Big question now: Can we actually beat NW twice (and no overtimes)?

Well, to be fair, who can lift their shoulder over their head?
I think it would have to be extremely dislocated to lift it over their head!

I think Goodman and Dack itch get around a campfire singing some campfire songs and talking about their obsession with IU basketball and how much they hate us.
To be honest, I think both of them like IU and want Indiana to be good.

I know I am the Grand High Lord of Optimism around here, but I'm a little reluctant on this one...
I've watched quite a few Northwestern games these past few years, and Kopp impressed me as a sophomore. He's a good shooter when his confidence is up. When it's not, his shot selection goes south as he tries to shoot himself out of it. He's not a particularly good defender, rebounder, or passer.
Maybe the change in scenery will help, and I also noticed during last season he had a wrap on his off shooting hand and fingers (left) for a good part of the season. Maybe that was some of it...His last 9 games last year he shot 30% overall and 20% from 3 including an 0-11 performance vs Maryland...
If he can regain his confidence, he can help us...I certainly hope so...
He will probably be asked to play a less important role here - might free things up.
I do not think we take this commitment if Woodson was not nearly 100% sure he filled a clear need. It is not like we are trying to fill 5 spots right now. If anything, we start to be in a numbers crunch.

The season cannot get here soon enough.
For us, yes.
For the team, they need to learn a new offense and defense, get to know the new coaching staff, recover from the PTSD associated with the last couple of seasons, and learn how to win.
They need time...

Rob, hunter, Leal or Trey? which goes? Not getting this kid as a walk on.
I don't see it. I think everyone will have an opportunity to play next year (I think with a faster pace, the minutes will be better distributed). Chance to develop and win. Why would anybody leave?

Don't know if this has been posted or not.
In the end it was pretty much what some speculated here: Basically said he liked a slow-methodical system. Does not have to learn a new defense. He did well under the system with Archie and UVA does it better.

He’s technically not eligible for a scholarship so whatever school gets him would figure out a way to let him come for free.. my guess is academic scholarship if he’s smart enough to be a lawyer.
Didn't COVID give "everyone" an additional year of eligibility?

Better half worked days and went to law school at night. Got out for just a tad over $100k in student loans. Nope. Not cheap at all.
Regarding Brunk. Unless he's some Good Will Hunting dude....the amount of reading/studying first year of law school has just doesn't jive with also being a full time hoops player in P5 school.
That makes sense.
If Brunk is clever (and wants to be a lawyer), he will go a place with a good law degree and basketball team for which he is WAY to good so he does not have to work as hard on his training (UPENN or Yale or something - if they offer athletic scholarships).

I didn’t think it was an IU rule I thought it was the law school who has that rule. Also he didn’t count towards the scholarships this year so technically IU had the choice to say we are going to pay for school or we aren’t. Maybe with Covid IU said it wasn’t in the budget to approve him to come another year and he’d have to pay on his own.
It probably is the law school's rule (I do not know anything about the rule itself).
But assuming someone at IU imposes this rule and Brunk wants to have his law degree (partially) paid for with his athletic scholarship, he would have to go somewhere else.
Law school is not cheap...

I hope Leal pans out and I root for all kids who go to IU, but I feel Mangas is a better player that would add more to next year's team. Again, no idea if the interest will turn into an offer, but he is more of a complete player than he is getting credit for. Him winning multiple NAIA player of the year awards is a pretty good indicator he could be a legit contributor on a good D1 team.
My opinion: Mangas coming would be excellent for Leal. The coaching staff will be developing their offense in the next year. Mangas coming could cause them to build a role that Leal could step into the following year.
I do not see any reason that Leal will not pan out. He was only a freshman in a Covid year. My understand from people in the know was that he would be a junior/senior contributor. He seems right on pace to me.

Then Brunk should've just said that he's done with his career but that's not what he said. He's transferring to play somewhere.
I think the point was that Brunk wants to start his law degree and have the first year paid for with a Basketball scholarship and IU said that they did not want him in law school and on the team.
I am not saying that this is the case, just that I believe it is what was being discussed.

He can play a key role at a D1 level, IMO. It will be about fit. Since I have not seen the Woodson offense, it's hard to say if it would work, but IWU plays the 4-out-1 in with a legit big in 7'0 Seth Maxwell. I don't think he's just a Ziesloft or Roth type. Not saying he'd have this impact, but he's got slasher in him like Will Sheehey.
With the new transfer rules, it could be a nice tradition going forward to give a senior/grad transfer player that grew up an IU fan a year on the team. Someone with a particular skill that can help us and will be happy to play his part.

Exactly, as fans we tend to parse and read into every little statement. Fife was making a joke at his own expense. There isn't much to read into here imo
+1
I felt it was more a "not much I could have done there". If anything, the Brunk situation might have fallen into the "other people in his ear" part of the discussion (although I do not believe that was explicitly about Brunk).

This is mostly accurate, but it's just IU or overseas. If IU offers, he will be there. If not, he'll go abroad. IWU is not Big Ten, but they play great comp and have had several D1 transfers on their team, including Johnny Marlin from IU and Evan Maxwell from Kansas - and Mangas has always been the star. IU has talked to his coaches (Tonagel) but I am not sure how interested they are.
Speculating, but our interest may depend on who else we might get from the portal.
One year from a shooter is more interesting than banking the scholarship.

i'm feeling better about the hire for sure, but i think we all know that being a great player doesn't guarantee coaching success. he was definitely a great player. we'll see what kind of coach he is.
Probably the same kind of coach he was in the NBA: focused on player development.

Bryce Thompson, 5-star shooting guard from Kansas, has entered the portal.
I hope we at least kick the tires on this one. If he is interested, healthy, and a cultural fit, a player like that would really change our ceiling next year.

With Brunk gone IU really needs to focus inside. They should be going after John Harrar. He's not a giant but at 6'8 230 or more he's one of the physically strongest players in the conference. Archie mentioned it last season. Nothing over special about his game but at least he can hold his ground and he average 8 pts and 8 reb last season for Penn State.
I loved Harrar's game, but I am not sure he fits what we want to do going forward. Fit is the most important factor.

I noticed that as well. I think it may have been because Durham was leaving no matter what while Franklin considered staying but ultimately left. So, in a sense, he lost Franklin but not Durham. That's how I took it, at least.
Plus Durham had already graduated and played 4 full years.

Out of curiosity, why does academic integrity matter to you?
To quote a commercial: most of the players will be turning pro in something other than basketball...
Whether they appreciate at first or not, we owe them an education.

This one I could get behind. That said I do get the feeling its an nba guy that is waiting on the season to finish up and to weight there options and so Mike is handling the duties for now. Just a guess.
I am ok with this.

If you are pushing the NBA and player Development for the NBA, it better be an NBA guy. Someone besides CMW that can walk into a home and talk NBA. Dane and Hunter have college covered.
For anyone who follows the Pacers better than I do, what does Calbert do there?

If he does not like IU, then his strategy is bad. I think the publicity is good for us.
Edit: Dakich definitely wants IU to be good... he just also want Alford as the head coach.
