  1. Everytime we get a coach you can repo that they believe they can win at any level here including a national title.

Archie’s brother even said “don’t leave Dayton unless it a program that can enable you to win it all.”

IU has that ability. Who we can land idk. But anyone we do isn’t coming here feeling they have to win a title they’re here because they believe they can do it.

They all have egos the size of a semi. They all want to be the guy to fixes this program.

Thats because it DOES have the things they’d need to do it.

Why haven’t we landed a big name? Well often there’s not a big name available when we need one. 🤷🏻‍♂️ lateral moves don’t make sense so you end with a pool of 1-2 guys even POSSIBLE. Small pool.

I also have questioned if we’d spend the top end money in the past. But I don’t have that fear AS much (still there some).

outside of that I’m not sure

What I find so very disappointing and infuriating and just largely unacceptable, is that virtually everything that is being discussed right now as things that need to be done and addressed as we move forward, are things that were already known and needed to be done a year ago (or more).

Improved outside shooting, better guards/guard play, rebounding, better fundamentals (free throws, blocking out, etc.), better implementation of a modern college offense, better three point defense, etc.

ALL of this was already known but has not been adequately addressed. This is why I now have such a tremendously reduced confidence in this staff. It's like we've lost a year (or more), gotten worse, and there have not been signs of making the right changes or adjustments.

I just don't trust these guys to do what is needed.

This post needs to be framed and hung on the wall of my family room

Do you have first hand knowledge that this is the case?

I have to ask because just a couple of posts above yours, Thad Matta is quoted as saying he has a lit of respect for Coach Woodson.

We all watch the games, so we have some perspective to form an opinion on his coaching style and results.  However, I certainly have no inside knowledge on whether Woodson or the assistants 'sit on their asphalt' or not.

I do recall, at least early on in his tenure, there were several posts that indicated Woodson was at the athletic facilities much more frequently than Archie.  That at least implies a good work ethic.

I want a new coach soon but everything I’ve read is that Woodson is very engaged with recruiting so this flies in the face of that. Not a fan from the beginning BUT I want to be level headed and fair also

My issue is coaching college basketball rather than the Kentucky model of only recruiting high level talent with promises of the NBA. That’s recruiting and not coaching. Getting more with less. Building a competent college basketball roster and the respect and ability to teach, develop and adapt. Establishing a winning culture with accountability.

I just think it’s a reasonable expectation to get good basketball when the coach makes 4.5 million and considering the NIL and transfer portal assist a new coach in building a competitive squad quickly. Not to mention the historically iconic branding, alumni support and a basketball rich landscape to recruit from.

I feel like we have uninspiring Archieball but now with IU ties. Unless you’re 60ish, how many had really heard of Woodson. I sure hadn’t. Also, I don’t recall it being made public of any other blue blood programs such as UCLA or any high level programs reaching out to Woodson over the years to bring his wisdom to the college ranks.

In my opinion after having seen Woodson have a go here at IU, some NBA coaches are more of a manager than an actual coach. Not to say that there aren’t really good coaches in the NBA. I just think a team loaded with supreme talent can make any manager look like a great coach.

So to me, wasting more time on hoping the right kids sign is just putting off the inevitable. What happens after they leave for the NBA after year one. We suck again in a down year?
    ~end soapbox~

I think this post absolutely nails it

I do not think CMW should be fired after this season. And the bottom line is that he is ultimately responsible for the results on the floor. However…

I did some reading about the responsibilities of the rest of the staff. From what I understand, Kenya is the primary guy in developing the bigs. I think we can all agree that he has done an excellent job over the last 3 years.

I’m not as clear as to who is the guy working with the 1-3 positions. I did read that Calbert’s title is Director of Player Development. I don’t know whether he is succeeding in that role or if he is just the administrator and the assistant coaches are the hands on guys.

All that said, I do believe that the staff needs to be evaluated this offseason and it might be time for an upgrade. I would look at how Michigan has brought in Martelli as essentially a second head coach to Howard. I think Dolsen should look at a May or Michael Lewis for the spot with the understanding/agreement that he takes over either at Woodson’s retirement or removal. Call it an exit strategy… done all the time in corporate management.

I have NO idea whether Lewis couod do it or not. I’m ignorant. Why? Just asking

Quite frankly we had 2 assistant coaches in Fife and Matta we sent packing that both surpassed Woody in Knowledge and experience. No question about it. If you want a quick fix I say hire Bruce Pearl He knows how to win and recruit! And his players will walk through fire for him. Talk about motivation and passion Bruce has it! He may not be a perfect choice, but winning solves a lot of problems' and He wins!

I would’ve said yes earlier on but I’ve read enough people that know him that makes me feel “eh.”

Idk who we should go after if or when the time comes

  7. I think the gaps in this roster are a real flat tire. Thats on Woodson anyone could see potentially it would be that way from a mile away. But here we are and it limits it greatly. You can’t NOT have good shooters with good post players and be a balanced team. I’m to the point I’m ready to play the walk on guards if they’ll shoot and hit them to open things up.

And I can NOT for the life of me figure out why we help so much on the perimeter when we have a shot blocker like Ware. Play up on their faces and if they beat you follow them in and trust the bigs will protect the rim. 🤷🏻‍♂️

BUT with that said I do believe this roster is better than it’s performing. I feel if we were a lot better defensively we’d be a lot better even without enough shooters. But we aren’t. And that’s on Woodson and he needs to publically own it and stop pointing fingers at the players. IMO

I’m rambling but yes I agree

  8. I’m getting tired of him not taking ownership of the ship. I can’t stand how our perimeter defense is bad, and continues to BE bad, and it seems nothing is changing. I’m concerned about his recruiting. Not the talent but the construction there of. There have been issues any average fan could see needed addressed and somehow they weren’t. Why? How?

WITH THAT BEING SAID, I have zero desire for him to be fired after this season. That’s ridiculous. But we need to see that we are back on track next season and building the program to a better spot. Idc what that takes in the portal or HS talent. But we can’t have another season like this weird one or very few players will want to come. Then it snow balls quickly and he won’t make it. I want him to succeed. He’s an IU guy and he LOVES this program. Can’t ask for a better guy to succeed here.

But as awesome of a guy as he is, he isn’t paid millions to appear to be a great fit. He needs to BE a great fit and get us back.

So let’s get this done coach! 💪🏻

here's something to think about though...how confident would you feel if Woodson went out and got a bunch of off the radar guys with 3 stars by their names?  does anyone really think he'd turn them into a finely tuned machine?  does anyone think we'd be better off?

I honestly don’t care what he does if he gets us into the top 10 consistently and the expectation every year is finish in the top half of conference, fight for conference titles every 2-3 years and make runs semi consistently in the tourney with an eventual championship.

3,4,5 star idc just get it done.

just not sure i agree with the good job of developing part

We don’t have enough of a sample size to determine either way. I felt that would be one of his great strengths. It seems pro players attribute that strength to him. So far here you can argue Trayce but after that it gets to be a little bit of a stretch.

So no I’m not one to say “one thing we know for sure is Woodson develops players.” I don’t feel I agree with that…yet.

  11. Well I can add more.

My son got a perfect score on his ACT and could go anywhere. We toured 28 schools across the Midwest and south and East coast. I got to see it all. Everyone with official tours. He was open to considering IU and had gone in MS to a game. He loved the campus.

IU was one of the last we toured heading home on a third road trip.

The tour we got was BY FAR the worst tour of any. The large group time was boring as heck. Poor salesmanship on the school. We got two young men to lead our tour that were so lacking enthusiasm amor knowledge of the school and area (you get asked generally how cold it is in the winter by someone from TX and you say “idk really maybe 10-15 degrees most the winter…idk”) and they couldn’t answer half the questions asked and said his major was boring. Half the people in our tour slipped away during it to just go home. It was painful.

So bad I called the school to give constructive feedback. She assured me there would be changes and due to my sons academic standing if they could have a second chance to have their regional recruiter contact him and discuss the school further and visit him in the coming month or two. I have her his cell and said “I’d like that.”

    They never called.

  12. Well, I’m 5’9” but had a 29 inch vertical in HS. No dunking but I was little and had a post player (friend) in a pick up game think it would be funny to give me a shove in the back a little as I was going up. He didn’t ever mean or think I’d go flying but I landed from my max jump flat on my back.

It didn’t hurt I landed perfectly, but I hopped up and started screaming at him. Scariest thing that ever happened to me playing hoops in my life.

It depends what the roster looks like, if we have guys with injuries. So did you have high expectations for Crean's first couple of years. To me expectations are based on what your current roster is and not that we have won 5 championships in the past

My expectations are based on a growth towards a standard of IU basketball that I believe is reasonable to expect for a program that offers what we offer big picture.

and I dare say Woodson of all people share the same expectations…

When we are rebuilt, which should NOT take more than four years, we LIVE inside the top 25, typical is top 15, we make the tourney 9/10 years, a Final Four at least once every 6-10 years and a Banner is hung again.

I expect overall a trend showing each season that we are progressing towards that end. And that doesn’t mean each of the first four years we have more wins. But a culture is being built.

I hope Woodson gets us there because I like him
