As someone mentioned earlier, Willard was apparently “surprised” Queen didn’t announce yesterday (according to Maryland 247). On the radio show they mentioned they were a little surprised he didn’t announce after that OV to Maryland as well a couple weeks ago. I think their logic is that Maryland has put in enough time/effort and has enough NIL $ that it should be enough to secure his commitment. So if he backs off his early signing period commitment, they feel it means he’s not sold on Maryland and may never be. I personally think that’s silly since he’s their only target for 2024 so he’s not going to be recruited over and I’m sure Maryland will wait this out until the very end.

Thanks. IMO fingers crossed then because Maryland 247 people feel he’s not ending up a Terp if that’s the case. Plus I think Ware is gonna have an awesome year so it would be nice for Queen to witness that. Not to mention, that’s extended opportunity for Liam to build chemistry on/off the court with DQ.

For those who want the footnotes (it was a rough listen haha) basically they said if they had to make a prediction they still think Queen to Maryland based on the amount of time they’ve recruited him and that him being the only recruit left in the 24 class they won’t lose him to NIL offers. They did say if Queen doesn’t sign during the early signing period he’s not coming to Maryland though. I will also say they didn’t sound extremely confident and at times we’re just making hypothetical scenarios up to keep the convo going.

Except no one at Montverde was signing their NLI to those schools besides Liam/IU today lol.

Could be a coincidence but interesting that DQ’s mom chose to wear crimson today for the Montverde guys signing. If intentional, just goes to show how close the two families are.

Or why not take a chance on IU and transfer back home to Maryland if it doesn’t work out 🤷‍♂️.

While I do agree lol, it doesn’t hurt to demonstrate to DQ and his family how much our fan base wants him and also how passionate we are about our program. Between the TJD post and this, I think it’s been an effective 24-48 hours proving what we can offer in terms of NBA prep and NIL opportunities.

Well if Queen really wants a DQ NIL deal there’s far more in Indiana than Maryland 🤷‍♂️

I don’t think we land him but things that keep me hopeful: 1) He posted that IU official visit video on his Twitter page himself and haven’t seen anything from Maryland. He also liked the photo of Liam saying “don’t go backwards” today from the IU barstool tweet and he rarely if ever likes anything related to his recruitment/schools involved. He usually just shares content related to hyping him up as a ball player. 2) if he commits to Maryland, he’s likely the only commit they will get for that class, which means they also have to rely on the portal and don’t have the NIL funding we have. Also Nova seems to be recruiting local DMV guys just as well. In terms of returners, Idk if he’s played with local guys like DHS/Kaiser but he’s obviously played and won big with Liam and Reneau. 3)The longer this goes, the more Woody has time to remind him that Ware is NBA bound and TJD was one of the best players in CBB last year. Not to mention, Woody had the NBA pitch Willard doesn’t 4) According to people on BTB, apparently Queen stayed with Liam over the summer instead of going home. That goes to show the relationship that they have and also allows us to show Queen even if he’s away from home, he’s in good hands and people his parents like and trust deeply.

As someone who hasn’t been to Assembly Hall since graduating, I hope anyone who can go tonight does so. This staff could really use/deserves our support, especially after today. I would love to see/hear a packed assembly hall reminding Woody and these recruits how much we stick by this program through thick and thin.

Apologies in advance for the long post. Beyond deflating. It’s just so rough being an IU fan. Frustrating that we can never seem to stack classes like others. All I want to feel for the first time in like honestly a decade is that our program has “gotten over the hump” and we have stability. Exhausted from all the extreme highs and lows. This recruitment was huge to me because if Ware has a good season, Woody can sell a lot of bigs in the portal after TJD’s year, so missing on Queen doesn’t sting as much. I think X is a solid PG but I don’t see him being an NBA 1st rounder by any imagination like Fino, so the pitch is more difficult from a player development perspective. I don’t blame Woody for going big or going home. He’s landed top tier out of state talent like Liam, Mgbako, Ware, JHS, Reneau to name a few. Those guys have and will have the biggest impact on our team. IMO, not walking away with either a regular season/post season conference title or a sweet sixteen/further appearance with last years squad hurt us a ton with recruitments like this. Recruiting is far easier when you have tangible evidence to present on visits. We’re now essentially is a position where Woody has to take this current team and exceed expectations, otherwise, we’ll struggle in the portal and it’ll be the nail in the coffin in terms of keeping the momentum up from the past year/two. Ironically, the biggest thing keeping me optimistic is thinking about how Painter/Purdue never really recruit big name talents, but understand their roster and how to utilize players effectively. I really hope that Woody can develop a couple guys this year and we can attack the portal only needing to fill a couple key spots with Liam, Reneau, and (hopefully) Gallo as the foundation.
