wait.  now i'm confused.  i was thinking we were talking about Gunn and the Wisconsin kid.

i was talking about the rutgers kid.

Gunn shouldn’t reacted the way he did. I’m OK with the Gunn ejection. Would have been ok with a F1 or even no call and talking to both players and warning.

so there's no way you could have ejected the Rutgers player.  i think if the official say it, he should have stepped in and told him to break it up, but isn't that about all that could have been done?

not sure I’m following you here

I think the Rutgers player should have been ejected.

for me it's not the secondary head to chest, it's the intentional head butt prior, that happened to miss. Followed by the insignificant contact. If we are going to come one here and blame XJ for his actions and leave the Rutgers kid off scot free, we have to do the same in this situation, no? I realize XJ's actions were a lot worse but so was the reaction from Rutgers. Same here, the head butt wasn't terrible, but the reaction was also nothingness.

    This is spot on

the rutgers kid should have ejected.

But you are correct. if the rutgers kid was not ejected or foul upgraded because it was a reaction the same should have applied to Gunn. The rutgers player was called for a foul. It should have called flagrant not just a foul. He should have got an F2 also and been tossed. I’m ok with the F2 on Gunn. Not sure are watching the video as an official i don’t get with both coaches and players and call nothing and tell them to knock the shit off. Gunn pushed of and his forearm and elbow hit the guy in shoulder and then went to neck/cheek. contact was not much. Given what lead up to the forearm a no call and talk with players would have been fine. Calling Gunn for a foul F1 or F2 was fine also If you as me i would have called nothing and moved o. with warnings. Both players in the wrong.

Unfortunately, this IU team is the worst combination. The media narrative and to the casual CBB fan they appear to be a team of punks. In reality, they're soft, especially mentally soft, so opposing teams know they can bait them into dumb responses.

    you are probably right

Loosing is taking a toll on this team and there confidence. The way they have lost is weighing on them as well. You can see it in their body language and faces when the other goes on a run.

Need to find some in the court leadership fast.

  5. Not sure why everything thinks the IU team is full of punks. Yes X has acted like it on several occasions and will have to deal with that label. Gunn has one instance and no one else in team has any that I can think of. Gunn reacted poorly and didn’t throw anything with force

2 guys a lot of fans would take as our coach. Fife and Michael Lewis played hard a little dirty  Yet we treat them like heroes

Back to Gunn. I’m Ok with a a F2 or F1. Could have been called nothing. X deserved a F2 for the nut shot. But the Nebraska player should have gotten a F2 also. the play wasn’t blown dead till have he dropped X. if the refs decided not to throw him out because he got hit first than the same logic could have applied to gunn and just left it a foul. Again i think a F2 was Ok and the right call. But it wasn’t extreme contact and could have been dealt with differently. Sparks F1 was a hook and hold but not sure it should have called an F1. He got bulldozed by Edey and both players hooked and held. Sparks was falling down and was the second to let go. That could have and should have stayed a regular foul.  Could have easily went against Edey because he created contact and dislodged sparks. Kaufman-Renn got hooked and held by Iowa when trying to jump and got pulled to the ground by Perkins and it was only called a foul and not reviewed. It was blatant and not even reviewed

.....When one your best players is admits there is disconnect with the team, that's when you know it's bad.

Disconnect can be like a Cancer that to a team. The big difference is, disconnect is mental and can be fixed through respect, attitude change and winning.

“We’ve got to figure out how to be one on the court,” Reneau said. “I feel like we’re kind of disconnected in some ways.”

“I feel like the disconnection starts when [opponents] go on their runs,” Reneau said, “and I feel like we start to not trust each other.”

This team really lacks on the court leadership. Verbally and by play. There is none one to go make a play when things get tough. Reneau does his best but sometimes has to force it. Galloway tries too.  But this team has times where struggles to get stops and score. X has been a major disappointment in leadership. No one gets into the other guys to step it up

i just don't see it that way.  i mean we can say TJD got better over 6 years or whatever.  he did.  don't most?  he didn't improve his range or ballhandling, expand his game, he just got better at what he did.  again, JHS got off to a slow start because Woodson had him playing out of position.  he was forced to play him at PG when X went down and that's when he "improved."  Thompson got better?  okay i guess.  over 6 years he got a little better.  Galloway is still pretty much the same player.  in his 4th year he is shooting a little better.  Reneau is better because he is getting the chance to play a bigger role.

TJD ball handling and passing went from poor as a freshman to big reason why he got drafted. the ability to drive from wing and free throw line. Galloway is a dramatically different player.  Some of that comes with age and some from player development. Not giving the staff for player improvement is not fair. Blaming the staff for style of playing roster construction is fair. I think the staff makes good adjustments and in game coaching is good for the most part. Things are definitely not going good right now and it some off that clearly falls on the coaches and Woodson.

I think most of our problems are falling on Johnson not playing the way he should be. Gunn and banks struggling to be consistent.

Anyone who doesn't think TJD and Reneau improved considerably in their time here either hasn't watched us play enough or is too blinded by their dislike of this year's team to see painfully obvious truths. It's never easy to know where the credit should be placed when guys get better, but they clearly got much better. The simple fact that TJD was drafted to a guaranteed contract when he had been told before that wouldn't happen is pretty strong evidence. As are his numbers. What I was most impressed by is the way he developed touch. He missed so many close in shots his sophomore year, but by his senior year he was deft around the rim. His assists and blocks point to his obvious improvements there. The difference was enormous.

We saw them over a smaller window, so it's harder to say with Ware and JHS, but Ware's numbers make it clear he has improved and JHS outperformed his ranking.

I'm open to the idea that last year's team should have been better than it was given the parts, but that's different than saying guys didn't significantly improve. They did.

TJD clearly got better the last two years. JHS clearly got better. Thompson got better. Galloway got better. Reneau couldn’t defend the perimeter last year at all. He is getting better game by game. Some want him as a 5 but he is not a 5. He can play the 5 some but for him to be successful he need stomach as 4. He is shooting the ball from 3 very well. Handling the ball better. Reneau as a sophomore is ahead of were TJD was in a lot of areas. But Malik is not the athlete that TJD was He is better a the 4 because he struggles against the length of most 5.

People can complain about the coaches all they want. But they have clearly made most players better. Coaches only can help players get better. But it is on the players as much as the coaches. Some improve some don’t

And if that isn’t enough to bust your ass and send somebody through a wall in cow country, I don’t know what is. But I’m sure they don’t care.

I guess he feels real good to be 1-2 against IU teams that aren’t very good while being ranked top 10

  10. Somehow we probably match up better with Wisconsin and have a better chance of winning.

Edey just clogs up the middle so much

Will be hard to win in Madison but not impossible.

Need to play a complete game and get something for X or play him very limited minutes and use more Cupps and Gunn

  11. the officiating killed the game flow and took IU out of the game and played into the hands of Purdue. Purdue was allowed to grab, push and not play vertical on every interior shot or layup.

We still probably loose but it could have allowed a little game pressure

They would have fouled out if they played more in the first half. The officials didn’t want them in the game. Not paying the fouls called on them weren’t fouls. not called the same in the other end

Loyer flopped on MM first foul. Push johnson down and called a foul on johnson.

Not sure how you call a F1 on johnson either.

Johnson played like shit again. We can’t win any big games unless he plays better

I believe that people think that is the case but I don't think the NBA is going to draft Mgbako.  So then what?

That maybe the case for now. If he continues to improve he very well may go pro. JHS came on strong in middle of january till the end of season and flew up the draft board.

I personally think he will play another year in college unless he drastically improves. Certainly time left for him to that. More than likely he is back

  14. Not sure it matters even if ever comes back that can come back. There are minutes to be had with walker leaving.  Getting to practice against Reneau and Ware is only going to make you better. Queen is not likely to be a one and done. He is more like Reneau it will take some time. He has work to on getting into better shape and stronger.

He has the ability to drive the ball, nice footwork and soft touch. His game looked compare Reneau with except the jump shot range

I think that's a little unfair to Sparks.  Kid plays his butt off every time he's on the floor.  Edey takes advantage of timidness from guys who have no idea how to handle his size.  With Sparks you could very well have someone that picks up 3 fouls in less than 2 minutes.  Or, you could get someone that takes Edey a little off his game by being aggressive.

I think it's worth a shot somewhere in the middle of the first half and see how it works.

i think you have to sparks a little floor time. Just be physical and see what happens.

Make Edey guard Ware all over the floor and Let Sparks try to post him up.  If Edey guards Reneau or gets switch on him  drive him or space out to the 3.  Both Reneau  and Ware can pull Edey out to the perimeter and allow the other to post up.  Sparks is different than both  He is the only to be physically and have some real size  Have to give him a few minutes

He shouldn't.  But, it will be a coaching decision, not a formal suspension.

I hope coach gives him some kind of discipline. Not sure a suspension is needed

I remember Fife with a bit sack tap on an out of bounds play and tackling a guy and bitting him after a getting tangled up on rebound. Fife played pretty dirty

I don’t like johnson’s act either. it was dirty and no place for it. But not sure a suspension is necessary now. do it again and suspend him

If there was no nut tap it was an F1 on Rutgers for sure….maybe F2

Then it still should have been. They both deserved a F1 or F2. It is poor officiating to say your attack was a response so we will give you a pass.  Two wrongs don’t make it right

They didn't stop play at the nutsack tap, the stopped play at the personal foul on the Rutgers player. That foul was called.

You want to argue that it was an F1 for a shove? I mean I guess, but I think it was handled correctly and I wish refs would consistently do that. You see someone do a cheap shot? Deal with that person, not someone who has a very normal, expected response to pushing you after you do that.

    Sorry

I thought they removed the foul from rutgers player. That makes sense.  I do believe that an F1 or F2 should have been called on rutgers player. he went after X and shoved him to the ground.

  19. I get that x got tossed and deserved too. How it the play stopped and a foul called on Rutgers player. Switched to X and nothing given to the rutgers kid for forearm shiver. I get X sold it a little bit. But the kid went after X and at a minimum should have been given a dead ball T if you are stoping the play at the nut sack tap. Both players should have been tossed. IU should have shot T foul shots. probably would have missed but still have to call it

  20. Ware is just not strong.  He gets bumped and can’t hang onto the ball or keep his balance.

MM needs to learn to play with  thru contact and get stronger too.

Reneau does jump well in a crowd and needs to learn to use his body to move guys.

If this team could rebound the ball with fumbling it around they would get out in transition more. Not give up so many offensive rebounds. Put game pressure on the other team. And have more wins

X needs to quit acting like a punk and complaining about every call. When plays good and under control we are tough to beat. When plays out of control and too fast we suck
