Stories That Make You Shake Your Head At The World

YES. If we pretend to care about our kids, let’s do this. Let’s also put in speed limiters on automobiles on residential streets. They do it for mopeds here, why not cars (sure, I know ‘Merica and FREEDUMB)?

The two reasons the US life expectancy are plummeting against the rest of the world are mainly for two reasons - guns and cars. Both fixable with some balls.

I bet you'd find poverty is directly associated with both of those. It is with unintentional firearm deaths and probably vehicles too. Safety isn't cheap. Old cars and Saturday night specials are though.

I bet you are right. I’ve not posted the death rates USA map. But it is DIRE. Poor states with no investment in health or infrastructure are the early death winners. Ding, ding, ding. But as long as those fat, old men in the statehouses are coddled and cared for, we are all good.

I think this is a good idea

"The 9mm Biofire Smart Gun locks the moment it leaves your hand and cannot be fired unless an authorized user picks it back up."

Maybe eventually retrofit all firearms with the technology...

I just had thought about these. Would be a perfect compliment to the armed teacher argument.  Solves the issue of unauthorized access.

Chicago seems fun.

"However, it is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities"

but... when your Mayor Elect is willing to say things like the above.... geeeeesh. Where is the accountability? The only thing those children are starved of is mentorship.

Love my hometown with all of my heart but they've lost it and the continued devastation of what was once a world class city is very sad. Will take years to unpack the damage of the last decade to get it back and sadly it may never come back.

Have 2 weekend trips planned this summer for Cubs games and out on the Lake. Sadly the group of 20 or so is already having second thoughts until we see how things shake out over the next month or two.

I tend to agree with that statement (but don’t know the context, so could be very ignorant), but yes there needs to be some accountability. I’m not okay with writing off kids b/c of their lack of support and opportunity.

There are entire segments of our society that we have decided to write off b/c they don’t look or act like us.

Did I see that there was ANOTHER multiple shooting in Louisville over the weekend? And four teens killed at a birthday party in Alabama?

Barely a blip on the radar, I guess b/c it’s so common.

Saw a REALLY good post over the weekend positing that if politicians were the ones being killed (instead of our children, who are apparently expendable) then there would definitely be change.

Heck, these a$$hole politicians will push for guns everywhere - EXCEPT many of their events where they are not allowed. Hypocrites.

If you are 16+ and you do the types of things they are doing in Chicago, they should be arrested and tried as adults.

I just had a student sent up for 10 years for 4 arson incident, among other things. You can be young, you can be inexperienced, but at the end of the day.. you are still responsible for your own actions, and imo, these individuals are well old enough to understand the difference in right and wrong.

16-18 year old me did a LOT of stupid stuff. But I was a white kid in a small town, so it all worked out for me.

But yes, your point stands. Some of these kids are not going to make it in society.

I do think it’s funny that these kids are old enough to know right and wrong, but wealthy white collar criminals and politicians (who had EVERY advantage) can claim to not know better and nothing happens.

I’ve got no answers or solutions honestly, and not giving near enough time to kids like people like you. So, I will bow out of this conversation. Appreciate what do, but there are not enough people like you for so many of these kids.

Not sure why the race matters. And 16-18 yr old me did a lot of stupid too.

There are black kids in small towns that get away with stuff too, that have rules stretched for them too. I teach one of them. I can't begin to list the amount of things the school corp has done for that student, not stuff they do for other kids, that's for sure.

I also have gobs of white kids, who grow up poor as dirt, or sexually abused, or in and out of foster care, or have parents in prison---THAT DON'T GO AROUND VANDALIZING CARS/PROPERTY.

If you think race doesn’t matter, I can’t help you. It absolutely matters.

We will have to agree to disagree. Different people, different cities, different experiences. We aren’t always going to agree, and I certainly agree that the word crazy applies to your own comments.

We could have just had a conversation about the actions of those this weekend in Chicago, the actions of 16/17 yr olds.. you brought up race. There, in my eyes, is nothing crazier than that.

Always blame the system, though.

And yes, agree to disagree.

I lay the blame where it belongs. Last I’ll say on this.

5 people shot and killed Friday night through early Sunday morning in Louisville.

2 died and several others wounded when someone fired into a crowd in a park.

Another shooting killed two men and injured a woman.

Yet another shooting killed a man in a common bar and restaurant district.

A 17 year old boy was shot while riding a bike, but is expected to survive.

Another man was beaten with a tire iron and is not expected to live.

Louisville has totally gone off the rails from a violence standpoint.

Geez, that’s horrible. I only saw the mention of the two near the previous shooting.

I just looked up the gun homicide rate on the CDC for Kentucky - 20.8!! (Per 100,000). I know some people think NY is dangerous, but we are at 5.3.

How about the 16 year old African American boy who was shot by an 80 year old white guy because the kid rang his door bell.  He was sent to pick up his younger brothers but went to the wrong address accidentally.  He's in critical condition in a Kansas City hospital.

Man, the photos of him with his siblings is really heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine what the family is going through.

Just getting caught up here... The wildings in Chicago have been going on for years. 3 straight nights this past weekend. Seems to be the worst when the weather starts to get nice. Will last all summer. This is the main factor why Walmart closed some of the Chicago stores. Large groups would just walk in a carry out what they could. WMT lost tens, if not hundreds of millions in Chicago as a result. Chicago is (has been) going downhill and I don't see that changing (especially with the new anti police mayor).

https://cwbchicago.com/ is a great website for timely news. They often include videos.

Here's a recap and reactions from the Mayors- https://chicagodefender.com/mayor-elect-brandon-johnson-issues-statement-on-weekend-violence/

Ralph Yarl is in stable condition...

I feel for him and his family, and I hope he has a full recovery...

But let's let all the facts be gathered before we make any judgements...

Appreciate the context. We have a fair amount of that here. And always worse in the summer.

What I'm reading states that he's in critical condition, but either way it's bad.  But sure, let's see what can be determined through the facts.  I'm going to keep my biased opinions to myself.  SMH.
