Scottie Davenport is a helluva coach.
I’m quickly becoming a fan they remind me of mid to late 90’s butler teams

I live 15 minutes from Louisville. Obviously, both UL and Bellarmine are from Louisville. Louisville is an ACC school. Bellarmine is in their second season of D1. Yet, I am much more familiar with Bellarmine's roster because I saw a lot of those kids play in high school. I don't know anything about the players on the UL roster.

I saw hopf and suder many times in hs but don’t know the rest …I do know they look disciplined well coached and poised and they are taking it to UL with sound fundamental basketball

Man Davidson game was awesome I know it was 2 ots but 38 points and one assist shy of a triple double !

Hey if we can get Blake’s brother here to IU maybe we could play Wright St. how cool would that be!
I’d take it ! I hear little brother is better I haven’t seen him yet ….brother vs brother would be a great non conference game

Wow, 9 kids from Indiana on the roster. Hopefully Pete Suder from Carmel will get some pt.
That’s what I was gonna watch for ! Hopf played better than I thought last year also

Pretty slim pickings for games tonight. Seton Hall is on FS1, they have Dre and Tae Davis, brothers from Indy. Dre spent two years at Louisville and Tae's recruitment was mentioned here briefly I think. Louisville is on the ACC network at 9 against Bellarmine. Be nice to see UL lose again.
And bellarmine has tons of indiana kids including Kurt hopf from BR

Not trying to defend Alford but someone asked about his volume of shots. So I looked up the stats and posted them
Yep that was me thanks for finding it …the volume has to be taken into account for sure

In his 3 seasons Green was 525 made on 976 attempts
In his last 3 seasons Alford was 727 made on 1396 attempts, including a whopping 508 shots his senior season
Sounds like several factors contributed but the volume alone makes the percentage tougher to maintain that is a BUNCH of shots

Didn’t look at stats, just my humble opinion.
Eyeball test counts ….we have had some of the greats …it feels like we are on a drought

Could it be because his senior year the 3 point line was used? What I wouldn't give to have those type of shooters on the roster, in particular Alford's free throw shooting. There is no excuses for Indiana not being a better free throw shooting team.
Many critical games decided by the line

Interesting that his percentage worsened
I’d be curious to see if his shot load increased …tougher to maintain a high percentage when you increase volume …I’m also assuming as he aged he was drawing more attention from a game plan perspective and had an increased emphasis from the defensive scheme of the opponents

In his 3 years playing varsity at IU, Steve Green shot .466, .556 and .582 for an average of .538
For an apples to apples comparison, in his last 3 years Alford shot .538,.556 and .474 for a .533 average.
Green was every bit the shooter that these more recent guys were.
You’re not wrong …did the state info show attempts for comparison sake ?

Alford was the best, and Hulls a close second.
That’s a fun debate because we have had some amazing pure shooters over the years

Mike Trico was on DD show today and talking about the landscape of college athletics and college basketball. On college basketball he wishes that the start of the season could be done on a bigger stage. It is just like the season started and have no fan fair what so ever. Also the next thing he talked about sounded like me on here for years. Talked about how the product we see on the court of the field is just not as good or entertaining than it use to be. He is not liking how NIL and the transfer portal is ruining college athletics. He sees it spiraling out of control and something needs done before it totally is ruined.
He’s not wrong

Most of his misses were ugly
just rewatched….I think almost all were missed 3’s
46 minutes ago, Purdue7 said:Milwaukee couldn’t throw it in the ocean but they have waves of long athletic perimeter defenders
This is a weird Wednesday when I’m arguing the merits of a Purdue freshman to someone skeptical that has a Purdue tag name ……umw has long athletic defenders relative to their conference but with due respect it’s not the same level as what a big ten guard will go against night in and night out during conference play over a lengthy conference schedule
I expect he will have some ugly shooting games …in high school he had impunity and could shoot him self into a rhythm even on a bad night …he won’t have the same leash especially as a freshman so he will have to learn to adjust in that regard but I think you’ll find he’ll level out to being very consistent from distance and he will contribute in the score column especially when loyer is hitting which will free him up

Like everyone else has been saying, he's got all the intangible point guard skills you typically expect out of a junior/senior. He may end up as Purdue's version of Aaron Craft.
Granted:
- it's one game
- he's a freshman
- it's a long season
Check check and check And he will see more athletic defenses come
big ten time ….if he can get his 3pt shooting to hover around 40% and he can adjust to the bigger quicker defenders he’ll be fine and keep getting better …if not he will be a minutes guy but I’m betting on the former especially over the course of a career

In other non-Purdue related hoops news, South Carolina squeaks by SC State 80-77.
A lot of close games / upsets / near upsets during home openers …usually these are mostly 30 point plus beatings

His vision is a skill that helps him out a ton. His long arms also help him defensively to make up for his lack of height. He's going to be a really good PG for Purude. IU has some good ones on the team and on the way too so it'll be fun to watch moving forward.
Agree 100%

Didn’t get to watch the game but curious what you saw because his stats in the box score didn’t jump out at me
Totally understand, I agree the box score didn’t stand out ….if you can stomach it, which I only did because they weren’t conflicting with a team I like and because I followed kaufman and Furst pretty closely and I was curious to see how Braden would translate his game, watch the next one and pay attention to how he handles the ball/ sees the floor/ controls the flow tempo and offense in general . What I think you’ll be impressed with is that even vastly under sized for big ten play and without hyper athleticism to make up for it he is as poised as a seasoned point guard in his fourth or fifth year and that’s very rare as a 19 year old jumping from high school and into the big ten. All the steaks he racked up aren’t because he is an athlete he just has one of those rare sixth senses for the game he’s the type that will always know where the ball is and where it’s going and he will exploit athleticism on the offensive end and create a lot of open shots …….I expect he will take some lumps when he has poor shooting nights be here has a great shot and he doesn’t lack confidence so I would say think kind of a Jordan bohannon mixed with Aaron craft , he will be an annoyance he will keep his team settled and even though he’s not the best athlete on the floor there are going to be games he sticks some knives in us

Wtf? Let’s just change the thread title to “Toiletmakers love fest.”
Why do you guys continue to encourage someone from our worst rival?
I think this board has become infected by interbreeding
47 minutes ago, rogue3542 said:I'm not going to apologize that my life doesn't revolve around hate for Purdue.
They played tonight and Braden Smith (who's from the town I live in by the way) looks like a really good player, so I posted in the thread dedicated to general discussion of other teams.
Oh Purdue makes me as sick as the next guy ….that being said , when you follow a kid through their high school career and they end up at Purdue …while that clearly shows they lack rational reasoning skills …it doesnt mean you cant still admire the individuals abilities. Furthermore , when IU doesnt offer them AT ALL I think that increases the point exponentially ….he could have been wearing red if we offered him , Wish we had him

He looks really good. Doesn’t look like a freshman at all. That lob/oop to Edey was awesome.
No you guys are gonna love him he will handle the ball and play make like a fifth year senior but 19 years old

Braden Smith is by far Purdue's best player.
He’s gonna be a thorn in our side …he’s not big but he’s a gamer and he sees the floor like few people do
