I have a hard time imagining Fife was not picked by Admin as the heir apparent for Woody. Else why else does Fife even come and why else the falling out.
Why else bring him? An assistant coach who is familiar with the state (recruiting) and the conference plus a former IU player. Feels like a good assistant hire.
Why else did he come? Coach at the school he loves with the potential (didn't even have to be mentioned) of it growing into something more over time.
Why the falling out? Only he and Woody know but obviously they didn't mesh.

Didn’t Woody run off the heir apparent already?? I think you just throw it all out the window…if you want a new coach you go get the best one you can…money and optics be damned. If you want Woody to move upstairs as President of Basketball operations so be it…but no half hearted measures.
I'm pretty sure the "Fife was the heir apparent" narrative was only a concocted wish by some fans. Maybe Fife also thought it but obviously Woodson didn't. That scenario only works if Dolson, Woodson, and the next guy are 100% aligned on the plan.

Has anything been said about Ware's health? He came up gimpy on that breakaway late but I haven't heard anything about it.

I'm an eternal optimist, but Woody has shown that his teams get better as the year goes on... Could it be...
So we can expect to go 7-1 over our final 8 games (meaning we win the BTT, get slotted into the First 4, and lose in the sweet 16)? 🤔

Purdue did that with Painter during Keady's last season. Painter finished his first year at S. Illinois and then went to Purdue as the coach in waiting
But Painter was a Purdue guy (former player). Who is the former IU player who is now coaching somewhere that would do that? Lewis?

Here are some thoughts/questions. Feel free to discuss (or not)
If Woodson is replaced (fired or retires) then the program (once again) goes into "reset mode".
- hire Pearl/Wright - this feels like a short-term plan to me given their age and we go into reset mode again 5 years from now? Maybe with the program in a better place?
- hire May/Shaka Smart - these feels like Miller and Crean again. Maybe one has better sustained success? Will the fans/BOT be patient enough?
- hire Beard - right now he feels very polarizing like Sampson (yes, for very different reasons)
What if, Woodson got someone like Shertz to be his vice-HC (can't think of a better title)?
- There are plenty of examples of more experience coaches working under younger head coaches as advisors, but does anyone recall an addition like this or a younger coach in this role that wasn't just an assistant that rose through the ranks or a former player or both (like Scheyer and Hubert Davis)? A guy outside the system, brought in to be "the next guy"
- would bring deep understanding of the college game but can have time to learn/absorb the fishbowl/microscope environment of a major program
- takes over and we avoid the "reset" when Woodson steps down
- Is something like this as much of a pipe-dream as landing the "big fish"?

Below is a graph of last night's Ohio State Game. I exchanged 3s for 2s at the shooting percentages we had last night. I also increased 3s shot from 13 (how many we took) all the way to 25 (The number Nebraska takes per game the highest in the league). In a vacuum If we took 25 3 point shots at 38.5% clip our overall point total from 3s and 2s increases by 3 points. Turnovers would decrease significantly because the ball wouldn't be in the paint as often. Additionally, the defense would need to adjust leaving Malik and Ware in more 1 on 1 situations increasing the 2 point percentage. The question would be how many free throws would we be taking? We took 31 free throws and hit 21. Would that assumed decrease in free throws be too much to overcome? Lastly, our Point Per Possession in the 1st half was .75 per possession and we were at 1.50 points per possession in the 2nd half. This occurred even with a low percentage of 3 pointers taken.
Overall, I think the most important factor about the 3 point shot is that it reduces turnovers but most importantly breaks the will of an opponent when they're going in. I don't believe Ohio State goes up by Double Digits if we took more quality threes and ran plays like the one created for Leal and fast break three Leal created for Galloway.I believe more threes would utilize Ware and Malik better allowing their high percentage shots to have a greater affect on the moral of an opponent.
VS. Ohio State 46.5% Points From 2 38.50% Points From 3 Point Total Actual Shots Taken During Game 43 40 13 15 55 Exchanging 2s for 3s 42 39 14 16 55 41 38 15 17 55 40 37 16 18 56 39 36 17 20 56 38 35 18 21 56 37 34 19 22 56 36 33 20 23 57 35 33 21 24 57 34 32 22 25 57 33 31 23 27 57 32 30 24 28 57 31 29 25 29 58 Love it! Agree that there are several other variables at play here. I always chuckle when someone throws out the "basketball is a simple game" quote. Conceptually yes, but the underlying facets are super complex and intertwined.
Thanks for taking the time to post.

I’ll give you positive:
Payton Sparks passed up being an all-conference player at the mere chance to contribute here at IU. He’s backing up one of the best front-courts in the country. He’s 100% effort. Came here for the love of the game.
Maybe there is hope for the rising generation to still be in love with IU like the rest of us old farts.
By making the starters work in practice (which I'm assuming he is 100% effort there as well and not to mention a load to deal with), credit is also due to Sparks for us having such a great front-court.

20 at the least thats making 5-6 ...15-18 points how many games is that a poss W or close
you would need to subtract the number of 2 pointers we typically would make but not take by taking 5-6 more 3's. Don't know what that would be but I'm pretty sure the "15-18 points" goes way down given how efficient IU is in the paint.

I'd also throw 100 million at Jay Wright before anyone else.
Woodson was "too old" (63) when he took the job and it has been framed as "a retirement gig" for him. So we go after a guy over 60 that is actually retired?

If I were Scott Dolson I would have called Chris Beard yesterday and had this entire thing over with.
Beard hired by the University that fired Kelvin Sampson? I wouldn't classify that as a no-brainer

I think we’re pretty bad with and without X. The only stretch of games where I’d say we had good back-to-back performances were vs Maryland and at Michigan. X missed both of those games.
If we had end of 2022 X, I’d agree with you. But against real competition this year, he’s essentially had one good game (vs OSU), a couple of decent games, and 5 truly horrendous games.
If you’re squinting, you could maybe say that he was starting to play better in the last 3 games. But that’s partially because he had been a negative impact before that.
I'm not saying that X is All-BigTen. Saying "we have enough talent to ..." when our best on-the-ball defender is wildly inconsistent, mediocre at best and has missed a significant amount of games to boot just doesn't jive for me.

Defending the ball at the point of attach is the key to every defensive scheme. The drop-off here when X is out is huge. Everything else breaks down from there. While hands down he is our best player, I would argue that from a defensive standpoint, we are worse off with X out than with Ware.

We have way too much talent to be where we are at right now. When factoring in poor roster construction
I keep reading "we have way too much talent..." and also "we have the worst backcourt in the Big Ten". So it's one or the other.

So in baseball should every level have the same distance for the fence.
The college field requirements are almost identical to the pros.
My confusion has always been around why nothing else really changes with the court between HS, college and the NBA (maybe the width of the paint does too?). Why isn't the free throw line closer for example?

Good one tonight in Lincoln with the 1st place 8-1 Badgers taking on the 5-5 (in conference play) Huskers...All the Nebraska wins have come at home, and all of their losses on the road...
Hope "the little guard" drops 30 on the Badgers

20 inches, but yeah.
But 2.5ft further than HS.
@mrflynn03 NBA and college are basically the same in the corners.
I've always found it odd that it changes at each level. Can you imagine if HS football only had to go 7 yards for a first down, college 8.5, and the NFL had to go 10?

Wisconsin annoys me. I detest Rutgers almost as much as Purdue, "The Barn" is a terrible arena. Juan Howard is a joke.

No. I like watching the other teams grab 15+ O boards, one of the reasons I tune in every game.
Other favorites-- stepping on legos, pulling off hangnails, and folding laundry. 🙄

Seth Greenberg was on a local radio show yesterday and was talking about IU and Woodson. He feels these NBA guys who go to college coaching just don't understand the time commitment that comes with coaching in college. Just saying that the college game is so different and the maturity of the college players are do different. He also think that the college coaches who tries the NBA struggles not understanding the pro game
Which is why I feel like the answer here is for Woodson to hire an assistant head coach (from the college ranks) who would/could eventually take over. No, Fife was not that guy. He may have thought he was but clearly Woody wasn't aligned with that plan.
