More of a general question/comment about transfer portal. Did the NCAA ever think about the ramifications of granting everyone an extra year of eligibility and the chaos that would create? Here's my example. Good friend of mine has a son who plays college football. When they chose the school for him it was because depth chart at TE was 2 seniors meaning his son would wait his turn as a freshman (this year)knowing they would be gone and playing time would be there next year.

Now both seniors are going to return to get Masters and my friends kid will be using his 2nd year of eligibility next year mostly not playing again. They are looking into transferring now. Just curious what people think about extra year for everyone.

As in most cases, no. They don't think, they react.

I have gotten behind Crean and Archie as they came in. I also gave them the benefit of the doubt for years.  At the end of the day, Crean ended up being a different coach than I expected and I overestimated Archie at this time and place.  But I was optimistic on both because I’m a fan and what is the point otherwise?

But I have to say, I’m on another level of optimistic this time as compared with the last two.  Woodson has been impressive in his approach. I believe he’s working hard already based on the film he’s already broken down and all his meetings with players and coaches.  He’s got the right priorities.  But it’s more than that.  We have an AD with a background in sports now.  We have hired people like Matta and Fife which gives us a very smart and talented brain trust.  So this feels different. Maybe it’s in part that we were burned and beaten around a bit and then we had Brad calling himself a Masshole.

So it turned out ok and we are kind of exhaling. But, in the end, I think we are finally on the right track.  Will it materialize in recruiting and on the court?  That remains to be seen but I’m unusually optimistic this time.

And if it goes well, we have Fife in waiting and we will never have to mention Brad’s name again in a coaching search other than to laugh at the past. I always thought Brad was beyond reproach and an impeccable character. But that Masshole thing was so abnormal and bizarre, it’s nice to see he can crack too and he’s human.  But I can’t see his name coming up again, which will be a huge plus.

Yeah, Boston is a tough sports town. I think Stevens sensed he’d gone overboard on his praise of Indiana and felt that he had to send a message to the Massholes that he’s one of them. Especially in a down year. But I agree, hopefully that ship’s sailed for good

Tamar Bates wants to play for a black coach after all the racial tension. He decommitted from Texas after shaka moved on I think. Should Woody and Hunter give him a call. I suspect Shaka may still get him but who knows.

I could see him playing for Counzo Martin at Mizzou. He’s from KC

That would be amazing if it happens. 2 options for next HC some day.

Edit: Wouldn't that be a demotion for Roberts?

Yes, however he is unlikely to keep his assistant position from what I have heard. DOBO would allow him to stay in Bloomington if that’s what he wants/may be his best current offer (if it’s even on the table).

That would be surprising if Roberts accepted DOBO. He was associate head coach at UNC Greensboro and it was speculated that he would replace Wes Miller, should WM get another gig.

Electric. I had a Master built electric for about 5 years, and it gave up the ghost on the day before Thanksgiving. My wife bought this one for me for Christmas.

That looks sweet. Best part of the electrics is being able to just set a temp and they maintain a constant level. Enjoy the turkey!

  6. Smoked an Easter ham this AM on my Masterbuilt electric smoker. I've smoked ham on a Weber charcoal grill and they've been great, but this one was even better. Very moist.

Smoked at 250 degrees until an internal temp of 140 (ham was already smoked, so this was double-smoking). Used apple wood chips for first two hours and then stopped the smoke. Ham was only 6 pounds and was done in 3 hours.

Put water, apple cider vinegar and pineapple juice in the drip pan and basted ham with drippings every hour. When internal temp was 130, glazed with a pre-mixed packet of ham glaze to which I added some honey. Continued to heat to 140.

Not a great trade,  I was not that impressed with Brooks when I saw him in high school.  Also is this guy anyone who you should listen to.  If he is not in the portal IU can't talk to him but I guess TJD could.  Also some players can't play for Cal and some has flourished once they transferred like Jurang at UCLA

Brooks was UK’s leading rebounder at nearly 7/game, playing only 23 minutes. When I saw UK this year, he seemed to be the only guy giving consistent effort. Not a good perimeter shooter, though

I like the idea of bringing Isaiah Thomas on board as an assistant coach. He has connections throughout the Midwest and grew up in Chicago. He still connects well with players, including the younger generation. He carries a marquee name and has one at the highest levels.

That pretty well sums up my thoughts from reading that article.

The author does say at the end that he's a "pretty fair coach" but most of the time seemed to have a grudge.

From what Woodson has said so far it seems like he's more open to input and I hope he is. Part of the reason I got over the disappointment of this hire was that with hiring Matta and the possibility Brown it looked like we might have a coach that would check his ego at the door and turn to others for advise to help him win. This article has me doubting that but that was also over a decade ago and his first HC job so maybe he has learned and adjusted his approach in that time.

At the press conference, Woody said his ego was in check and that he's always listened to great basketball minds, specifically describing Matta in that way. Will take him at his word until he proves otherwise.
