Looks like a full roster tonight, no more excuses.

“Well ya know Don, here’s the thing, and Mike Woodson always takes the blame and doesn’t point fingers at the players, but X has been hurt. You had to expect him to get a flagrant tonight, his mind is rusty.

And I’m not the one missing them shots. Hell Don, it isn’t even my job to get them open shots. My job is to get them over the hump. Lotta season left, we’ll be okay. Just gotta keep working and get them over the hump.”

    - Mike Woodson to Don Fischer, on 2/27 and 9:07 PM.

it's wild when people point to the last two years as successes and this year is just an anomaly.

    Totally agree.

We finished four spots better on KenPom last year than Archie’s best team. We got blown out in the first weekend. Last year was fine, and fine was the best we’ve had in a while, but it wasn’t good.

This team is very possibly going to go down as the worst team sans Crean’s first few that anyone on this board has seen. It’s not “just a bad season”.

Like I say, we’ll see next year, if he really means it, because that will be his last, if he doesn’t follow through. But this is all speculation, because we’re not the ones making the decision. Personally, I can live with it either way, but I think it’s a bad look for the school and recruiting to fire a coach after one off year. But, that’s  just my opinion.

So you think this all boils down to just being one off year?

Because I believe him when he says he would like to play 4 out and 1 in, but personal dictates what style you play, and unfortunately, we had no choice this year. We missed on the guys that would have made a difference, and our returning players either didn’t improve or in some cases regressed. No excuses though, because it all falls on the head coach. Next season will be his make or brake year.

But he said just this week he plays two bigs and he doesn’t care what the analytics say about it.

Thats what has me confused about folks saying he wants to play four out, he flat out said he doesn’t want to do it this week even though it’s worked better with this team.

Like I said, I think he gets another year, so we’ll see. He whiffed in the portal this year, with the exception of Ware, and was forced to go big again out of necessity. Without going down low, we wouldn’t have scored 50 pts in most games. Our guards are that bad.

I understand you think that, and then I asked questions based on that which you chose to ignore.

I would really like to understand why we think this year is not his preferred play style based on Woodson's history and his own comments.

@IU Scottwhy did you click on sad? i really want your take. you rooted for a coach for 20 some years that had more baggage than an airport. They used to say Knights secretary was the highest paid in the world because he threw a potted plant at her once a week. Hell everyone has some sort of baggage. We look deep enough we'll find yours maybe. :coffee:

I know this would never work out this way in a million years, but if there is going to be a change, I wish everything could be worked out so that the announcement could be made about his retirement prior to the MSU game.  That way he could be given a nice thank you from the fans for his years as a player and the good times from his years as coach.  It would be like another senior day for him in a sense.   I'm afraid otherwise his potential last game in SSAH could have some ugly moments, and  I would really hate that for him and for our fan base.

It's kind of up to him though, isn't it? No one can force him to retire, but if he can't see the train coming down the tracks there isn't much you can do to get him over the hump.

As a fan I go back to the 71-72 season, and have to admit Woodson was one of my favorite players, but  I don’t think that clouds my opinion of him as a coach. I just believe he’s capable of changing the style of play (scheme) with the right roster. As I said, we struck and missed on some game changers this off season, and he rolled the dice and decided to go with the backcourt we had and that was a mistake, so that’s on him. I think he gets one more year to prove everyone wrong. The danger is with all the talk about a coaching change, we may have a such mass exodus at the end of the season that the portal won’t provide enough relief next year….so we’ll see.

I'm curious what makes you think he is capable of wanting to change?

Does the quote about ignoring analytics saying we are better playing 4 around 1 and him clapping back about playing two bigs concern you?

What about the fact that he forced the Knicks to play bigger after having a good season and it got him fired, does that concern you about his intentions?

    lol.

Of all the stupid things that have been said, this may be the worst.

Is the team frustrated and Mike Woodson just oblivious?

Does honorable, leader of men Mike Woodson actually realize they are frustrated, and he's just lying to us?

Does the entire team and staff just care so little that having one of the worst seasons in the history of the program not frustrate them?

I am sure someone can spin this to not be a big deal, but I'm really struggling to see how that isn't just a completely damning thing to admit from him.

Woodson was asked just yesterday why he doesnt play more 4 around 1. When analytics shows IU is better. He said the analytics dont matter because the data is from short stretches and HE has seen IU win playing with 2 bigs. Woodson said he wins with 2 BIGS.

Woodson will never change, even though he said he was glad TJD and Race were gone so he could play smaller. Zebras dont change their stripes.

That's not completely fair to Woodson, he has changed in the past.

Like when he was with the Knicks and won a lot of games playing a perimeter oriented scheme, and then the next year he changed to something more similar to what we see now and he got fired.

See he's changed.... to play exactly how he plays now, even though it doesn't work.

I don’t think it’s so much a refusal to play modern day basketball as it is was we missed on guys like Knecht and Timberlake, and the decision was made to go with X, Cupps and Galloway, with the hope that Gunn and Banks would make a sophomore leap, and be threats from the outside. We all know how that turned out, so we were left with the same old let’s go down low to Reneau and Ware. Now is that on Woodson - yes, but is it correctable - yes. So I say, let’s see how next season plays out.

I think it's at best an over-simplification, if not flat out wrong, to say we play the way we play because of roster limitations and misses in recruiting.

Even despite those limitations and misses, this team is not playing in the most optimized way from a schematic standpoint. Why do we think Woodson is going to suddenly play a better scheme when the reason he isn't doing it this year isn't because of roster limitations.

The stuff Pearl did is now legal. Why would you hold that against somebody. It's not like we are talking about a Beard situation and please don't compare to Sampson either because he wasn't really fired over texts.

Right, nothing Bruce Pearl actually did registers as even a moral grey area.

If we are going to hold Pearl's association with Person against him, we should probably do the same to Woodson for his friendship with Zeke. Zeke is a worse person than Person, IMO.
