I grew up about 3 hours from St. Louis, 4 hours from Cincinnati and about 6 from Chicago. Both of my parents are native Chicagoans, specifically dad being a south side native and a Sox fan. And who did I pick as my team? The Mets. That’s right, rather than side with one group, I just decided to piss off everyone. I know that’s absolutely shocking, given the source.

Well, that was the source of the sarcasm. There’s nobody relatively skilled on the job market, so you take the scraps that you find.

It’s a crapshoot. I had some concrete work done earlier this year. My wife found the guy on Facebook Marketplace. Turns out, he’s a union laborer that primarily pours concrete anyway, and just picks up side gigs when he has the time. Was a good 20% cheaper than any other quote we had, and did a competent enough job.

My neighbor has a small commercial HVAC business. He says with today’s candidates, he’s happy to find someone “semi-skilled”, meaning they have a double digit IQ, a pulse and know the difference between a Phillips and slotted screwdriver without asking Siri.

Just judging visually from those pictures….kid has a frame that a D1 strength coach would salivate over. Good natural size for high school, but a D1 program could hang 15 lbs of muscle on him before his sophomore year.

Their non-conference schedule was more of a meat grinder than IU’s: IMG Academy, Louisville Trinity, Louisville DuPont Manuel, Indianapolis Cathedral and Trotwood-Madison. Oh, their “local” schedule….just the other power Cincinnati programs: Colerain, Moeller, St. X and Elder. A schedule like that should come with a black leather catsuit and a whip, because whoever scheduled it clearly enjoys torture.

Starting to look like my wife’s academic transcript. Both of her (current) degrees are through Northern Kentucky, but she’s taken classes and has credits from Eastern Kentucky and UK. I joke that she needs to get at least one class or certificate from WKU, just to complete the compass.

If there is a bright side, due to the shortage, it’s going to be possible for the current generation of kids to earn a pretty decent living though a skilled trade….provided there’s enough training.

Love it. Let’s not forget, it’s not just motivation to the players. Woodson and Fife both wore the uniform but can’t lay claim to one of those 5 banners either. Woodson missed it by a year, and Fife missed it by one game. I’d say that’s motivation for them as well.

If that were my objective, my first call would be the head coach at the University of Hawaii.
