Gotta be ok not being the guy basically

Gotcha, thanks. I personally would be fine with adding him and still going for an experienced PG/CG from the portal. Point guard to me is the most important position. Especially when I have PTSD from X from the past couple seasons with injuries/erratic play.

Examples like this are why I’m always impressed with a guy like Cal and his recruiting. Not everyone can be “the guy” yet he finds a way to convince 5-6 they can be or that they should bet on themselves and take the risk.

Not saying it’s going to happen or that I think it will happen, lol.

We are capable of winning all of those games other than at Purdue.

Northwestern, Nebraska, Wisconsin, MSU at home.. We can beat anyone at home.

Penn State, Minny, Maryland on the road.. All beatable.

As long as the guys in the locker room believe that’s all that matters lol.

  3. I think what’s terrifying to me is any scenario I play out in my head it doesn’t end well.

Let’s say we go on a magical tear and win an overwhelming majority of our remaining games. Will it be because Woody has taken the criticisms to heart and made the proper adjustments with his scheme? Did he suddenly develop our guards and perimeter play? Probably not, which means if we win he’ll be able to say “I told you so” despite all the metrics saying this style of play isn’t sustainable for college basketball. Heck, he might even continue to recruit and construct a roster like this years’ for next and justify it with the way we end this season and how we finally meshed.

Then the obvious and likely scenario, we lose a majority of the rest of our games, and Woody gets a second chance and has an uphill battle to keep Reneau/Mac/Liam (maybe add Queen) while trying to land top portal guards despite showing the last 3 years he cares more about getting the ball in the paint every possession than having a balanced attack. If he fails miserably at this, we’ll look like UL and have a half filled Assembly Hall all year and fans will have hit their breaking point, resulting in things like limited NIL $.

Then there’s letting Woody go. While that sounds nice currently, I’m afraid that we won’t be able to land an ideal coach because of using that $ towards his buyout.  Not to mention, I don’t have a warm/fuzzy feeling we can make the right decision when our last 2 have been Archie Miller and Woodson.

Just super frustrating that it’s come to this.

Domestic abuse vs what Pitino got in trouble for are not remotely comparable. Pitino allegedly cheated to win basketball games, Beard allegedly beat his wife.

I’m well aware that domestic violence and illegal bribes are two different things.

My point was that two catholic schools, who you would hope and assume to have a high morale compass, were willing to give a man a second chance fully aware that he was wrapped up in a multitude of distasteful things that a standard catholic would find disgraceful and disqualifying.

This same state and flagship university employed a man who was convicted of assault on a law enforcement officer for nearly 20 years after the fact. Coach Knight faced extradition to Puerto Rico to serve a 6 month jail sentence until the governor of PR ran out of resources.

Spare me with your holier than thou attitude. Chris Beard is paid to win basketball games. He's a basketball coach for crying out loud, not the face of moral compass.

Thank you, someone had to be brutally honest and address the elephant in the room. Not to mention, he physically assaulted a former player (Neil Reed), and said vile things like, “I think if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it.” Not that long ago, I witnessed 17,000+ give him a standing ovation. We didn’t give him the Joe Paterno treatment and tear down his memorabilia and try to completely disassociate because he was a poor representative of our university and our values.

I completely understand and respect anyone that doesn’t want Beard as the coach, I do. It’s very commendable of you to have such standards. I’m just comfortable with calling a spade a spade and admit I’m willing to give Beard the Knight treatment if it means getting back to a stable place.

Also, if the justice system, the NCAA, and Ole Miss all feel it’s ok to give this man a second chance at life, I find myself asking, “well then, who am I to judge?”

If I were Dolson and Whitten, I would simply ask him about the situation, what he learned from it and what measures he’s taking to better himself. If he says things like he’s gone sober, is getting counseling/taking couples therapy, volunteering at a battered woman’s shelter etc, I would feel comfortable hiring him knowing he’s learning from his mistakes and doing his best to prevent it from ever happening again.

Friendly reminder that with all the FBI cheating, strippers, coke, etc involved with Pitino, he was apparently clean enough for multiple catholic schools (Iona, St Johns) to feel he was still fit to represent them.

If any of this mattered don't you think IU would have already landed one of these top coaches everyone wants?

That's assuming IU has even considered any of them.

Great question that unfortunately only Dolson and Glass can answer lol. Obviously I don’t know what they say during these phone calls/zoom meetings. Have no idea if any of these things I pointed out as leverage are utilized or Dolson just spends the pitch talking about his time during the Knight era and trying to recreate greatness.

Truthfully, it could be as simple as these coaches/agents didn’t like Dolsons personality/vision and didn’t feel he was someone they wanted to build a relationship with for 7-10+ years.

I don’t know what it would take to get a good coach here but I know there’s good coaches out there doing more with less at their respective school.

Figure out how to poke his ego then.  Someone has to take this historic dumpster fire program and rise like a Phoenix out of the ashes.

It really shouldn't be that hard.  Tom Crean had us at #1 10 years ago.  Tom Crean ladies and gentlemen.

    Thank you!

Not saying by any stretch of the imagination the next coach HAS to be Jay Wright in order for us to be successful. Plenty of good coaches out there and 68 teams make the tourney each year.

Im more than happy to admit I’m one of the more pessimistic IU fans but I still have hope we can land a good coach. Why? Look at all these basic facts. We are near the top in revenue, spending, social media presence, fan game attendance, tv viewership, etc. We have more than enough for a coach to succeed here. To me it boils down to Dolson and presenting such leverage in a passionate and exciting fashion to these coaches and their agents.

Jay Wright isn’t going to come out of retirement. It’s just not happening.

I understand it’s a slim to none chance, I prefaced that with my wish list lol. It’s not like he’s the only guy I think could win big or quickly here…

My point with Saban is that he said one thing and evidently did another. Dolson at least picking up the phone and calling Stevens shows me he’s at least willing to shoot for the stars and doesn’t shy away from being rejected, which is what a smart AD should do. Imagine how silly the Bama AD would look nowadays if he took that info and accepted it and watched Saban end up at another SEC and compete for national titles every year.

    Totally different situation.

Understand and respect what you’re saying but that wasn’t my point. My point was that just because someone says something and feels a certain way in the past doesn’t mean that the right timing and opportunity can change a perspective. Saban drew a clear line in the sand with that comment but it didn’t prevent the Bama AD from shooting for the stars and being relentless with what he wanted. That attitude and mentality resulted in landing the best college football coach of all time.

Also, not sure why you’re dismissing the idea that we wouldn’t try with Jay Wright when multiple people have said Dolson was in talks with Brad Stevens and his wife about making him the highest paid CBB coach.

People need to stop putting Jay Wright on any list. He said on CBS that he has no desire to get back into college coaching. Mark Few will never leave Gonzaga  because he lives his  fe there. He has a huge house on a lake and him and his sons can go boating anytime they want.

“I’m not going to be the Alabama coach”

  11. I felt it was inappropriate and premature to post my wishlist after the Kansas/Morehead St games but the writing is on the wall now.

As we’ve all mentioned at nauseam, this staff has proven an inability to construct a balanced roster and scheme/formula for success in modern basketball. I wish I had faith they could learn from their mistakes and turn it around but I’ve hit my limit with the stubbornness and excuses from Woody.  He avoids basic metrics that fans and journalists present to help. Not to mention, these issues (scheme, shooting, basketball IQ) stem before Woodson and the fact that Hunter and Walsh were on the previous staff and still can’t see it is also gravely concerning.

Anyway, I want to preface by saying I don’t think we’d have a great chance at a lot of these guys but I think with a quality AD who understands where we would have leverage could pull it off. Not that it even matters because Woody will get an extra year…

Tier 1: Jay Wright, Scott Drew, Mark Few, Eric Mussleman, Bruce Pearl, Chris Beard, Rick Pitino, Tony Bennett, Shaka Smart

Tier 2: Greg McDermott, Porter Moser, Jerome Tang, TJ Otzelberger, Dusty May, Mick Cronin, Dana Altman, Jamie Dixon, Randy Bennett, Mike White, Micah Shrewsberry, Wes Miller, Ed Cooley, Will Wade, Josh Schertz
