  1. All of our pg’s have glaring issues honestly. That wording may be a bit strong but it’s true. None of them are great shooters. Hopefully last night was an anomaly, but nobody held onto the ball last night. Rob seems to be the best with turnovers but outside of that he doesn’t provide much on the offensive end. X can’t seem to stay in the game longer than 5 minutes without getting into foul trouble. I don’t mean to sound like an old grouchy man lol but this group has the most to improve upon going forward. Each of them has their positives and it will be interesting to see how they continue to perform moving forward.

  2. Lebron's elbow didn't look inadvertent but it also wasn't malicious. Without watching the game, I would just assume that things were getting chippy between the two teams. Stewart on the other hand made a fool out of himself. I'd say he owes the team an apology after embarrassing himself and the team like that.

Some of you need to relax.  Yes, Louisiana got 21 offensive rebounds, but they MISSED 59 shots.  For perspective, we missed 24 shots but got 10 offensive rebounds.  Our starters turned the ball over 8 times in roughly a half of basketball.  Not great, but not necessarily alarming numbers.  I have no doubt Coach Woodson will have the guys working on these things, but last night I saw something much more akin to the IU basketball of old.  My only question is why didn't we hire Woodson after Davis left?

Their O rebounding numbers are definitely skewed, but we have to do a better job of boxing out. We did a lot of turning and staring once the ball went into the air last night. I noticed Geronimo in particular last night didn't do too well boxing out. He still managed to pull in 6 rebounds last night (4 offensively) but he has a few lapses on the boards.

Kopp is coming along with his offense. He has hit a few nice baseline floaters this year. Really pretty shots.

Love the 1 dribble pull ups from both Kopp and Bates. I don’t remember seeing anything like that from anyone the past 4 years.

  5. I’m willing to stick my neck out in support of Rob. It feels like some of us here have unrealistic expectations for him. He’s not going to be your 2nd or 3rd leading scorer on any given night and he’s not a dynamic playmaker. He hasn’t been that the past 3 years and that’s not going to magically change under a new coach. I remember some dubbing him as the next Yogi for our team and people probably expect him to live up to that standard, which is pretty unfair to him.

What he does bring is relentless aggressive defense and is always bringing effort. If anyone was paying attention there were multiple plays in the first half where St Johns turned it over and Rob was always in on the action. He was only credited for 1 steal on the night but his impact was far more than that. Rob’s not going to fill the stat sheet every night, and that’s fine. He doesn’t have to. He can impact the game in different ways.

Now I’m not saying he isn’t free of criticism. When he’s the primary ball handler on the court he dribbled too much at the top of the key and the offense can’t get anything going. I think he’s still plagued by having the previous coach’s play style beat into his brain for the past 3 years. But, he’s gotta be able to learn to play differently. I’d love to see him play alongside XJ and even Galloway (which doesn’t look likely anymore). Those two guys are good ballhandlers that Rob can pass off to and they can help initiate the offense. I think Rob would do much better offensively if he can play off the ball more.

He is a Senior who has how many games played under his belt and he still cannot finish at the rim, hit his free throws, shoot the 3 consistently or understand he is a better mid range shooter.  Its isn't going to click for Rob.  He is what he is.  Sometimes, potential just doesn't show itself at this level.  He might have been better off going to a less competitive program.  His defense is really important, but he didn't shut down Champagnie last night, no one could to be honest.

I say you give Lander a long long leash for the next 3 cupcakes, you know what you have in Rob, and see if Lander can move the needle to where we hope it can be.

Was Champagnie Rob’s assignment? I’m willing to assume he was guarding the pg 90% of the possessions he was on the court. Not sure you can hold him accountable for that.

  7. One thing that concerns me about our starting lineup is the lack of quickness. TJD and XJ are pretty much locked in to guarding the opposing center and pg. That leaves us with Kopp, Stewart, and Race to guard 2-4. Race is a great defender but idk if he’ll have the quickness to keep up with Champagnie, who plays like a guard. On the other hand our starters will likely have a height advantage over most teams we play…

To clarify, I'm by no means suggesting Chuck Crabbe has anything to do with our 3pt shooting. But if you've watched the last 5 years of IU basketball, including Crean's last year, the team has had IMO a pretty big energy and enthusiasm issue. Under Archie Miller slow starts, giving up big leads to lesser opponents, and consistent energy were pretty constant themes.

I was hoping to see a lot of that changed with the new staff and renewed excitement around the program and players. Obviously this was just one game, but I was again disappointed to see the players sleep walk through the pregame introductions.

I remember last season as an example, IU was playing at OSU and there was literally zero enthusiasm during intro's. Then OSU got announced and their players were jumping up and down, running out when they were announced and high-fiving and pumping each other up as they came out on the court for the tip. Coaches were chest bumping guys as they went out for the tip, etc.

IU players looked like they were walking into a group root canal.

Of course, OSU jumped all over IU from the tip and we were never really in the game. That's just one example, but a lack of enthusiasm, emotion, etc., has been a constant theme the last 4-5 years IMO.

So no, Chuck Crabbe and player introductions have nothing to do with 3pt or free throw shooting, but I was hoping to see renewed enthusiasm, energy and a level of tenacity, and was just making an observation that I didn't see it, at least for one night.

I certainly do agree that the team could use some more enthusiasm and emotion, especially after these last 4 years of Archie Miller at the helm. Thomas Bryant comes to mind. Hopefully that picks up soon.

I don’t think I was bothered as much by the introductions as you were. I was simply happy to see IU basketball for the first time in 8 months and fans in the building (it feels like it’s been forever). But looking back there definitely could have been more emotion shown. I wasn’t at the game so I can’t speak on what the atmosphere was like.

I realize I came across harsher than intended in that original post. I was probably just a little irritated on the shooting performance and thought posters should have been paying more attention to that. So, I apologize for coming off that way and your perspective is definitely valid. But dang can we please make shots! I miss the Yogi and Zeisloft team, they could shoot the ball.

Outside of the Big Ten, is there a conference you enjoy watching more than others?

I've always enjoyed the Big East.  The style of play is appealing to me, and, with no football, their fans are truly passionate about hoops.  Watching Providence vs. Sacred Heart right now on FS1.  Al Durham looking pretty good for the Friars. In just the 10 minutes or so I've watched, it appears the Providence system fits his game well.

Just turned this game on as well. I’ve always enjoyed watching AD and rooted for him a little more than others. Definitely going to watch him when I can at Providence.
