My issue was after you evaluated Cupps, Gunn, Leal, and Banks... then knew Newton wasn't playing this year--- you still didn't fill the scholly. That's stupid.

And it's optics more than anything else.

Of all the flak Woody took this year, the most deserved was not using that scholarship. X hadn't been healthy or played much, so it was silly not to bring in another experienced guard.

Never saw it. I’m a huge believer that the college game is a guards game. And we haven’t had the guards necessary since Yogi, which means the Crean era. Just one man’s opinion and philosophy on basketball.

X was too inconsistent in his play for my liking to consider IU a top 10-12 team. Also the lack of shooting and true post size. TJD was great but undersized. Saw that vs Arizona for sure.

I would say they were a consensus top "teen"  or 20. I don't think top 10. That would have been a stretch. And I would agree. Basketball is always about guard play and we haven't had a lot of those the past few seasons.

And by "coaching malfeasance", you mean Teflon John being an idiot, right?

2014-15, and they did legitimately go 10 deep but it was injuries that shut it down.  Cauley-Stein, both Harrisons, Lyles, Ulis, Booker, KAT, Dakari Johnson, Alex Poythress and Marcus Lee all averaged 10+ MPG, but Poythress went down early in the season and Lee was dinged up most of the year.

And it worked, that was the year they were undefeated until they lost to Wisky in the FF.

One of the only times Wisconsin has ever been useful. 😂

Yet someone questioned my suggestion (not here I don't think) that Calipari is a mediocre coach. The talent he was bringing in year-in-year-out at UK I could probably do as well as he did.

Not sure I would include Mgbako in that comparison.  He would have had his scholarship regardless of McNeeley.

Rice is probably better than Fland in the short term but hard to say long term.

Ballo is better than Queen but only have him for a year.

Tucker is supposedly not as good shooting from outside but probably a better defender.

We did pretty good after losing out on all the recruits we thought could get.

Seems like the initial post wasn't really that all those guys were better, more like they were "replaced" by?

No offense, but I think the comment about efficiency is common sense. However, your ceiling is limited if you don’t have shooters. We’ve seen and complained about this game for how many years now? If the argument is that guys like MM, Carlyle, and Rice will improve enough to raise our ceiling, fair enough, but I think that’s a risky proposition. Sure would be nice to secure a sharp shooter that can benefit from guys that are able to attack and distribute the basketball. Otherwise teams will pack the paint and say good luck.

I agree with this, but until the roster is set and the scholarships are filled, we can't yet say we don't have any shooters. Upgrading overall talent seems to be the first and necessary step.

Indy lawyer friend told me it is

    3.3 is a bargain

in a couple years that’s one player

honestly don’t know why you’d spend 700K on a 5 star freshman who has proven nothing if AJ Storr is basically the same price

I don't think many teams are going to do this going forward precisely because of the situation you are describing. Why spend on the unknown.

People are overreacting because we need shooters and one that they were told was coming here just committed to Cincinnati. So we still don’t have a shooter correct, going on how many years? Ballo alone doesn’t fix any problems, and I’m not of the opinion that Carlyle does either.

This team had more than a shooting problem. And having two guys like this on our team would improve our team a lot.
