Gunn needs to get Bates’ minutes. He’s much better on both ends of the floor. I REALLY want Bates to succeed and I know it’s still early but based on the small sample size, I just don’t see it. Would rather let Gunn start getting that experience

The thing with Bates is that he was so highly ranked and those guys are expected to have an immediate impact. I know it's tougher coming into a situation where no one on the team is familiar and comfortable in the offense since this is basically the first year for it and TJD is the focus. It's just aggravating when you look at guys that were ranked near him, like Branham (OH St), Tyrese Hunter (IA St, Tx), Bryce Hopkins (Ky, Providence) and Sallis (Gonzaga) to a lesser extent.  I hope he can put it together soon and become another legitimate scoring option.

I’ve noticed some of the same things you have. This will be their first game against a non mid major opponent and their first road game. I think with SSAH rocking, this sets up for a potential 15 point win for us.

UNC just has to beat Portland and they get the winner of Iowa State/Villanova. The other bracket has UConn/Oregon and Alabama/Michigan State.  Win or lose, they'll play some decent competition on a neutral court.  I think they'll be highly motivated at IU and I wouldn't expect them to play with the same intensity as they did their early season opponents.

If I didn’t know any better I’d assume this was a typo. How does s player with his experience average 22 minutes per game and have just one made basket with zero FT attempts? I’ve never seen a stat line like this in my life.

Especially against 4 cupcakes.  He scored over 2,000 points in HS and averaged 29 points his senior year.  That concussion and/or Archie must have really messed him up. I think he would have been better off going to an established program like Iowa, Virginia or Purdue, instead of the disfunctional mess that IU was at the time.

Lots of hoops to not admit Purdue got a damn good player.

Not really... I do think 3 games does not a college career make...

If he turns out to be "damn good" I'll have no trouble admitting it...

I think he's shown he's good, especially in Purdue's system with the dominant big. I thought I remembered reading that CMW had to be sold on Cupps.  I'm fine with going after guys like JHS and if he leaves after this year, like I expect him to, go get another like him or bring in a veteran from the portal. Apparently CMW turned away a couple of possible transfers, which was fine for this year. There may be several openings for next year and hopefully the portal will fill any needs that new recruits can't.  I wanted Smith when Archie was coach but I'm fine with trusting CMW to assemble the roster as he sees fit.

DD had Fife on his show:

    1.  Laughed at the idea Braden Smith was a difference maker

    2.  CMW could have added a couple high level transfers but stayed loyal to guys on the team

    3.  Ready to hang banner #6

i wonder if he believes it or just does it so he can rip them later

Dan said that for Purdue to be good, they need more production from their wings.  He specifically mentioned that Newman, Morton and TKR need to produce. And also Gillis.  I didn't take it as a shot at Smith as much as those other guys need to score for Purdue to be good post season-wise.  Purdue is going to be good in the Big10, it's just that Smith won't be a difference maker against teams they'll face in the NCAA tourney.

I'm with you, but it brings up the age old question, is one season of JHS better than four seasons of Smith?  I'd disagree with anyone who says that A is clearly better than B.

I like Smith but you also have to consider who you bring in after JHS.  Dakich, fwiw, said yesterday he was told basically there was a couple of really good transfers that wanted to come to IU but Woodson wouldn't crean anyone.

Again.. this is an IU forum. He was not good enough for high D-1 competition. Don’t know why you feel the need to keep pushing him on here.
If they don’t play for IU, where’s the relevance?

The title of this thread is specifically college basketball that is NOT IU. If you're only here for IU related talk, then it's easy to disregard this thread.

Wow! NCAA needs to rethink the transfer rules. He would of fit right in with Archie. Sounds like he can't shoot a lick!

His last xfer was to be closer to home after a couple of relatives had died and his dad and grandma had serious health issues.
