I met Larry Brown once in my back yard. I lived in Hilton Head Island, SC for 16 years when I worked on the PGA Tour. A golf cart was riding around in my yard so i went out to say i didnt mind if they walked around looking for their ball but keep the cart behind the stakes. It was Larry Brown. He was playing with Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun.

So did you tell them to keep the cart behind the stakes?

Was that the Onion?   The truth is none of us has any idea whether Woodson will work out.   I also think that article was complete stupidity.  Who the hell is Wolkein? I suspect he’s extremely young the way he talks about a 63 year old.    His reasoning ability is very low level.  Girlfriend issues.  Lol.  He has no idea what he’s talking about.  If anything, Woody is a great mentor.  Listen to his players.  This is an author with very poor reasoning abilities.  Journalism majors should be forced to study math, science, philosophy, etc.  It would really help with their reasoning.

Honestly, it feels like IU is mimicking the (thus far) highly successful Michigan basketball model.  The only real difference I see is (1) Howard is younger and (2) Woodson is more experienced as a coach.  Beyond that, it appears IU is attempting to fill in Woodson's perceived weaknesses with highly qualifies assistants and support people, much like Michigan did.  How much of that is the A.D. vs Howard or Woodson making the call here is up for debate.

No, it's not an identical road map, but it looks fairly similar from my outsider view.

Too bad we don't have their roster...  :coffee:

Larry Brown?? I mean the basketball IQ of this setup is through the roof but who is going to do the grunt work....who is getting out there and recruiting these kids. Who is getting dirty on the court and working one on one. This staff seems like Dolson just bought an ex nba GMs old Blackberry from the 90s in a garage sale and started calling the first names in it. Guess you just throw spaghetti and see what sticks.

One of my mentors always said, when you are called to a meeting, grab someone younger to take with you, because whoever leaves a meeting with the lowest title will do all the work

i like the Matta part a lot, but it does seem a little weird that e is needed if Woodson is so great.  i don't think Matta would have been needed for Beard, Musselman, Oats, Drew, Altman, etc.  also, Penny is a bad example.  he is a terrible coach and already got in trouble for breaking the rules.  still want to see Howard down the road.  he has Martelli and inherited a great situation.

My reading of Dolson’s comments is that Matta is there to assist Dolson as much as Woodson

I don't understand the whole "I have to see results" crowd. The most obvious aspect of this whole thing is that he has to win... and sooner, rather than later. None of that is ground breaking stuff. But some of you are already halfway out the door. Just doesn't make sense to me.

We've all endured the last 20 years together. It costs no more to have a positive outlook.

I think so many are just jaded due to the results since the mid-90s, some self-inflicted and some bad luck. How many times can you ask people to touch the hot stove before they are hesitant to buy into what's being sold? This isn't unique to the IU fan base, it's true for the fans of all sports franchises that underachieve and have experienced coaching turnover. The honeymoon period gets shorter each time and fans won't get emotionally invested until they start to see results.

I like Mike Woodson. I hope he rebuilds the program and has it in great shape when he's ready to hand it over to a successor. But it's a huge leap of faith for the University and it's fan base.

I would feel better if I'd had more confidence in Dolson. I believe that either Kraft or Reynolds would have been the better hire, based on their greater experience. I honestly believe either could have been hired and Dolson would have probably stayed in his prior role, if that's what they wanted.

Dolson is a new, inexperienced AD, who was making his first coaching search/hire. I'm convinced he was played by Stevens' camp and was left without a solid Plan B. He may have salvaged the situation (UCLA got lucky with Cronin and Wisky got lucky with Bo Ryan), but no one can reasonably look at this as offering long-term stability to a program that badly needs it.

Regarding players.  I hope Franklin and Lander stay.  But I’d add Geronimo. I recall someone here mentioned his mom thought IU is far from home. But I think he can absolutely thrive with Woodson.   Coach said he wanted defenders who can cover multiple positions.  Geronimo is ideal for that. Also, he is putting a premium on shooting.  Well Jordan squares up and has a nice shot.  I think he can take off under Woody.

    Agree on Geronimo, as well

Switching on defense and versatile defenders where you get positionless.

Offense.  Move the ball.  Premium on shooting.  3 pt shot is key.  You can have a different role on O if you aren’t a shooter.   He’s going to want shooters  and taking advantage of the 3 ball.  But don’t shoot if you aren’t a shooter.  He said in NY they led in 3 point shooting and had eight guys in their rotation who could shoot.

    What’s not to like?

If I'm Franklin, Stewart and Hunter, I leaned forward in my chair. They have the size (quickness for Hunter is a question) to play switching defense and the shooting ability from 3.

Will if he adds players and wins

Of course, but that’s not likely to happen in year one. An apathetic fan base needed a boost until then and it didn’t happen.

When you hire a 63 year old coach, it’s like a lame duck politician. Fans are already thinking about the next hire/succession plan.

I love Woody. I was at IU at the end of his college career. But this is a caretaker hire. It advertises to the basketball world that IU isn’t a desirable job. Which I don’t believe if we had competent leadership.

I really hate feeling this way.

I'm actually pretty excited. Again...it's not Stevens or Beard or whomever....but college hoops has changed plenty. Howard was brought back but they succeeded because of Martelli too. This combo approach has shown it can work and I'm at the very least going to give it a go.

And they were loaded with returning talent.

Before we fired Archie, who I was ready to see go, I said there were scenarios that I thought it would've made more sense to keep Archie.

This is one of those scenarios. I hope I'm wrong, but I'd have much preferred one more year of Archie to this.

Totally agree. Could have saved the donor $7M to end up in the same place except Woodson would be 64

  12. There's also the counter-factual that we'll never know. How many players would have entered the transfer portal if Archie had been retained. I'm certain Durham would have and it sounds as though Race may have as well (interpreting RP's comments). No idea about the others. These guys can't help but see J Smith's experience. I'm sure some have remained in contact with him.

Not sure if someone wants to fire up a transfer thread but Marcus Carr from Minnesota just entered transfer portal.

Maybe he’ll follow Little Ricky to New Mexico. Speaking of which, I want whatever their AD is having... WTH?

“Richard Pitino is a proven winner with a track record of success on the court, including deep tournament runs and wins over nationally ranked programs, as well as proven success off the court by creating a tremendous student-athlete experience and supporting them as they earn their degrees," New Mexico athletics director Eddie Nuñez said in a statement announcing the move.
