If he deserves time I hope he gets it but so far Archie didn’t think he should get much time and now Woody barely played him in two Bahamas games and not at all tonight. Maybe there is a reason for that. Athletically he seems to have “something” so he might be able to turn it around but he needs to show it in practice.

Its only the first game (that needs to be repeatedly driven home) but a few observations… Race looked great at the beginning of the game I got excited when Stewart hit his two early 3’s, because that’s exactly what we were missing last year, but then his 3 point threat disappeared,. X was out of control early, and looked like he might be a combo of Green and Newkirk, and I audibly gasped when he shot his first 3 pointer as I had not previously seen him play and his stroke was a bit “jarring” I’m hoping Kopp helps open the floor but he didn’t (again….it’s the FIRST game) have a meaningful impact on the game. If that doesn’t change Geronimo could take his spot. I’m hoping Bates turns into a 25-30 minute player but he did not meaningfully impact the game tonight (again, he is only a freshman and it was his first game). KL might get tired of the pine

When Bates gets healthy, and acclimated, I think he will push the guards for 25+ minutes of playing time. Stewart, X, Rob and Bates will get the vast, vast majority of guard minutes.

Not a single player thanked Archie nor do they say anything at all about him. TJD, Race, KL and others would have been gone if we had retained him and we would not have landed Bates. The players go on and on about a more free flowing offense, how they are in better shape and having more fun, how they respect Woodys NBA pedigree, that the team chemistry is better etc etc., etc. They are making it clear what they think about him without saying it. NOW……Let’s see the difference on the court! Can’t wait for the opener and season.

I’m thinking he might be at least half decent competition for our point guards. Out of high school he had offers from Florida, Seton Hall, St John’s, 5 different Big Ten teams, Wake etc but for some reason went to ECU (his ratings dropped and I’m guessing some schools lost interest, but just a guess). He didn’t play more than 7 minutes in ECU’s last 4 games so he entered the portal and transferred to EMU. Hoping to see X and Rob really lock him down.

NIL is here to stay whether we like it or not. I agree with Inequality in that I don’t get the negativity. Whatever people think about these guys it took work and gonads to put this thing together. There will be schools that have interested outside parties, like the HH guys, that put on events like this, boosters that perhaps own car dealerships/restaurants/ insurance companies/investments firms etc etc etc that give a lot of money every year for commercials and/or to podcasts that pay players for interviews. These activities will get ingrained to the point that incoming freshman recruits will virtually be assured they will make 20k, 30k, 50k, 100k (pick a number) their first year if they go to school x,y,z. If we don’t line things like this up we will fall behind. It is what it is… Jimmy Chitwood has left the barn.

Yep. I was an undergrad at IU in the ‘70’s and this was by far the most excited I have been for the start of a season in decades. It was also great to see how fired up the students were. As always I’ll watch every single minute but the air is definitely out of the ballon and I’m thinking a lot about hoops. No doubt our schedule has been incredibly brutal but with even an average offense we would have beaten Cincy and MSU and while I did not expect us to beat IA/PSU/OSU I did not think we would be totally dominated with no shot of remotely being a threat in the 4th quarter. Hopefully we win tomorrow as a 3-9 type of season will damper the momentum.

You might be right but outside of the $1,000,000 outliers (Bama QB etc) how many players are making serious or meaningful cash? The NIL is still in its infancy but I’d be interested in how much a Kopp, Geronimo, X Johnson type of player makes via the NIL this year and if it is enough to impact players decisions (going pro, into the portal, graduating, etc). In regards to a player like TJD. Let’s say he is projected to be a fringe second round player in the next draft. He (or similar players in his situation as I have no idea how motivated he is by the money) might be more likely to stay in school if he is earning $300k via the NIL but enter the draft if he is only making 10k. I just have no idea how much second round type college players are making via the NIL at this point

I think it’s also that the players have bought in. They constantly say positive things about Woody (a lot), and what is going on, while they virtually never praised, or said anything positive about, the former coach that won’t be named. Everything has been great so far, and I am thrilled with our abrupt shift to positive mojo, but to keep the ship sailing in the right direction we will obviously need the W’s.

The good news, I think, is that the number 1 rated PF in the country is getting Alabama crystal balls. Doubt Clowney, at the same position, would want to join him.

I’m just a little surprised that this year we have the most transfers out, so far, in the BT. On the flip side we had some decent transfers come in this year.

Maybe but I would guess Curry already knows what he is getting into with Ohio State. He only needs to look at their ‘21 class to see that in one year they insanely landed the 2nd, 3rd, 10th and 25th ranked DL’s in the entire country! That’s just crazy potential depth and talent and some really good players are going to ride the pine.
