I agree, but many would say we’re no longer a blue blood program, but for those doubters it sure looks like we’re poised to reclaim that status.

You have to actually win something first. There are a lot of pro franchises who’ve spent a ton of money in free agency and have nothing to show for it. This is uncharted waters for CBB. I’m glad that IU seems to be finally focused on getting in the game, but there’s no such thing as a “hot stove” championship.

I don't believe that, but trusting Cupps, Banks, CJ, and Leal was more of an issue for me.

The bottom line-- lack of guard depth shot us in the foot two years in a row, that can't happen.

Yeah, Newton went public in July of last year about the severity of his injury, one month before he had another surgery and was ruled out for the year. The training staff and coaches had to know he wasn't going to play last season or if so, wouldn't be effective with so little activity.

"Since the spring of 2022, Jakai Newton's body has rarely cooperated with his basketball ambitions.

More specifically, an injured knee that robbed the Indiana freshman guard of all but two weeks of his senior season at Newton High School in Covington, Ga., and is threatening to derail Newton's first season with the Hoosiers."

So, when can Indiana fans expect Newton to be back at full strength? That's ultimately up to the healing timetable of Newton's knee and the advice of IU's training staff and doctors, and as of now, they're opting not to take any unnecessary risks.

That means while the rest of the Hoosiers have been battling on the practice floor since June, Newton has had to watch from the sidelines. He's still studying film every day and listening intently during practice, but his first taste of college competition remains elusive.

"I talked to the Indiana doctors and trainers, and pretty much it's just I gotta take it slow," Newton said. "Like, the injury I got is tough. I've been out for so long, so I gotta build all my muscle back and still just take it easy.

I bet their is no other fan base that worries more about who the 13th scholarship player will be on our team. A lot of programs don't ever use the 13 scholarships but our fans goes ballistic if we don't use it.

It was the circumstances. IU had insufficient guard depth and experience in 22/23 when XJ got injured. They had even less last season when he was injured again. Filling the 13th scholarship doesn't necessarily mean it's the last guy off the bench.

Yeah solid crew, they needed it. Michigan sucked last year.

Gayle shot 28% from 3 last year-- so we know he sucks, an Auburn bench player, a Bama bench player, another one that avged above 10 points one time in CUSA, and a big guy from an Ivy League school...

Johnell Davis would have helped a lot, but MI can really only get grad transfers or freshmen/sophomores. Their limit of only transferring a maximum of 60 credits for undergrads doesn't work for older players unless they already have a degree.

lol Goodman is suuuch a douche

He is, but May is putting together a solid transfer roster. He's added a PG from Auburn, two skilled scoring guards, a stretch 4 and a center who can handle and shoot from the perimeter. Fits how he wants to play.

It also just dawned on me….Tom Crean would make a hell of an AD for somebody someday. His Achilles heel was always in game coaching and adjustments (and finding pants that fit). His long term vision and ability to work the media was always great.

He also had a really good eye for overlooked talent. He’d be good at finding transfer talent

If Woodson isn’t coaching for whatever reason next season, Why limit ourselves to an alum?

I think too much emphasis gets put on “the former IU coaching tree”. Bob Knight didn’t coach under Branch McCracken. Danny Hurley has no connection to Calhoun. K didn’t go to Duke. Self didn’t go to Kansas. Dean Smith didn’t go to UNC. Wooden didn’t go to UCLA.

Go shake some trees and see who is willing to listen. Get the best available coach out there.

The reason I always hear is “oh, they’ll understand the traditions better”.

How about upholding this tradition: win

Didn’t say next season. Also, not a fan of limiting a search to an alum. But we’re seeing that coaches don’t want to leave a good job to go to so-called blue bloods. Roy Williams wouldn’t have left Kansas for anywhere but NC.

I hate to root against anyone, but I hope May crashes and burns at Michigan just to spite every IU fan that is consumed with him.  If he didn't serve as a manager under Knight, you'd see 2/3rds fewer posts about him here.

To be fair, same thing can be said about Woodson. If he didn't play at IU and so forth. He was on zero coaching search list this off season and has yet to win a game with his portal all star team.

Im curious to see if Dusty can lift that program and how quickly. He put FAU on the map for a brief moment but the B1G wont be so nice to him as he is likely aware.

I hope he is largely successful and that he only “crashes and burns” when playing IU.

I actually hope he does well other than against IU. I think he still has something to prove, but the potential is certainly there.  May is only 47. The former IU coaching tree doesn't have many branches. If he's successful at MI, I'd hope at the right time, the IU donors would pony up for his buyout. It's always easier to get someone to leave a job to go to their alma mater.

Duke has no team left. Who's asking why there?

Seven in the portal. Three retuning from an elite 8 team, including a senior walk-on.

“Next season will be Duke head coach Jon Scheyer's first without a single player from the Mike Krzyzewski era. It's shaping up to be a make-or-break year for the Duke alum, who has succeeded in continuing Coach K's perennial recruiting dominance but has failed to reach a final four thus far.  Both of his teams have gone 27-9, with an ACC tournament championship in 2023, but Duke fans are obviously looking for something more.

I am not going to derail the Ballo thread anymore.

I don't think Caitlin Clark would be a D1 men's player, she's 5'11/6ft, not very quick, and weighs probably 160/165?

She'd sure beat a lot of them in a 3pt comp though

Speaking of Caitlin Clark, Greg Doyle is a tool who is getting national attention for the wrong reason.

Number of attempts matters. I don’t think anyone would argue that IU had two sharpshooters last year because Ware and Leal made 40%+ of their threes at low volume. Teams weren’t particularly concerned with Ware shooting threes, despite the high percentage, because he didn’t do it very often. IMO, a 35% shooter that shot 150 threes is better than a 45% shooter who shot 40.

I also think Purdue in particular has a little bit of an inflated 3% all around due to how much attention Edey drew. Plug those guys into most other teams, and they don’t get nearly as many clean looks.

Volume does matter. However, the 40% shooter isn't as elusive as it appears. They are just concentrated on teams that made a concerted effort to recruit and develop shooters. We already talked about Purdue. However, KY had four, Baylor had three, Northwestern had three, Dayton had two plus another at 39%, Duke had three, Colorado had three, etc. All of those players had significant attempts (a couple were below 100).

I don't think it ever reached a VONC.  For the most part, Daniels is a pretty well liked figure in West La-la-land.  I'm sure there were some faculty that had some kind of gripe (justified or not) at some point, there always will be.  But the biggest source of controversy surrounding Daniels was his election to the position.  He had appointed 8 of the 10 board members during his time as governor, although they did rule that a conflict of interest didn't exist.

Some of it is probably the difference in the composition of the academic specialties between the two universities. Engineering, sciences and Ag dominate at Purdue. When I went to IU, the Business School felt like it was on an island much of the time.

Take Heide and Colvin out.  They only shot 58 and 40 3s all season.

That would have put them third and tied for fifth on the IU roster ahead of Cupps and Leal. I wasn't basing it on 100 minimum attempts. I'd love to find a young transfer or two who shot 40% plus, but didn't get a lot of playing time on a very good team.

True, our opinions are based on incomplete information but if pro-Palestinian was an accurate generalization then I don't see how the exhibit should have been cancelled.  Those that were offended could just boycott it.  It would have to move towards antisemitism or saying Israel deserved to be attacked for it to move to towards that line of being cancel worthy imo.   Anyone who complains about becoming a nation of cancelling people for their views should see this in that same light based on what little is known.

But if those posts come to light and are much worse than expected then of course my opinion may change so put an asterisk next to it for now.

I've heard quite a bit of people complaining of liberal bias in universities.  If that is an issue then conservative bias should be just as much an issue.

Just a very quick search of Halaby's comments:

What are your thoughts on the Palestinian situation now?
Growing anger. Something has to change. Israel has to be dismantled and disarmed. They are endangering the entire globe.

Knowing a little about the Eskanazi family, I suspect if the exhibit had not been canceled, the museum would have gotten a stern request to return the $15M the Eskanazis gifted for its renovation. Not even mentioning all of the other millions they've donated to IU.
