I know you are a high level thinker, think about it. The Cam Newton stuff still goes on and it is most definitely not above table.
Cam Newton was declared ineligible twice — Nov. 10, 2010, and Nov. 30, 2010, — but was reinstated in time for Auburn’s next game in each case. The NCAA determined Rogers tried to act as Newton’s athletic scholarship agent, but Newton was reinstated each time because he had no knowledge of any pay-for-play scheme.”

Cam played before NIL and before the rules regarding agents were relaxed.  Relaxed rules = a lot more grey area.

I'm not saying it DOESN'T happen.  I'm saying the need for guys that know all the below the surface networks aren't nearly as important.

I have a question about the NIL and the "Extra" money i heard was added this year.

Is this extra money only for this year?  Do these players we're buying get this extra money for the whole time they are at IU or just this year?  Is a NIL deal for the whole time they play for a school or can they negotiate each year?

I really don't have much of an idea what rules are around the NIL

My guess is that the total fund is probably like a line of credit.  Financial source X has said "I'll fund up to $x over y years".  Our staff then allocates accordingly.

As for the deals....could be either or.  There's nothing that says you can't write a multi-year NIL deal.  If the financiers/programs were smart, they'd structure NIL deals to incentivize kids to stay.  "Ok, you'll get X in 24 installments over the first year.  If you don't transfer, you get X2 as of next year, plus Y "retention bonus" at the beginning of next season."

Have to emphatically agree on this point! Said it a couple times, Yes athletes are getting paid with NIL. However, family members, handlers, AAU coaches and promoters are not NIL recipients! THEY STILL HAVE THEIR HANDS OUT!!!!

Easy as pie to build that in to an NIL payment.  "I want 50K in this account, 25K in this account and the balance in this account." Done.  And it's not like these transactions are going to be audited with a fine tooth comb.

Still clinging to this narrative in 2024 is simply astounding. Please never change. 🤣

"Clinging" would imply that I had this narrative prior to 2024.  Also, nice Reddit-style attempt at a shut down.  "Please never change".  What, no clown emoji? C'mon now...

You really think that "network" is not longer important? 🤣

Nowhere near as important as it once was.

Tom Crean was just talking about that on Hoosier Hysterics.  Your assistants should be geared toward player development.

My two cents but I would add strategy and scheme.   No need to waste time on assistants who are there to “recruit.”   That should be handled in the player personnel (GM) office.   IMO that’s how it should be divided up.

It also just dawned on me….Tom Crean would make a hell of an AD for somebody someday. His Achilles heel was always in game coaching and adjustments (and finding pants that fit). His long term vision and ability to work the media was always great.

In the days when “incentives” had to be of the wink-wink-nudge-nudge variety, having a guy with a “network” like Antigua made sense. Today, Crean is absolutely right. Talent acquisition needs to be in the hands of the head coach and the personnel/support group. Let the three actual assistants focus on skills and development.

It has to be asked…who is the leader? Galloway might not be starting and Reneau doesn’t seem to have the temperament. We saw it a lot this year with X out. When Trayce and Race left….we lost a ton of leadership.

Ballo is a 5th year senior, and when a dude like that talks, people tend to listen. Not sure of his mindset or personality, but he’s a possibility.
