out to for an open 3. That's it. Just be a decent shooter.... and Gunn clearly is not that guy. Leal is, and a strong argument could be made that he needs to quit being so quick to pass.

This isn't true and you know it.  I bet Leal would run circle around them all day long.  Doesn't change Leal's ceiling.  Every player has one and everyone knows it.  Should Leal have gotten more playing time, for sure.  Coach decided not to.  Doesn't change that Leal is a borderline P6 D1 player.  I get he is a fairly local kid and plays with his heart and passion for IU, doesn't change his ceiling though.

My comment was regarding Gunn, not Leal, Chief.

This is Leal's ceiling. There was no way he was ever going to grow into a guy that can finish at the rim or create his own shot. Gunn's ceiling is quite high. I doubt he ever gets there, and he certainly isn't anywhere near it now, but he's a smooth athlete that could be a really good, multi-level scorer with the size and speed to be a force on defense. That's what we need, so we had to see if he could become that. Some guys click when given the chance.

With that logic, we could pull any athlete off the football team, stick them on the basketball team and say the same thing about them and their ceiling.

  9. I'm typically not a doom and gloom guy, but Woody better get with the times and do some self reflection. Ware is going to go pro.. and if we are playing "inside out", you are playing with fire. Reneau is a poor defender and foul prone... then what happens?

He needs to get some shooters and teach these guys to crash the boards. He's going to have to decide if everything is going to be on Reneau, or if he's going to change his approach. Another Ware probably ain't coming through that door. Time to get with the times and get some guards. Because if he's sticking with his inside out approach, it could backfire.

I'm sure he gave some kind of reason but the reality is in todays day and age of college athletics it doesn't really matter

Again, I agree and that was my post. I'm saying Liam probably used the rumors as the excuse and the administration leaked the Woodson staying story in a last ditch effort.

No, he just wants out because he has concerns with Woodson. Woodson hasn't been communicating with him since he signed. Plus he doesn't trust Woodson's offense. NLI's don't really mean anything anymore.

Yes, I'm sure that is his ACTUAL reason, but my guess is the McNeely's used the rumors as the reason to get out.

Why would IU have to even announce he’s coming back? To quiet down message board rumors? There’s clearly more going on.

My total guess is, Liam used the coaching change rumors as a reason to get out of his LOI. Coaching staff tells the administration about it. Administration had no intention of changing coaches, so they release that in an attempt to keep McNeely.
