Banks is already signed for starters. Ya just got Indiana in the door with his connections. Woody and the rest of the staff sold them on the school.

Ya didn't bring Jabari Parker to IU, I think he wouldn't jump in with Banks, etc.  Anyhow, those kids seem all in to IU.

I highly doubt all these programs only have one key recruiter. On the current staff Fife, Hunter and Ya are all recruiting.

I don’t think there are college assistants that don't recruit.

I agree with that, but what I'm saying is that every coach is a recruiter including your recruiting director.  Heck, when Dan Dakitch was Director of Basketball, he was the one giving tours to Zeller on campus and it was said his connections had them talking.

You need a coach that is also going to run practices when the head coach is out recruiting.

I wouldn't it past that Woodson and Whittman can go into any state with a NBA team and or G team and pull a connection out.  It's who wants to work for it.  I think that is the assumption that Ya is the one spending most of his time recruiting.

I think Fife and Hunter have been the main leads??  The two Georgia kids have been Ya's lead?

Recruiting is about connections and who can make the phone call.  And other stuff that IU is not known for.

That's true. I guess I was thinking him having more access to players in practice for development, but you bring up a good point on recruiting.

Only need one key recruiter.  Randy has plenty of connections as well across the country.

Look at the way both coaches were received by the fan base, IU fan base did what it typically does, eat their own. "Woodson has never coached in college, too old, how is he going to recruit."

Louisville looks at Payne as a savior.  He is a recruiter more than having a coaching resume.  He already has connections to the top players.  Who cares if he can coach at a high level.

Good point; however, I would not say all.  I know most in my circle are pumped and have been pumped.  Its a few people with an agenda and they keep posting, tweeting, etc.  Best thing these message boards can do is delete threads with an agenda.

I think the kids don't care.  They want exposure, a chance at the NBA and NIL. IU has all that if not are at the top with all except NIL. Hopefully, we can raise the game in the NIL area that some other programs are getting huge support in.

He glides, and has legit interest in IU and IU has real interest in him according to the other site.  If we take another 22 high school kid he would be mostly likely.

Of course that was before Julian Philips re-opened his recruitment, but I would look for Louisville to gobble up the remaining 5 star players now.

Wouldn't IU have the same playbook as Payne with Coache Woodson and the same connections?

Agree, though I'd add that both schools typically have multiple guys that can break you down off the dribble.

Watching Baylor now, and most possessions there isn't even a player inside the 3pt line. They're so spread out and because they're so skilled the defense has to respect it.

Love the speed both UNC and Baylor are playing.  Got to think coach wants this speed.  There is a different degree of athletes on the floor.

There several teams I watch the last few years and I just think that I wish IU could recruit and play like these teams.

This goes further back then last year, so I don't mean to cherry pick recent national title winners, but I just love the type of players Baylor and Villanova recruit and the style they play.

Just tough players, skilled and aggressive guards, 3 & D wings with length, and long, athletic bigs that rim run offensively, can play the PnR and are tough defensively.

Both programs play tough D and play with pace offensively.

To add to what you are saying....those teams have kids thay can shoot from anywhere on the floor and don't need to toe the line.  Maybe Green was our last threat for something like that?

They stretch the floor opening up the lanes and have at least 1 player who can break you off the dribble.  It only take 1, like what we see with Wisconsin.  Maybe the 3 kids we are bringing in next year have this game?  Bates shows some of that potential and just needs to add strength.

    That's a great question

Little of both. I would anticipate more than 1 Olympic Gold medalist

Would love more specifics of what you are hearing.  What type of roles can they take on based on NCAA?  Or, just working out there? Good stuff!

If a player isn’t bought in do want him to stay?

judging by RabJohn comments on JMV show might be a few the coach’s ask to leave

RabJohns, I like listening to; however he walks the tight rope of fan and reporter.  No doubt he has inside info, but he also speculates.  He was the reporter in the press conference that said the Illinois win guaranteed the big dance.  We have learned, yes they were in, but it was as thin of rope as possible, with some wear and tear.

My speculation is that this staff was put together by Dolson, Matta and Woodson.  Woodson had a year to learn and evaluate and now the ball is in his court to make the necessary changes.  There were a ton of Archie hires still on staff.  They might of become Woodson people now, or they served the purpose of bridging the gap.  Todays coaching world there is movement as thr objective is to become a head coach.

Its going to be fun to see how things shake out.  One thing for sure is that recruiting is the number priority.  My humble opinion is that with NBA influence we have the best basketball minds already there and I bet more are going to be added at some point.

I would love to see "money" in a player development role and not just an adviser.  Would love the influence of Whittman and other all-in Hoosiers who have had the top gigs in the world.

I also really appreciate all the work Hunter, Ya and Fife (an all in Hoosier) have done.  They are great.  Don't know much about Sanders, Matta roles.  Tough decisions by all stakeholders and it will be interesting to see how things shake out.

Future of IU basketball has never been brighter since my kids have been born.

Just goes to show that the vast majority of rumors out there are pure 🐎💩.

There could be speculation about every D1 player every year.  Its a grind!  Can you imagine social media during the Knight years?  Super pumped about Bates and JG....keep them coming!

I think CMW can keep this team at a high level defensively.

The big question mark is where do we get offense from when we will likely lose 1 or both of our top 2 scorers on a team that was already offensively challenged.   Plus we have no one on the outside that is a proven consistent scorer at all levels.

The offense will adapt.  Coach in press conferences has said, he played a 4 out 5 out in the NBA, pick and roll, high pace.  Here there strength was TJD and they had to go inside out, without movement around the permiter with hope to space it for him.  They are all aware of the limitations at wing.   This is not the offense coach wants, but had to go to based off personal.

His situation certainly could be comparable to Franklin. Let's hope not.

Bates is a young freshman.  People forget that he has gone through a ton this year.  It was reported he will be a father (from reports on this board), he lost a close family member this year as well.

His best basketball days are ahead of him!  He was on a team made up of Seniors.  I am pretty sure it was understood that he is part of the future.  And, I am pretty sure there are on the court, off of court where attention was needed.  On the court, physical defense.

I have a feeling Bates is going to be on the wing and we are going to love watching him play.

I’m not 100% that they are close, it’s something I’ve seen before

EDIT: They were assistant coaches for Oregon in only 2009-2010

Payne was Ya's mentor and helped him get the gig with Woodson.  Doesn't mean he will jump ship.  Probably will be extended and offer, but seems like Ya likes being here.  Like many decisions might come down to $$$$.  Then again, Payne and Woodson are close.  We shall see.  There are plenty of coaches who recruit.  And, Banks is already signed.

I understand that, but we still didn’t cover them and left them wide open.

There we’re absolutely questionable and even bad calls both ways, but we left their studs wide open in crunch time and they made shots. It’s a bummer and we had a phenomenal run in Indy, but that was far and away the most fair whistle we’ve gotten since at least the Purdue game.

Yes, those were two crucial plays.  I took what you wrote as if the kids were instructed to camp it in.  They missed coverages- huge.  Learn and move on.  Get PS his confidence back, little reset and ride this in March.

The way this team plays and are in it to the end is amazing.  Making 3-5 3's in this day in age and be in it.  The foundation is set.   Super excited for the future and the present.

Or we could have covered their shooters we left wide open in those minutes.

Theres almost no way refs aren’t going to call something when two guys end up on the ground on a shot attempt. A no call wasn’t going to happen there.

Those were miscommunications on screens.  Players and coached talked about it after.  They were covering them.  They slipped, with communication and Iowa made them.

Our better offensive play in recent games has coincided with not just Kopp hitting some shots, but running him to the corner more than Race and looking for his shot there.  He hits a good chunk of them and we are stretching the court better.  This is a much better deployment of Miller.  He can help us.  He’s not quick but he works on D and he has decent length.

Right now, X is not good. He’s playing at an elite level.  Changing speeds so the defender doesn’t know what’s going on, passing, shooting, getting downhill.   He’s always had the motor and tough nosed defense.  Trayce has flat out erupted and solved some things that were giving him trouble.  We’ve got some bench guys playing well.

If Stewart can rediscover his shot, holy smokes, we can really turn it on.

X is the most improved player in season that I can remember.  TJD got into a slump, and the two arch enemies that got him in that slump he owned.  Thats character that is an all time great hoosier.

It was interesting when the sideline reporter said coach was telling his shortened lineup don't waist energy on offense.  I agree with this strategy and two better communications on screens and that one bucket counting.  Different outcome.

Why do we constantly have to see the big commissioner on tv talking about world view and events and changing the world. never used to see any of the past commissioners. Just talk about sports and the game. you fd it up enough already. We seen who you really was in 2020 when you changed the rules to benefit Ohio St. all about the Dollar bill. Make the world a better place. lol

The problem is that the B1G is controlled by the AD's.  The past commissioner was able to control them through years of work.  As soon as Delaney stepped doen, the Ad's and Universities took over with power.

As long as Wisconsin has power in basketball and Iowa/OSU in football we won't see major changes in those sports.

New coaches in the B1G are NBA influenced and want to change the style.  Its the old guard holding on to it.

He was in the IU huddle basically.  Fran is a clown.  It should have been a T, I have seen guys get one for far, far less.  He deserved it for going into the outskirts of the IU huddle.

Warren was at every game, wonder if he has an assessment.  B1G would be so much healthier if they adapt to style of the rest of country.

Now for this T, it should be automatic or coaches will be doing it all the time.  Don't know why rules change based on games.  We saw a replay overturn a possesion this year, where it wasn't allowed.  Its crazy.

I don't know anything about Fife's happiness level at IU but I have noticed it seems Hunter is much more in Woodson's ear during games than either of the other two assistants.  Its not surprising for one coach to be more involved in a game, especially if they have the scout for that game. But after randomly paying attention to the sideline dynamic a lot during the B1G tournament, it was striking just how much more Woodson relied on Hunter for advice in every game than the other two.  Again, probably not relevant to anything relating to Fife, but I just found it

Okay, why this topic has sparked an interest to me is...I don't know, but it has.  While waiting for my daughters to finish dance and not wanting to chat it up with others, I did a little research.

Rumor kind of started from somone on Assembly Call, a fan podcast with little connections to the program.  Somone can correct me there.  It was more I heard...blah, blah, blah.  Then this guy Chris on Btownbanners who is someone that always claims he doesn't really know and says some things as facts that never happens.  He got simple inside info wrong with senior speeches, suspensions, etc.  Then there are people like Jim Coyle who will say, I'm not at practice, but I heard a rumor.  Heard what, from your message board?  Such a silly rumor and if you watch the games you can see the opposite.  And, if you listen to shows, interviews you hear opposite.  I do know a few coaches who visited practices and they talk about a highly engaged staff.  In-fact one thing that stands out is how hands-on Woodson is compared to some other head coaches.  This was a positive.

They were also saying Hunter was upset to - funny.

Yesterday's game Ya was on camera talking it up with a paper covering his face to Woodson.  Fife is always coming over and giving two cents to Woodson from the side of his mouth.  Fife is also always standing with a sheet of paper directing defense.  It seems he is the defense coordinator of sorts.  My guess.

When I was at the Northwesten game, they all were engaged with each other and more importantly the players.  Fife is always in the players ears.  Also Hunter and Fife were always in the refs ears during timeouts.

On camera, during the Ohio State game, you even saw Matta getting in the ears of refs when there was a clock question for time.

Re: the offensive foul on TJD, we’re debating it with multiple angles, slo mo, etc., and we still can’t come to a definitive conclusion on whether it was a good call or not (personally,  i didn’t really have a problem with it). The ref gets one angle in real time. Not sure how anyone can say it was an egregiously bad call considering those circumstances.

Without doubt.  But, it was the time of play, it was during the last few minutes when Iowa started to hit those 3's and caught fire.  It would of changed momentum, apply more pressure on Iowa.  It was the timing of the whole thing and where it was in the game.  When refs traditionally swallow whistles, they made a questionable call, that erased 2 points in the most critical of time.
