How close are you to retirement?

My situation is unique! Most of my adult life my one income has gone to support myself and to some degree others. (my choice) I am of age where I can receive full retirement, but each year I put off my retirement increases 8% I figure if I work to 70 I might survive after that. It's not that I don't have other monies put aside, but they are not enough to support myself and the ones I love!

Besides my personal place as I stated my profession is a dying breed! As we go forward in these trying times, trying to bring back American manufacturing, the knowledge I have available to mentor those if they would just believe is immense.

Besides, I'm not ready to just sit in a rocking chair on the porch and drink sweet tea and lemonade!! Or was that Long Island Tea?

  2. Well Crap, that's a new twist! Early retirement!

Not to be unexpected though! We are going to reopen the plant Monday albeit with guidelines and even physical barriers to keep people separate! Wish us all luck, but this afternoon being in that age group I received an email about early retirement!

Yesterday as I was leaving the plant I joined a conversation with a handful of employees including our President. Our company can financially survive, we have no debt! But this last month as you can expect has been a disaster! Further since our primary customers are resteraunt s, school cafeterias and such our future business is not good in the short run/mid term run.

That being said, the particular problem I fall in has been 40 years in the making, back in the 80's and 90's when corporations sold their souls to ASIA, domestic tooling went into a death spiral! We now have inadequate tool build resources in America, companies no longer exist and the once lucrative trade of tool maker is a dying breed! Along with tooling engineers like me. Nobody is irreplaceable, but if I take early retirement, let's just say this companies latest and greatest product design overhaul goes indefinitely on hold. Young engineers and trades people shun Tool Making, it is really a sad state, because if you don't have tooling you don't build product!

Sorry for the 40 year old festering rant, I already let my boss know I have his back and I'm not retiring unless forced to.

A lot of data/statistics being shared.

One thing to keep in mind is that data can be manipulated to paint the narrative the author wants to tell.

Example.  Info straight from the Indiana Department of Health Website.

    • If I want to make a 45 year old person feel secure, I report that 96.5% of deaths in the state are people over 50.
    • If I want to make a 45 year old person feel worried, I report that over 50% of reported cases in the state are in people aged 30-59.

Or,,,,,,,(not from the website, but a general trend I'm seeing)

    • If I want to focus on how the virus primarily impacts the elderly, I write a headline about dozens of bodies piling up in a New Jersey nursing home.
    • If I want to get the attention of the young to better practice social distancing, I write a headline about a 32 year old mother's harrowing experience with Covid and her passionate plea to others who don't think they can get it.

There are the stories of J Edgar Hoover and his gwiiz charts, where when then direction of the data went the wrong direction, he just turned the chart 90 degrees!

Even pets are starting to protest.

My friend who has friends she talks with weekly in Italy, France and Spain posted awhile ago, which I reposted here. In Spain, things are so repressive that neighbors are renting dogs to walk just so they can get out of their apartment! The dogs have as you see here are done with needlessly walking! Worse, in case you haven't paid attention, Spain about a week ago outlawed dog walking! This is not funny!

The "dude quoted" has some pretty impressive credentials and it is hard to find fault with the Sweden approach as it seems to be working better than many other places. He never said to "shove the elderly in a room to let them die". There is a difference between that and quarantining young healthy people who have minimal  (notice I did not say no) risks. People should be allowed to decide what risks they want to assume for themselves/ their family.

From what I've heard, the young people affected often have other health issues or vape. Any anecdotal evidence to that?

    Reacher,

Not to call you out instead maybe support you, just happened to be the first post I saw when I opened the thread. Love you brother!

That being said, any body (experts or otherwise) that are comparing situations locally with some other situation around the country or worse the world is living the fools life! Things are not the same!!

China', when they locked down they "LOCKED DOWN", no parties on the beach, no I'm going to church and on and on excuses! When they went back to work,(which I'm thankful for as I deal weekly with vendor input from China, including Wuhan) things are still not the same! The facilities in China are usually campuses, where the employees work 7/12 work weeks! They live at work and as much as you and I may find this disgusting, when they go to work they give up their bunk bed to the person coming off shift! Going back to work they were and are still effectively in quarantine!

Concerning Sweden, I don't really know the situation. However, I'll leave you all with this thought. My niece used to live in Fargo, she told me stories of frequent Ice Storms that shut everything down. Wasn't in the national news(go figure) But everyone would gather in the community center with their generators and food, essentially it all became a community block party to the nth degree!

Imagine a whole country that realizes you can't drive by a car with blinkers on, the people involved are now in a life or death situation!

Things are NOT the same as your own reality!

Georgia is the wrong state to be the pace setter for re-opening.  Their numbers simply are not that good.  And, they have not tested that many compared to other states with similar populations.

Don't disagree. But here I am, I'm going back to work Tuesday almost guaranteed! I'm all in for my friends on the line!

Wait, what?Okay, I just scrolled up and am realizing that you live in GA. So it's back to work for everyone there it looks like according to latest reports. I'm not sure this is going to end well. Especially since Kemp didn't even realize the virus could be spread by asymptomatic people.

Do you know for sure that you have to go back and if so, what protections are they taking?

So, our plants last announcement as it has been all through this, they are following Governance. The last scheduled plant opening, ( which has changed weekly, we would open 4/27/2020)!

After today, it is almost guaranteed to open Tuesday the 27th! There will be enhanced protections like everyone gets their temperature checked before entering and there will be a plant wide sterilization prior. There will also be enforcements I'm sure of distancing and safety, but yeah I guarantee we go back to work Tuesday!

It's so uncomfortable. You have to give them your credit card and everything. There's also the endless chitchat. I'm on a four hour trip from hell from NYC to the Eastern Shore, the last thing I want to do is have a conversation with someone and break my driving flow.

Yeah, Yeah, I've been there in states that don't allow you to pump your own gas!  SO WHAT! I used to supervise a department of UAW employees that had three of the top ten seniority employees on a campus of 2700!

What is pissing me off, is that in a thread about Coronavirus, you all have just blown by my announcement that I am now at the forefront of the next battle! I'm going back to work Tuesday as a 66 year old, and I am ecstatic about it! Not for me, but for my friends on the line that must be on life support financially!

Praying it all works out for the best my friends!

  9. Well, I guess I get to move to the front of the NEW battle ground! Georgia just announced that starting Friday they will start reopening the State. Almost positive our plant of formerly 100's of workers will open again Tuesday. Albeit with some safety conditions! I'm in the danger zone being 66, but I'm Okay with it! I'm ecstatic that our line workers are going to be back at work! They are sorely underpaid and have to be on life support financially!

Times will be different after all of this, and as sick as this may sound I'm actually ready to go into the mix of the next battle!

    Whish everyone well!

  10. In case you missed it I had posted this in the Coronavirus Diet thread.

    ____________________________________________________________________________

I was going to put this in the Best of Each state thread, but I liked the explanation in the first slide about the effects of CV on the resteraunt industry with over 100,000 resteraunt' s expected to close permanently?? So I'm putting it here. I know a café we eat at regularly, had adopted a car hop service in order to stay open. If you can get out and safely support the resteraunt' s still open, well use your best judgment!

The best Take Out in each State! All of these were supposedly still open two weeks ago!

OK....if you guys get this I'm retiring from trivia. Who is the only player to play on title winning team in both NBA and MLB? I think there is only 12 players ever to play in both leagues. I'll add one more tidbit after answer. D

  12. I was looking for something else and stumbled upon this bit of NFL history which I am sure even you experts won’t know. One of the most infamous moments in NFL history when a fumbled ball was picked up by a defensive lineman and ran 66 yards into the wrong end zone!

Give me either the running back who fumbled or the wrong way lineman.
