  1. One major factor, IMO, is how patient CMW is with some of our current guys. Personally, I think JG & TB have had a great opportunity to show their talent but have not really seized upon it.  Duncomb? Maybe he's the one long term project, IDK there's not a lot of evidence to know where he stands.  It appears Woodson is more patient than what I'd be and that's probably a good thing.

Another factor is which players, if any, will transfer out.  It's almost expected that one freshman will statistically.

Erring on the cautious side, I don't know how much contribution to expect from the 2 incoming recruits.  It's a big transition.  Also, I'm somewhat concerned with Newton having missed so many games, but maybe he'll return like Calbert did.

Which is why I'm not sure putting together a roster of Portal transfers is the way I'd want IU and Coach Woodson to go...

I mean for a player of a specific need? Sure...But I've seen talk on here about a massive roster overhaul through portal transfers...And I'm not sure that's the formula for success...

Here are the Big 10 transfer rankings coming into this year

Those bottom 5 did pretty well with the talent they had...I know Purdue had Jenkins, who was a decent role player, Iowa has Rebraca, who in his second year in Iowa City has developed into what Robbie Hummel called "a really good 2nd tier Big 10 big man" and we have Kopp and XJ both in their second years, but I think when you start bringing in kids, paricularly 3rd and 4th year kids who've experienced success at their previous schools, like Mayer and Shannon, it's a difficult thing to piece them together with the established players you already have...

I much prefer building through recruiting and developing the players we have...Grow your own so to speak :)

Not saying eschew it completely, but don't establish it as your culture or plan on building a roster around it every year...

    Damn you!

I've been waiting for the opportunity to invoke 'eschew' and you beat me to it.

As for the portal approach, part of it hinges on our players that may want to enter.  I can think of two who might want more playing time.  We can make it moot if XJ gets a waiver, JHS opts for another year of experience and TJD takes Woody up on his offer of 1 more year 🙃

  3. To paraphrase a thought another poster deftly pointed out, this team was better, tougher and much more successful than last years team with almost the same players (JHS in, Stewart & XJ out).  TJD & Gallo were improved, probably same for Kopp.

Hopefully that veteran experience will be advantageous in the post season.

One thing we have to keep in mind heading into the BTT is that it's going to be crapshoot.

This is not a year where a double-bye team is head and shoulders better then their Friday opponent. All of these teams are separated by super small margins.

Exactly.  Any given game can come down to a single play or call, regardless of who's playing who.  That said, please no Larry Scrotto for our games!

  5. I really don't know what to say.  Winning is always better than losing and getting the highest seed we could is a huge plus but going forward in the BTT is as unpredictable as anything.

While we've had some frustrating performances, we won a number of games under CMW that we wouldn't have in the past.

Many of us hoped for a top 3 or 4 finish in the conference, so I'll call it a success.

Man, we are seeing so many kids getting techs on players than ever before.  I rarely saw players in college argue with refs when I was younger. The coaches had a little more control of their team and it was coaches who got on the officials.

Heck, when I was a kid students didn't talk back to teachers often.  Today they assault them.  It's just lack of proper discipline and disregard for others, all throughout society.

I want to see him come back next year and just be a bully.  Instant jump into NPOY conversation.

What he may lack in athletic ability or height is countered by his strenght already- particularly lower body.  He also seems to have very good body control.

I don't know...What were the expectations with 2 senior bigs playing in front of him in his freshman season?

Well, for a lot of fans a 5-star will automatically be a one-and-done before they ever suit up, lol.  I could see a highly regarded big as a possible challenge to RT as a starter to some.  From the outside (especially outside the B10) I doubt many don't even know who Race is, so by statistics alone MR might appear disappointing.

I've come to take a wait and see attitude with recruits, you just never know.  In fact, in the first several games it appeared MR might be the better freshman between he and JHS.
