  1. "Until then, perhaps the last word should be given to virologist Dr. Lisa Gralinski, who told The Scientist, “If you’re over fifty or sixty and you have some other health issues and if you’re unlucky enough to be exposed to this virus, it could be very bad.” While everyone else should remain vigilant and take proper precautions (e.g., washing hands and avoiding crowds) until more data comes in, from a scientific perspective the public alarm is disproportionate to the risk."

I truly hope the extreme measures being taken keep this below 50%.

And, if it does last 8 weeks, the impacts to the economy will be staggering.  Small businesses simply cannot survive that kind of layoff.

The small business owner is critical to the economy. They, and their employees,  will be hit hard. Especially those in food, retail, hospitality, tourism, and energy related fields.  Do your best to support your local businesses. The big chains will make it out ok.

Thanks for the follow up. It kind of raises more questions then it answers. I only referenced the one point. Would be nice of them to point to what they are now saying is erroneous.

  4. I believe all IL schools are closed and no church for all of my diocese.

As for MDW, i remember for my first flight in and out of there. Leaving, the plane backed up to the fence to utilize all of the runway. Returning, they have to really lay on the brakes to slow it down and the plane shudders. If you can take that, I've found MDW to be very reliable in getting planes in and out- even in bad weather. Much easier getting in and out as @5fouls mentioned and no waiting for 15 minutes or more taxing around the airport like at O'Hare.

As for a third airport, The St of IL has begun plans and bought a lot of land near Peotone. Since the St has no $, hard to say is, or when, it will get built.

Many people I know on the North side of the city actually prefer to go to Milwaukee instead.

I'm sure people have seen some of the photos but one reason you might not want to be up in the air anytime soon. Check photos online about O'Hare Airport. 6 hour waits to get bags....additional long hours of wait time and literally hundreds of people shoulder to shoulder while waiting. Not really the social distancing you want. Not to mention TSA agent tested positive at Orlando airport. Heaven knows the extent of that person or how many they came in contact with.

Dropped my daughter off at Midway this morning. It was early but minimal crowds, lines

Local tv in Denver has shown lines of people circling Costco buildings, waiting to get in.  As the stores are limiting the numbers allowed in at one time.

I got my gas there Thursday and it was crazy. Looked like Black Friday.

  7. The Costco parking lots around me have been overflowing for days. No idea what they still have. Walmart and Jewel are pretty wiped out. No water, toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectant, frozen vegetables, pasta and very little vegetables and meats. Found a small local grocer near me that had meat and got a few days worth.

I will gladly handle all of Target's cash for them.  Where do I report?

Gotta laugh about the money being a carrier thing.  So, I guess me having to touch a keypad that thousands of other people have touched today in order to type in my pin number is perfectly safe.

    smh.

I'm using my Samsung Pay more often now so I don't have to touch the keypad.

  10. Costco parking lots are overflowing in the Chicago suburbs.  Yesterday they had probably 30 pallets of TP. Took up a whole aisle. Majority were leaving with TP and water.

Walgreens had no TP, no disinfectants and not much flu meds. Feel bad for those coming down with the flu who may actually need something.

Realized I was out of cold and flu meds so I ordered some on Amazon yesterday and is expected to arrive in a week.

Heard this self test from a doctor on tv this morning.  If you can hold your breath for 10 seconds or longer.  You don't have the Coronavirus.

See the post below - from page 6 of this thread.

Not a verified source but saw this on another forum I visit and thought I would share here.  Seems like some good info in it.

A friend forwarded this information that she received from a hyper-vigilant professor friend who is quarantined in China and teaching her university classes on-line. It contains information about how the sickness presents and some further precautions that I have not seen elsewhere, so I thought I would share.

The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days. How can you know if you are infected? By the time you have fever and/or cough and go to the hospital, the lung is usually 50% fibrosis. Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning:

Take a deep breath and hold it for more than 10 seconds. If you do this successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, there is no fibrosis in the lungs; it basically indicates no infection. In critical times, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air.

Serious excellent advice by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat are moist, never dry. Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash them down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and then the lungs. That's very dangerous.

    Also:

    1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold.
    2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
    3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees C. (About 77 degrees F.) It hates the Sun.
    4. If someone sneezes with it, it goes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
    5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface, wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.
    6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill it.
    7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.
    8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
    9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
    10. Can't emphasize enough - drink plenty of water! THE SYMPTOMS:
    1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3/4 days
    2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
    3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
    4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.

First thought. I have a $3.7 million tooling project just getting started. Even with the 25% tariff our proffered vendor out of Colorado which manages tool builds in China is still the lowest price with superior tool builds. They only went back to work a week ago, which is putting us behind schedule. Since our company is Japanese owned and Japan is starting to get slammed with the virus there are serious concerns about the supply chain. It only takes the lack of one part out of hundreds to shut an assembly line down!

  13. The daily Coronavirus death toll is reminiscent of the Vietnam body count. We just had more people die in the Nashville tornado.  1500 people die daily from cancer. We need a little perspective here. Sensible precautions are fine but people are going way overboard.

Plenty of word going around on the non traditional media sites, that it was man made. With an intent to wage a non traditional war with the United States. I was hearing three months before it became common knowledge from a guy I know who owns three businesses in China. It was not supposed to escape in China.  The plan was to discharge it on the United States.  But China screwed up.

I've seen that stuff. I could see where they were researching it with the idea of possibly using against the US. I'm sure we are doing something similar. China screwed up is a major understatement.  Anyways, at this point, while I see it becoming more widespread, agree risk is minimal for people in the US. The effect on the global economy , not so minimal.

I dont care if this sounds crazy but..the chinese are heavily invested in US real estate, are investing and buying up tech companies that control social media to spread anti US propaganda, and have a monopoly on pharmaceuticals.  These bastards are a big player in the opioid epidemic and the importation of fentanyl.  This coronavirus scare is manufactured by the Chinese because they are pissed off about tariffs and trade deals.

We are at war with China. A non traditional war. Its economic and cyber warfare.

I can agree about a non traditional war with China. Don't see how the virus is a part. They certainly didn't intend for it to escape there and bring their economy to a standstill hoping that it might make its way to the US after ravaging major parts of China.
