I’m curious to see how they pan out too. I think Smith is a a stud, but it’ll be interesting to see how much having a 7’4” 300 lbs guy setting your ball screen every time helped. Plus the chance to just lob anywhere close to the rim….dont get me wrong I still think he’ll be good, but Edey got all of them some easy shots for sure.

And a lot of open second chance opportunities. That’s why, with Ballo, we have to have some perimeter shooters

Zeisloft was a marksman when he transferred in.  He shot 41% and 35% in his two years at Illinois State and 45% and 41% at IU.  That's just cleaning up an already polished diamond.

Watford, I will absolutely give you on that.

Bielfeldt is an example of what Crean's real skill was: finding the diamonds in the rough.  I'm sure coaching played into it, but I think Max's improvement was mostly just due to minutes/usage and being able to hit a rhythm.

The trio of Yogi, Vic and Sheehey (who wasn't a bad outside shooter either) were described as 3 of the biggest gym rats anyone had seen in a generation.  Their improvement was more due to their borderline obscene work ethic.

The players attributed it to Crean and Buckley

Freshman year: 32 games started, 23/76 3PT shooting, 30%.  Kind of meh, right?
Sophomore year, same coach: 36 games started, 88/220 3PT shooting, 40%.

Say hi to Yogi Ferrell, btw.

Kids develop skills.  Kids enhance skills.  Kids evolve their game.

Watch TJD as a sophomore and tell me that this kid would be leading fast breaks as a senior.  Go back and watch DJ White as a freshman vs a senior: went from a high flying mid-range shot blocker into a low post beast.

We have talented players, even ones that were on the roster last year.  Give them time.

Crean and Tim Buckley were excellent at developing shooting skills. Yogi, Vic, Watford, Zeisloft, Bielfeldt all improved their three point shooting under that staff. We haven't seen the same since then.

  4. From ESPN on 4/15. Still looking for that elusive knockdown shooter.

Indiana landed Rice, looking for others in portal

Mike Woodson is wasting no time rebuilding his roster after a down year in Bloomington. The Hoosiers already landed Washington State's Myles Rice, one of the best point guards in the portal.

Outlook: They're also expected to host Stanford's Kanaan Carlyle for a visit this week. Carlyle is a former top-50 recruit capable of explosive performances. Neither Rice nor Carlyle is a knockdown shooter, but Indiana is also pursuing Connor Hickman (Bradley) and Ryan Conwell (Indiana State) to fill that role.

Maybe it’s because he’s a high volume 3 point shooter and we don’t shoot 3’s at a high volume. He averaged a little over 7 attempts per game. In comparison, our highest volume shooter from 3 was MM; he averaged 4.6 attempts.

Probably part of the negative recruiting DC2345 referenced

    That would be correct

I don't know if it's accurate, but there was some chatter that Hickman had concerns with IU's offense and his visit didn't dispel those concerns.

Really? The English Premiere League seems to be doing very well. European soccer leagues have 2 transfer windows a year. Very similar to a transfer portal. To try and have financial fair play they can spend what their revenue is. But that’s a more recent phenomenon. NFL didn’t have a salary cap until the 90’s. Baseball doesn’t have a salary cap that’s capped. Any team can go over and pay an extra tax. US sports leagues have player unions which colleges players don’t have yet.

Which league has 100% free agency, no salary cap, no salary tax and no employment contracts? Also the teams/league don’t make the rules?

They would not had been a final four team without Jones though. He was a big part of their team this year and was big in hiding the other two guards defensively and really spaced the floor well for them with his shooting.  It is what it is and I liked it better the old way…recruiting and watching a kid grow 4 years and enjoying watching them take those steps but the NCAA gave us this crap.

    Oh no doubt.

Watch him make TJD his beotch in these highlights. He is different then Ware for sure. better motor.

I remember I hated the guy and the rest of that AZ team. Thought they were thugs and punks. As long as it isn’t stupid cheap shots like XJ, this team could use some intimidation factor

I know we need a shooter but not sure how many minutes will be available for him. I think Leal, with his knowledge of the system / IQ might be a better option.

In four years, Leal has made 25 threes. Essegian as a freshman, before his back injury (which is supposedly healthy), made 69. Leal is a 65% FT shooter, Essegian is 89%. He also has two years eligibility. He's shown he can come into games and knock down 3 threes in about 6 minutes.

If healthy, he's a better option off the bench than Leal. He has a high Bball IQ. He'd pick things up quickly.

    Neither are good defenders.
