Scott, I can manipulate stats as well.  From 1966 to 1977, there's no NCAA tournament record at all.  Then three good years, then three bad years when K started there.  From 1971 to 1977, Duke didn't even appear in the national rankings.  There was a stretch from 1951 to 1971 when they were a top-20 team.  Then from 1971 until coach K got rolling in 1983, they literally had three good seasons.  Maybe saying they weren't crap before coach K is a bit of hyperbole, but there level of success was much much higher in K's reign than before and prior to K, they had more than one extended period when they went through a desert of underperformance.  If you look at the long-term record, you can draw a lot of parallels between IU and Duke, especially looking at each school before Knight/Coach K arrived.  The only difference being, IU won national championships before Knight.

Also, in case you wonder, I won't address any more comments in the thread of a player who is now dead to me.

Duke was kind of like Wisconsin before K. Timeline is different but similar in view.

The question is, does he reach the ceiling in college or pro ball. Would much rather have a guy who is polished over one who has “potential.”

Absolutely. Flory may become a Hanner type. Doubt it. Seems more dialed in. He’s a two year max guy(of course). Will be interesting seeing him in college.

My question is why does it matter if he’s going to OTE over a place like LaLu or Montverde? It’s smart to go to a place where he can earn some money. Ivey didn’t have that choice because NIL wasn’t available yet. Ivey went to LaLu which is one of the best prep schools in the country for basketball. He was absolutely on the radar. Both Ivey and Catchings realize going away to live on their own can help prepare them for the rigors of college. Catchings fortunately can make money while doing it too. Both Ivey and Catchings come from significant basketball families who know what the recruiting process entails and it makes sense why they trusted Painter.

OTE is an NBA training school first. They mirror it. A private school second. The only similarities is they play basketball. Those private schools are like prep for college vs prep for the league. Ivy was a fringe 4 star. He wasn’t close to what Catchings is. Ivey was a Purdue lock. Catchings probably not.

    Okay? Care to elaborate?

Totally different scenario. Kanon has signaled he’s not sure. My take is he’s going to keep his options open. If he was headed to a private school like montverde imho he would probably go to college. Plus Katchings is a 5* riser. He’s going to maximize his earnings potential. Ivey at this point wasn’t on the radar or close to a 5*.

The only reason this guy is getting any run is because he’s a S. Indiana guy and a lot of you live down there. Had he been from anywhere north of Indianapolis, no one would care. He is getting too much attention for a guy who is going to play somewhere other than Bloomington. He would have never made it in CMW’s program, given the level of talent that is being recruited. He would have been a prototypical CAM recruit. He disappeared in the second half of the championship game v Blackhawk Christian and certainly did not look like an elite player.

And, what has not been mentioned at all in this thread is the home life he comes from. Have to wonder what of his dad’s problems have affected him. Have to believe that his dad had some impact that could be a negative factor for the kid

Off topic but you could say the same sort of thing about Luke Brown.  It’s insane the amount of attention/hype he got.

  6. The IU media school influence is killer. They do great work on these media releases. This is a big plus in our favor. IU has fully embraced(so far) the modern look. Not to over the top to be campy but fun style. Spend a little and combine forces. (As an example) While I was working at IU I was involved in a crash study. It was cutting edge in that it used the service side to install the equipment. We were the #1 site. The reason was we used the right people for the job. It worked seamlessly. Fun, interesting project. It was the largest study of its kind.
