  1. Yes, agree that, fair or not,  KL’s 5 star rating is a big reason people had such high expectations for him. The recruiting services are not, of course, perfect but the odds (not a guarantee) are high that a 5 star player comes out of the gate being productive. According to 247 we have landed 10 five stars since 2000. One of them is Lander and one is incoming JHS (who is listed as a CG but is actually playing PG this season).

The other 8 five stars are:Eric Gordon, Romeo, DJ White, Cody Zeller, James Blackmon, Yogi, Noah Vonieh, Thomas Bryant all of whom were heavy contributors their freshmen years. Vonieh started all but one game his freshman year while the other 7 started every game as freshmen.  It’s not KL’s fault that he was rated too highly but it is a reason that fans had high expectations.

On a positive note Franklin is very consistent. He has now played 12 games, rather than 10, and went a combined 2-10 from 3 in those two games….a consistent 20%.!

Actually, he seemed like a good kid and I’m not rooting for him to fail. He must really be pressing as he has missed all of his 3 points attempts in 6 games and had three others in which he was 1-7 in each of the three games (ie 3-21). I didn’t think he would be lights out but would have guessed he would shoot at least  35% or so in Tony’s system (he was 42% from 3 in his last IU season).

Its going to be interesting.  With NIL and our staff, each one could be convinced to stay and it actually be in their best interest.

    RE: NIL $$.

It’s really none of our business, and we may never know the answer, but I would be interested to know if the players are making NIL cash that could possibly sway them to stay.  I have no idea if our guys are barely making pizza money or if they are hauling in meaningful (10’s of thousands) cash.

    RE Lander:

Many different opinions in regards to his playing time etc but I don’t think there is any doubt that he is the all-time IU leader in the “forum posts per minutes played” category.

There really isn't such a thing anymore. Kids like that go straight to the G-League or other professional leagues now. Don't get me wrong....some kids come in and only play a year but that is mostly because they exceed expectations...the Cousins/Walls/Zions of the world won't be coming to college anymore. With the transfer portal one year might be all many teams get with these kids....seeing as so many transfer regardless of playing time etc.

A few go directly from high school to pro ( 3 of the top 25 players this year) but the current NBADRAFT.NET mock draft  is projecting that 15 of the top 20 NBA picks will be current freshmen. The breakdown of the projected 2022 top 20 picks is 15 freshmen, 4 sophomores and 1 international. One and done is still alive and well.

This game is important in that IU needs to play a clean game. It can't be one of those throw it all over the place, look disinterested, still win by 15+ and think everything is ok. I hope CMW has really pushed them this week.

I'd also like to see Lander get some time over the next two games. If he can't get in against NKU or UNC Ashville it's difficult to see him playing in conference games barring an injury.

Also watching to see if CMW only plays about 7 - 8 guys again. I know Bates was not available for the ND game but of late against the better teams he has limited the minutes for some. Even in 2OT with Cuse he only played eight guys 10 or more minutes with JG getting four and Durr getting five.

I agree with wanting to see a number of guys getting more playing time against a team like NKU and hope we play, as you said, a clean game.

That being said, overall I don’t think the number of minutes or players Woody has played has been bad/unusual.  It’s true that we played 8 guys 10+ minutes against Syracuse but Syracuse only played 7 guys 10+.  Against ND IU played 7 guys 10+ minutes (with Galloway and Bates both out) and so did ND.  When UK played ND they played 6 guys 10+, and one that played eight, while ND played 7 guys 10+.  The Zags beat TT by 15 the other night and 7 guys got 10+ minutes for the Zags while TT had 8.   Most teams do not provide meaningful minutes to 9-10+ players.

I am not expecting Johnson to he back next year.

    Do you have any info?

I am not disputing you but rather I just don’t know which of the “elders” are planning on returning among Race, Rob, Stewart, Kopp and X.
Who knows? For some of them their decision might hinge on how good or bad the rest of the season goes.

I think if Lander is patient and really works hard this off season I can see him starting at pg next year.  I see a 3 guard lineup of Lander, Bates and JHS

JHS is listed as a combo guard, by the recruiting services, but apparently is playing primarily PG this year. If he comes in as a PG, and X returns, minutes could be a challenge for KL again next year. Who knows what will happen as there are a lot of variables (including KL possibly working his way into the rotation).

The amount of announcers that IU fans don't like confuses the heck out of me haha

    I agree except……..

when  Walton did a 20 friggn minute interview with Bruce Hornsby, on a split screen, while our game was being played.  I couldn’t believe ESPN allowed that interview to drone on during the middle of a game.

This is a sneaky important game. Particularly for the psyche of the fan base.

    Agreed.

If we are on the bubble at year end it would be good to have a win vs ND.

I do not want us to be in the “bubble” discussion with an out of conference win against St John’s vs. losses against Syracuse and ND.

But.. this is when you take one of those players. Those top 16-18 recruits (hoping you get Bailey) are very good and great for Indiana standards. This is when you take one of those specialty guys (a burner, a huge T but is raw, etc). Just my opinion. You are spot on in the things you've said though.

Going back to the 2010 or so era Perry would have been one of our top recruits. A few weeks ago I looked at one of those years and only 4 of the recruits in that class even had a national ranking (and we were below schools like Troy).

That’s a good point. I haven’t really been tallying all the guys, by position, that have left. I partially asked because offering our lowest rated recruit at the last minute, and flipping him from a MAC school, kind of reminded me of the bad old days and/or I thought we were maybe losing Cooper.

That being said, you can’t teach speed and I’m not saying I think he will flop because of his offers/ranking. We needed separation and speed this year and hopefully he can help provide that. To be clear, I’m not complaining as this looks like a great class and I can’t believe what the staff accomplished after such a disappointing year.

  12. We gave Perry a very late offer, on December 13th, and he flips to us from Central Michigan. It also sounds like we are close to adding another receiver. We have already signed another speed demon, Lucas, and also Camper and Cooper is verbally committed.

Do we need this many receivers or does the staff think Cooper is going to fly the coop?

I'm not sure what is so surprising? Do any mock drafts have TJD as a 1st round pick?

I'd guess more mock drafts would have him going undrafted vs having him as a 1st round pick.

He's still an undersized big with a questionable right hand and very little perimeter game. None of that has really changed.

Agree about the right hand and perimeter being an issue.

NBAdraft.net, for what it’s worth, has TJD as the last pick in the 1st round going to Golden State.  A month or so ago he was in the 20 or so range rather the present 30th.
