I think that is the winter I was referring to. I remember driving on I294 late in the day and was shocked at the lack of traffic. The heater in my car was not strong enough to defrost my rear windshield.

Chicago also had record cold this summer but doubt many noticed- https://chicago.curbed.com/2019/6/19/18691540/chicago-weather-summer-rain-cold

I'll throw in one other thing...having lived in Greenland for a year (and unless there are enough natural resources to power the planet for a million years, they can keep that icecube) once it goes past -20 (coldest I saw was -45) there's not a helluva lot of difference on the miserability scale.

Below around 1990 all in the Chgo area-

I can't remember the exact year (90? 91?) when my family and I traveled back on our yearly Christmas time trek to Terre Haute from the Florida panhandle. Was 32 when we left Fort Walton Beach, -8 in Birmingham and a wake you up -22 in Vincennes.

When we upacked at Mom's house, I forgot to bring in a 6 pack of soda which exploded. Luckily, it was so cold it immediately froze and I picked the whole mess up with 1 hand. Didn't even leave a stain.

The best way to avoid jury duty is to start randomly twitching and periodically yell "fry that bastard"!!!

I live in a small town in southeast Texas, where a sizable portion of thier revenue is money collected for traffic violations. I've been in the jury pool twice. First time, only 3 people, including myself, showed up, so I felt obligated.

Turns out it's better than anything on TV (it's night court). I've had jury cohorts dressed in moo-moos, house coats, and overalls. About all of them are older than me, and half carry oxygen tanks, but still hustle out to butt one off during jury breaks. The lawyers are not creme de la creme, but are entertaining none the less.

I might suffer from a tinge of civic duty, but the entertainment value keeps me coming back.

Former NBA player Reggie Harding (who stood 7 feet tall), turned to crime after his pro career didn't pan out. Wearing a ski mask, he attempted to rob a gas station (have also heard liquor store, not sure which) that he lived nearby. Upon seeing a 7 foot tall man in a ski mask, brandishing a gun, the clerk said "I know it's you Reggie". Harding's response....

"It ain't me, man! Now shut up and give me the money."

Ah, good old Reggie Harding. I remember his short stint with the Pacers. Guy was quite a physical specimen.

I recall that he was shot dead somewhere in a street altercation when he was still a relatively young man.

It's tough.  It took weeks if not months to make the decision because he wasn't sick,  just his mobility and quality of life was becoming such a struggle.  Then I have this lady sitting in the waiting room who literally fosters old dogs tell me "oh, he still has fight in him."  Poor guy fell twice in the waiting room you dumbass, it's not his mind, it's his body.

My wife took the last two dogs to their final vet visit. It was time for both of them as you could see they were suffering.

On the way, she stopped at McDonalds and got both of them a large order of Chicken McNuggets. She said they both gobbled them up and looked happy.

    She's a sweet woman.

Or, if you happen to have one of those low-calorie conditions, Portillos chocolate cake shake (or during summer, the lemon cake shake). A big hunk of their cake thrown in a blender with ice cream.

Yes, it's as obscene as it sounds but good God is it good. It's a DQ Blizzard in a fat suit. One of those things that you know how ridiculously bad it is for you, but is so good you don't care.

I forgot about those...They are great. When I initially read the calorie count, I promised myself, "ok, this is a once in a lifetime treat, so go for it! "

And I've been true to my word...if I was a dozen cats...

Ours is buried right outside our kids' bedroom window. Able to keep guard, just like she would have wanted.

A friend of my wife has buried 5 horses on her 5 acre property. She just had one pass away last week...Cost her $400 for a guy to come in and dig the hole with a backhoe.

But, she says she wants them near her always...

So this critter in need showed up a couple weeks before last Christmas.  Did everything we could to bring her back to health.  Had a good 6 months and suddenly lost her today.

We have others but this loss is hitting my wife hard.

Yeah, I have 3 wooden boxes sitting on our mantle. The ashes of 2 dogs and a horse (well, SOME of the ashes of a horse...the whole thing would have required a box 3 feet tall and weighed 70 lbs).

Shows what a softie I am for them...

Love Giordano.  We are going to try Art of Pizsa in Chicago this weekend. Any good food recommendations for Chicago. Something that is kinda unique to the city.

We The Pizza in DC is amazing

The obvious choice for me would be Portillos. A Chicago institution. Reasonable prices and good burgers, Chicago dogs, Italian beef, and if you can find one with a Barnelli's pasta attached, some pretty awesome pasta dishes (the Peasant Pasta and the Chicken Diavolo are both excellent). Very comfortable place to take kids too.

And their chocolate cake is killer...

I prefer Giordanos, Ginos East and Lou Malnatis in that order. Years ago, my office was across the street from a Home Run Inn and we would hit up their lunch buffet. My kids like Home Run Inn more than I do. Beggars is a good one too.

Mile, have we got your mouth watering yet?

There's a lot of great pizza in the Chicagoland area. We use to go the the HR Inn in Lemont, and on Friday or Saturday it was an hour wait. I'm just happy to get their frozen pizza ( at HEB along with Nick and Vito's too) down here in Texas. Damn good for frozen.

Had to see what they had for Illinois. I figured it'd be Nick and Vito's. Good, but my favorite is Home Run Inn.

When talking deep dish, they mention Geno's and Pequod's, but I think Lou Malnati's is better than both of those.

Used to do a fair amount of air travel but now it's limited to just a few trips each year. For our posters who travel the skies often I'm sure they could add several. My few are those who try to run up the aisle and get off plane before others, people who take their shoes off while flying to be comfortable, those who can't seem to talk at a normal tone to the person next to them, and the window seat passenger who gets up 4-5x during a flight. Was on a flight from Indy to Atlanta few weeks ago. Air travel is about 1 hr 15 minutes. This must have been some active bladder because it was 4x during the flight alone. Never an offer of I'm sorry or whatever.

I don't have any to add, but I will say of all the far-fetched futuristic stuff I've ever seen on TV, the Star Trek Teleporter is the one I'd like to see actually developed. Says it all about what I think about air travel.
