No, he just wants out because he has concerns with Woodson. Woodson hasn't been communicating with him since he signed. Plus he doesn't trust Woodson's offense. NLI's don't really mean anything anymore.
Yes, I'm sure that is his ACTUAL reason, but my guess is the McNeely's used the rumors as the reason to get out.

Why would IU have to even announce he’s coming back? To quiet down message board rumors? There’s clearly more going on.
My total guess is, Liam used the coaching change rumors as a reason to get out of his LOI. Coaching staff tells the administration about it. Administration had no intention of changing coaches, so they release that in an attempt to keep McNeely.

i know we'll bring in talent from the portal. clearly we have the money. but just for fun... maybe keep a running log of what our current lineup will be next year:
Cupps
Newton
Mtaco
Reneau
Sparks
If this is our starting lineup, God help us.

This is a very important distinction in the convo.
Just mearly having your best player be a big doesn't make your team/offense post-dominant or inside-out.
Cody Zeller was the best player on the 2011-13 teams, I don't think anyone would say those teams were post-dominant or inside-out.
I'm fine if we played through the post... if we could shoot, if our big men kicked it out, or if guards did something other than watch when the ball was in the post. Obviously, not being able to shoot doesn't entice big guys to kick it out.
But if Woodson truly is trying to do that, how about emphasizing cuts to the basket and actually moving?

Problem with us playing inside out is, we lack the "out". Pretty easy to for 5 defenders to guard two post players

Maybe. Cig hasn't coached a game yet (although so far so good).
The point being that the Big Ten is wide open for the taking right now. Purdue and Wisconsin aren't really big mountains to climb for a good coach at Indiana. Izzo is trending down. Michigan is in a bigger rut than we are. Ohio State is starting over. Maryland is in the toilet. UCLA's coach wants out because of lack of NIL resources. None of the other PAC schools really move the basketball needle.
That is what is so frustrating about this. Get a coach who knows how to do this, give him what he needs, and get out of the bleeping way. We have sucked horribly and we are still pulling the best talent in the league. We just need to commit to getting THE guy (and I don't think there is just one guy out there, probably several would do well here.)
The "get out of the bleeping way" has been the issue for this administration for decades.

he isnt coming for less than $6 million.
Yeah, he's not taking a pay cut. And if he did, there'd be big, easy to reach incentives putting him over what he's making.

This administration aids and provokes this idiocy. IU sits here and says their expectation is more banners... B10 championships... we hire a former IU player (where's he gonna go if he has massive success?!)
He takes us to the tournament, which is not necessarily a WOW goal for the coach or administration... what do we do? Give him $1 million extra and an extension.
Wasn't that expected with his original salary?! Make the tournament?
How about the coach actually show some sustained success and deep tourney runs before we go bonkers with money and extensions. The administration is saying we want big things, and when little things happen, we treat it like it's a monumental success.

Pearl has been interested in the IU job for 15 years. It’s nothing new.
This. And he's still adored by many in the state going back to his USI days.

Came in saying 4 out, 1 in offense and he constructs 1 out, 4 in.
The nba coach angle only helps recruiting for a short while if you are crap at actual coaching
Maybe Woodson was referring to our actual shots when he was talking about "4 out, 1 in".

If Dolson were to entertain letting Mike Woodson go, would it be because of
A) his overall body of work
Or
B) the record this year
?
For me, it'd be for a failure to establish a culture and identity that we were expecting from a guy that played for Bob Knight. No toughness, no fight, no fundamentals, etc.

There’s nothing in IU’s history that tells you that they’d make a play for Beard, Oats or Pearl.
Quinn may have brought us Woody and Dolson tried to put in guardrails with Matta and Fife. But Woody was the guy who made Dolson fly to him for the interview and Fife and Matta didn’t take. That’s the picture that formed. When I was a kid my grandmother had two dogs, a big muscular one and a tiny one. The little one had a temper and acted like it was going to go berserk every time another dog would come by. The big dog stayed calm. The little dog knew the big dog was there for him. Woody has had Quinn.
But Quinn’s character can never be questioned. He’d never treat IU like his personal playground for a buddy. It’s way bigger than one person and he knows it. I think he will know when it’s right. But will they switch to going after a flamboyant guy like Pearl or a guy like Beard? I will believe it when I see it.
Unfortunately, this is 100% correct. Can't have a coach that the administration can't control and can't have someone "bigger" than them.

I’m not so sure about that
I think he would be very selective, no doubt. But I think Indiana is one of the few programs he'd jump ship for.

It doesn’t matter about the donors. It’s not happening. Pearl isn’t leaving and Beard wouldn’t be approved by the University.
Pearl would leave.

Yeah good luck with that
Yeah, I know. Which is why Dusty May would be the most realistic coach. But if enough donors are tired of losing, Pearl and Beard are my first calls.

My #1A and B would be Pearl and Beard

so...i'd reluctantly take May over Woodson next year, but seems like we'd be running the risk of another Archie Miller. i get that Beard and Pearl don't seem to fit the squeaky clean preference of our admin, but i'm holding out hope i guess. if not one of them, is there no realistic candidate that has been a proven winner for a power 5 program? pretty important that the next hire is the right guy. back to the other topic - does it seem very likely that if we end 16-16 that Woodson will be frustrated enough and hearing enough from the fans that he'd really consider retiring? you're getting my hopes up. i'm assuming he'll give it one more year and it will be miserable and then he'll be done?
I do know that one major donor that previously fit the "squeaky clean" preference has become extremely frustrated over the past decade and is willing to look past a few things now

Trilly also said he believes Woodson could choose retirement rather than dealing with the backlash. Big money boosters could also start applying pressure because of May possibly deciding to take another big job this offseason.
Yeah, I could definitely see this being a scenario. Retire and save face.

cut him
Why? He'd be the best shooter on the team with that clip

My issue with these Woodson led teams is a lack of identity. What are we going to hang our hat on? Defense? Nope. Low turnovers? Nope. Shooting? Nope. Tenacity and hustle? Nope.
I thought having a Bob Knight player, especially an older one, would mean not putting up with a lack of hustle. Not putting up with awful defense. Basics. Things you'd expect from an Indiana team.
Couple that with a continued lack of recruiting to needs. We've needed shooters for a long time. We never get them. It's frustrating.

Jerry's main problem is Jerry. He needs to show some humility and actually turn over to football operation to an actual GM
But honestly, he isn't doing a terrible job as GM. I'm sure he's hovering over the shoulder of every coach and player, which is probably the issue.
But as far as roster building and drafting, it's hard to argue that they have a ton of talent on the team.
