I didn't completely follow your point there, so apologies if I'm misinterpret it, but my post wasn't about TJD being a good teammate or willing passer, etc. He was clearly both.

But, we ran a two-post offense largely the last two years that was centered around TJD operating out of the right block, with another post typically also in the paint area.

It was the right move for our personnel. But, it is not ideal for the way the game is played now or for perimeter guys to showcase their skills. The lane was almost always clogged.

I'm just saying, maybe Bates looks different in an offense with one big that is largely setting ball screens and leaving an open lane for our perimeter players to get to the basket, etc. A more space oriented offense.

I'm very interested to see what our offense will look like going forward.  I'm not an X's& O's guy, but I think it's obvious that the systems (and personnel) the E8 teams run is more effective.  Nothing against Kopp, but as an example when I'd see him come down on offense and go to his corner like he had been put in a "time-out" it was hard to believe that it made life difficult for the other team's defense.  I realize it was a result of our 2-post offense (and personnel).

I really think we're sleeping on this kid. I think he's better then Braeden Smith, and if Smith can start and play major minutes on a Big Ten Title, BTT title and #1 seed team, then Cupps can be an effective, consistent rotation contributor for IU next season.

I think this is quite possible but I still have to temper my expectations.  There are 2 things that are undisputable facts, though: 1) He's a coaches son and that is almost always a positive, and 2) the young man is clearly invested (already) in the program's success.  In that regard he reminds me of Rob Phinessee before during his senior year of HS.  I'm very happy that he'll donning the candystripes soon.

Pretty sure Graham would solve rebounding problems we've been talking about?>

While I do want to see us go to a more athletic style of play, I think we need to be able to play the big ten style.  I've always felt it is easier to slow an opponent down than speed them up and like it or not we'll have to deal with it in B10 play.

I mostly want us to attack the portal with proven players that can and will contribute.

It was stated on another site, IU isn't done with their exit interviews...... Logan was told in Feb he wasn't welcomed back.

    Not my info.

I'm sure it's not a pleasant conversation to have, but it was a necessary one.

With how Dolson appears to have structured the BB program, modeled somewhat after a pro team, and changes in the NCAA (portal, ie free agency), success requires difficult choices.

Specifically with Duncomb he was recruited by Miller, declined the suggestion to redshirt as a freshman, and it seems didn't impress Woodson with his work ethic (and did earn a suspension last season).  He seemed to be the most likely to be gone.

  5. Regarding Bates, he's a head scratcher for me.  He seems gifted enough to be a borderline starter but not a primary or go-to guy.  I'm pretty unimpressed with his development in the past 12 months, but he wouldn't be the first player to have a sudden jump from one season to the next.

What concerns me most is relying on multiple players to make significant improvement in the off season, particularly with non-freshmen.  More often than not it hasn't materialized - at least the past few years.

Of our freshmen this past season, Reneau & Banks stood out the most to me.  It will be interesting to see how/if Woodson's offense changes without focusing on TJD.

I don’t have a subscription to the Indy Star, but I saw a headline for an article by a guy named Doyle. He said we just witnessed an IU team quit in an NCAA tournament game.

I hato to say it but he’s more right than wrong. If anyone can link the article, that would be cool.

    This one still stings.

Doyel is the print version of Dakich, minus any actual experience.

Nobody "quit" - they got out hustled and simply beaten by better players.

The thing is it wasn't a rhythm 3 pointers , he rushed it and was going forward instead of going up and down. I love the 3 on a fast break but not off the dribble especially for Kopp. It is better if it is a kickout and the shooter can just catch and shoot

That shot looked like an attempted "buzzer beater".

10mil difference from 15 to 5.  Can he play himself into top 5 next year?  Maybe.  He has the size and definitely the talent.  If he could settle in around 20+ points a game and a good t/a ratio he could easily be a top 5 pick with his tools.  Is the risk of injury playing on what could be a inferior talented team which could cause him not to be as free to do what he does worth it?  Would it lower his stock?

I would love to have him another year.  I think he will be very special next year if he stays.  Also i guess it could depend on how much money they can get him with the NIL, could be able to offset the loss of the 3mil paycheck next year if he goes.

Will be interesting to see what happens.  I hope he decides quickly though so we can hit the portal hard.

Heck, I'd really like to see it too.  Especially if paired with an experienced, quick point guard (XJ).  That could be really a dynamic combo.

Great player but I cannot say he maxed out. The lack of a jump shot, even a FT length jumper, over four seasons is a mystery that may never be solved.

A jumper would be great but he was forced to play in the lane for this team.  A jump shot will be essential for his NBA aspirations I'd imagine.

  10. Nothing but respect to TJD.  He made significant improvement every season he played - something we've not seen from our team in recent years.  Probably maxed out his development as a CBB player.  Hopefully he can carve out a role at the next level and continue to be a great representative of the program.

Well I stayed away from here before, during and after the game. I had a feeling we would come out flat, give no effort, while their quick guards blew by ours.

REBOUNDING is EFFORT!!! We let 6'4 and 6'5 guys kick our ass on the glass. Our 3 and 4 men are the worst rebounder's in the history of basketball. I'm glad they are gone! Yes I said it. JHS is NOT A PRO!! yet. Woody needs to put the brakes on this kid if he returns. Teach what a damn good shot is.

Addition by subtraction, T.Bates, JG, Duncomb, Leal, Hit the portal, you are a waste of time and scholly's. Simple, you bring nothing to this team, you don't belong here. I'm tired of watching crap effort in the biggest games of the year. Harsh, nope, these kids make big money, EARN IT!!

The portal better be kind to Woodson or next year we finish at the bottom of the Big Ten with whats left on this team and whats coming in. Awful.

I reluctantly upvote this.  Pretty frank & critical assessment - but not wrong.

In a sense our roster is now in a similar situation to where it was when Crean was dismissed.  Woodson had limited pieces to work with and did pretty well, IMO.

At some point, being when first taking over or now he's got to decide how he's going to build a truly great team.  Standing pat and prioritizing "loyalty" ain't gonna get us there.  All avenues need to be exploited, and successfully - especially the portal and the 2024 class.

This is a very critical period in his tenure.  I DO feel better about his commitment and judgement than I did with Archie.  The next several weeks will be very interesting.

The Big Ten has had 26 teams make the tournament the last three years and are 4-26 getting to the Sweet 16.

The Big 10 HQ should be proud. They have made the conference a joke.

Coaches need to stop building their teams for, and playing "brute ball".  If it's National Tournament success you prioritize, donv't worry about competing for the lesser prize.

Speaking of ill advised shots, the long three Kopp took after stealing the ball with is up three was what turned the tide back in Miami’s favor. I told my wife at that point I was worried that rushed shot and not slowing the game down to our pace was going to come back to bite us.

    Bingo.

I don't like to single out an individual play or player, but that was incredibly awful judgement.  I believe Miami scored after that, then JHS threw up another brick and they scored again.  Our momentum was dead in it's tracks.
