Alright, just finished watching the highlight tapes... Are we really comparing Phinisee to this kid?  Phinisee is not on Bates’ level, “tough on defense” upperclassman or not.  He just doesn’t have that kind of frame, athleticism, or shooting ability.

We’ve seen what Phinisee is... He’s just not Big Ten starter material.  But the nice thing is that there should be no preconceived notions or misplaced allegiance to the upperclassmen with the new staff.  Whoever wins the starting spot in practice will get it.  My money’s on X and Bates.

I agree, but also think that we’ll run a three guard set more often than not... especially given the length. I think Lander takes a huge step in the right direction as well. Rob, Parker and Leal will all have active roles too, I would imagine. KL showed some fantastic small glimpses of what he can become for a stretch this past season. Personally, I’d look for Gerome to play a bigger role in the post next season.

  2. Dane Fife will definitely help us here... not saying that we land JW, but if there were ever anyone who could sell the vision of restoring this sleeping giant - it’s Fife. He knows what’s in store for him and how important it is for CMW to be successful. I really like the fact that he’s been on JW for so long, and this would make the transition of losing TJD a lot smoother(even though they’re completely different players). Lots to look forward to in the future.

If I were guessing....it's similar to what Glass did to Wilson. AD hired a law firm to get the goods (be able to fire for cause) because so many players were having issues.

Probably right, and he doesn’t have to take any ownership either. UC people can’t stand their AD. That speaks volumes.

I don't know UC stuff that well but if online world is any indicator...they have some administrator issues and not just the AD. Lewis created enough attention being the assistant designed to stop Michigan. I could see Cincy going after him or Archie very quickly after they fire Brannen.

I live in southeastern Indiana, and listen to ESPN 1530 out of Cincinnati a lot. The entire thing is bizarre, because they’re saying that the administration opened up an investigation, without talking to Brannen about anything. Then they found him guilty of nothing, so they’re launching another investigation, but nobody has any clue as to why! I think and ESPN 1530’s radio guys suggest that the AD is trying to save face for players entering the transfer portal. “HELLO” it’s not like it isn’t happening everywhere! 😂 It’s a mess right now. Remember my Hoosier brethren, it could always be much, much worse!

Also, old-timers like Jack Keefer at Lawrence North will approve of this hire, and other long-time coaches of influence in State.  Big key is running an offense today’s player is excited to join.

I think that he will entice a lot of high profile players to come, considering his NBA schematics.

  6. I personally believe that this will work.

I don’t buy into the “no college coaching experience, or the settled for alum because nobody else wanted the job” talk.

I wanted Stevens like everyone else. However, I believe that given the proper support, he can flourish.

If Woodson can get TJD, Lander, Franklin, Geronimo and Thompson back into the fold... we can win next season, and finish top 5 in the conference. We were in almost every game this past season. I don’t honestly know much about Stewart, but if we can add a solid transfer or two... we could win a lot of those games that we lost this year.

If IU puts the right staff around him, I think the program can get headed in the right direction.

@Danomatic  With Madison dropping out of the Hoosier Hills conference, do you ultimately see them trying to get into the Mid-Southern or another conference?

Sorry, I’ve been away for a bit, but I’m really uncertain. I heard that there was a possibility that they might essentially swap with Silver Creek, but nothing concrete. I’m pretty disappointed in the move myself. We always took great pride in beating the bigger schools, in all sports, when I attended. Winning records in football. Back to back final four state finishes in basketball. Also, nearly back to back state titles in baseball, winning one. To me, lowering the bar for lesser competition is irritating.

Silver Creek wins by 13.  Sherron has things looking up in Madison though.

The Cubs lose quite a bit after the season, but you’ll have that with six seniors. Their 8th grade class is pretty solid and should be decent in a couple of years. They’ll return a couple of kids that have got some big minutes, next season. The Dragons ended up being too much in the last period.

Branden Norther, Silver Creek's point guard is out tonight.  Not sure why.  He's on the bench in street clothes, so it's not Covid related.

That said, there is something wrong with Silver Creek this season.  They are sloppy with the ball and are not solid at all on the defensive end.  They may not win sectional. let alone state, which is what everyone expected of them before the season.

Not having Northern hurts for sure. I haven’t heard why, but I’ll have to check with his dad later. The Dragons pulled ahead, but it’s a nail biter, and might come down to the end of the game. Kaufman looks better thus far in the second half. The Cubs have some quick perimeter players that can shoot and get to the rim. The Dragons might be better off going to a zone.

  10. Silver Creek struggling against a much smaller, but quicker Madison team tonight. Kaufman is having a hard time as well.... not sure about points, but he isn’t scoring much. I think he’s grown a little wider, but he could get bullied his freshman year. Seems to be getting beat to his spot on both sides of the court tonight.

  11. A little late here, but truly disappointed with Vic. I think that I would’ve been less upset if he chose not to go to Orlando at all, given the circumstances. I still have lots of love for him, however, if he moves on in free agency... his legacy will leave a sour taste in a lot of Hoosier/Pacer fan’s mouths. Again, lots of love for Vic, but I’m disappointed.

I realize he's unproven, but I think Hunter can be a 3/4 hybrid. Small sample size, but he has a really nice turnaround J from the low post and is effective in the paint as well as from 3. He needs to work on his handles to get to the rim from the perimeter, but that was an issue with Smith too.

Absolutely agree here. Also thought that Race looked comfortable taking the outside shot last season, albeit a poor percentage.... but that can improve with reps. I really think Hunter can be a versatile threat.

I really love this and feel good about the next several years at this point. Even if Lander and TJD are gone after next year (major if) I like our roster heading into the following season.

Lander will be here for at least two years. I’d be surprised if TJD came back for a third, but not completely if he loves the college game or gets valuable information.

Problem is I think part of the problem with recruiting is the perception that he is already on the hot seat.  I know people don't want to believe it but when fans constantly criticize the coach and talk about them being on a hot seat only hurts recruiting.  You don't think other coaches don't use that in negative recruiting when they see the fan turning on the coach.

I don’t think he’s on the hot seat yet, nor do I think kids believe that. However, the kids that we target won’t come IF what we produce on the court is poor.  That’s what they see, therefore that’s how coaches lose their jobs, or how they’re put on the hot seat in the first place. Win and they’ll come.

At this point, I'm not going to worry about it or even give it much thought.  But, a whiff on our top 3 targets would be deeply concerning.  Our out of state recruiting hasn't been particularly impressive so we'd be hoping for the old "rabbit out of the hat" routine.  For a while I've thought about the situation under Crean around 2015 or so (I just don't remember the particular seasons), where we were having mediocre recruiting success and everyone was pointing to 2017 (?) as a loaded year in-state.  Time came and went and we came away with empty nets.  That was the beginning of the end in some ways for CTC.

It's so early at this point.  I trust we've made and maintained contact with the players we like.  The emphasis in the near term needs to be with the current team and season - as stated, it will be instrumental in future recruiting.

I agree and folks need to know, Archie won’t be given a leash like Crean had previously. If this season doesn’t equal a ticket to the dance, winning a game or two.... Archie will be immediately placed on the hot seat.
