The other night I went out to take a walk around the block and ran into about 50-75 people partying in front of the bodega on the corner (the street is closed down). Unfortunately, only about half of the people were wearing masks.

An then there's this...

Astoria, Queens street party

I get that people want to blow off steam after a really hard several months, but damn.

Yeah I've noticed that here.  We were going to take the kids to the playground this morning for the first time this year but when we got there it was packed and far less than half of the adults were wearing masks.  We left.

Sad that you  had to leave.  However, I believe you did the right thing.   Continue to stay safe.  You did the smart thing.

That's tough, because the kids (and you) probably needed that playground break, but some people just can't be bothered to care about their neighbors and wear a mask.

My cousin and his girlfriend finally hit the road last week. Headed to the Northwest (Seattle) for a month....said they just were getting to a breaking point mentally. Needed to get out.

Good for them. Lot of our friends have done the same thing - just needed to get out. Since we are continuing to work remotely into the fall, much of my staff and faculty have also went to live elsewhere.

We can't leave our flowers and veggies though! We have a friend staying at our place next week so we can go to MD though.

Good to have a place you can find some down time at. Tough to leave the veggies and flowers though. Headed down to Lake Monroe/Condo rental August 1st for a week. I'm actually considering bring my smaller potted pepper plants with us to watch over. Don't think tomatoes will be ready by August 8th when I get back.

Ha, that totally sounds like something I would do - dragging the pepper pots along. Lake Monroe will be awesome for a week. Enjoy!

I'm a Clay Travis fan. Have been for years. Some aren't and that's cool too. Here's some interesting numbers/data. Again just numbers.

https://www.outkick.com/florida-texas-case-surges-produces-small-fraction-of-new-york-deaths/

Sometimes it gets lost that NY, CA, TX and FL are among our most populous states and therefore is logical would have the most cases/ deaths.

Hadn't it seen it reported before that TX may only end up with 1/10th the death rate of NY. A month ago people were worried about the huge spike in deaths that never materialized (not saying deaths didn't increase). Liked his term fear porn.

In other news, 85 infants did not get infected in Nueces Co TX as many MSM outlets reported- https://www.kristv.com/news/coronavirus/canales-clarifies-reports-about-local-infant-covid-numbers

Went to Wal-Mart today for a good laugh, since the mask mandate takes effect tomorrow. You would have thought the blizzard of the century was coming. Scads and scads of people without masks pushing overflowing carts, obviously hoping they won't have to go grocery shopping again in the foreseeable future.

The saddest part was, I still saw more masks than I can ever remember seeing there.

Why would more people wearing masks be sad?  Whatever anyone thinks about whether the virus is as bad as some make it out to be, wearing masks will reduce the spread.  And, the sooner that happens, the sooner things can get back close to normal.

Indiana deaths per 1 million - 419

Texas deaths per 1 million - 139

I meant that even though I saw more people than I could ever remember wearing masks at this Wal-Mart, the vast majority still didn't have them.

Something seems a bit off in the photo 🤔 Looks a bit chilly for Texas or Arizona.

It’s just a file photo and it was cited as that in the article. refrigerated trucks were still requested. No need to get worked up.

This is a TV station reporting, so I hope everyone can agree that the source is fairly reputable.

So, getting back to our discussion a week or so ago about why doctors/hospitals would cook the books, can someone explain this to me?

The article even talks about it.  If there are 100 deaths reported, there is still 99 without this one.  So, why do it?  What is there to gain?  Apparently, someone out there thinks there is something to gain, and if it happens once, you can assume it happens more than once.

Again, and i can't say this enough, it's not a matter of me believing what was published, but this is one case. Cherry picking anomalies from random places across the country paints a picture that there is a systematic problem of the data being gathered, when there's not. I don't understand the motives behind this particular case either. Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe it was an unethical decision. But in the end how much does it matter? This in 1 out of 135k+ cases.

You can assume it happens more than once....and that is a fair assumption. But how much are we talking? 10 times? 100 times? 1,000 times? 10,000 times? At what number do you draw the line to conclude there a systemic reporting problem? If you think it happened a couple of hundred times is it something we really need to worry about? I'm not disputing that we shouldn't fix these cases or prevent them from happening, but it doesn't change the overall narrative.

I posted an excessive death chart a few pages back....and overall deaths are way up over the 5 year median since March. The excessive deaths (increases in death over the 5 year average) add up very closely to the COVID deaths being reported. Being that there wasn't a catastrophic earthquake since March, I think it's safe to assume these overages can be attributed to COIVD.  If the excessive death figures generally back up the death count, it leads me to believe that the anomalies, are in fact, anomalies.

Are the deaths being reported 100% accurate? No. It's impossible.

But if they are off, say, 2% does that make this virus significantly less deadly in the grand scheme of things? Or change how we should deal with it?

The damage is that it causes people not to believe other things they hear about Covid.  For example, someone will use this as an excuse not to wear a mask.  I firmly believe masks to be something that is beneficial in fighting this disease.  But, between the politics and the outright dishonesty, it's going to be impossible to unite the country in the fight, which is the only way to win.

Crap like this is simply unnecessary.
