So here are the St Mary's highlights against a team we're very familiar with, Wisconsin, from early in the year at the Maui Classic...in the video @Artesian_86 posted the commentators said St Mary's plays like a Big 10 team, and that seems to be the case... Johnny Davis had a good game for the Badgers (expected) but so did Tyler Wahl whose game is very similar to Race Thompson's... Hoping Race can rebound and have a great game against the Gaels...

Maybe they'll be stale 🙂 I honestly do believe we're going to have success inside and on the dribble drive tonight...Their big man, Tass, looked a little lazy on defense...I'm thinking Trayce has another big game...I also believe XJ will do well on the dribble drive... We just can't fall in love with the 3 pointer coming down the stretch like we did for a while vs Wyoming... I looked at a few of their game highlights, and while they are ok individual defenders, their team defense is excellent...but so is ours...

Maldonado was a tough matchup for us...all of the guys we have that are close to his size he took off the dribble...all of our shorter players, he posted up.. Sure he had 21 points, but he also had the 10 turnovers, many of which our defense forced...he was like a taller Andre Curbelo out there... And Trayce outplaying Ike was pretty much the game (along with JG's stellar game)...Ike reminded me of a slightly more skilled (and definitely slimmer) Trevion Williams...he was gonna get some, but holding him under 20 was big for us...

I always enjoy looking at this sites preseason assessment of teams. The one I'm linking is for the WCC and has some good info on St Mary's... Especially thought this was interesting... "Bennett’s squads are consistently good at 1) defensive rebounding, 2) disallowing 3-point attempts, and 3) making teams beat them with the dribble instead of the pass." The bolded plays right into our hands! 😉 Also... "Bennett’s defensive style is susceptible to rim attack"

I think one area of great improvement for Trayce this year is his decision making with the ball in his hands... Early in the year he turned the ball over at times...in the last 20 games, he's averaged 1.5 TOPG... And I dare say if out outside shooting was a bit better, he'd have a couple of more assists per game...

Tass is from Estonia, which is kinda funny since TASS is the top Russian news agency... I like our chances here...Kuhse will have XJ or Rob bird dogging him, and Tass is the kind of center Trayce has success against... They have 4 guys that average in double figures with no one over 13 ppg, so they're balanced... 2 common opponents, Notre Dame who they beat by 3, and Wisconsin who they lost to by 5, both on a neutral court...

Sometimes I think it's just the sheer will of Mike Woodson that gets this team to win games where we play ugly... There's a new sheriff in town...
