Thanks @IUfaninIllinois for starting the thread. I enjoy talking about this topic because it’s really interesting.

To answer the question (with speculation), Nike is still a company that needs to make smart business decisions. They have a board of directors to answer to, CEOs and owners can’t just do whatever they want. A market value will be established and companies won’t be frivolous paying over that value in order to secure a recruit for one executive’s allegiance to a certain program. Based on the scenario you painted above, why doesn’t Michael Jordan offer huge, over valued endorsement contracts to secure free agents in Charlotte?

A company uses marketing to make money from a specific endorsement, not break even….or lose it. Further more, how is Michigan or UCLA going to feel about MJ and Jumpman steering recruits to UNC? They’re endorsed by Jumpman too. Playing favorites could put those sponsorships in jeopardy…..and these college sponsorships are way more valuable to Jordan than a recruit who may only stay at UNC for a year.

    Water will find it’s level.

You’re very welcome and I mean I think you’re absolutely spot on with what you said because if what were true above happened then we could ask Mark Cuban to tell al of his sponsors to sponsor our basketball team and they could all even be sponsored by the Dallas Mavericks. I will say I do wish Cuban was more involved in the basketball program in the sense of could you imagine Cuban asking Luka Doncic to come hang out with the kids for a long weekend and he gives him some sort of appearance fee. I mean kids eat that type of stuff up and it’s something I wish Indiana used to it’s advantage more. Or even for CMW asking some former players he coached. Now a days you just have to get creative in your recruiting. I mean think about how nba teams recruit free agents they always have the big boys come with them to the meeting. For Durant when he went to GSW even though it was the off-season curry, Thompson, and green all were at the meeting.

So... not super exciting, but kinda cool.  I am in Cartersville, GA at a big live period event with my son's high school team.  We're playing the big dawgs.  Milton is preseason #3 in the nation, FSU High School is Charlie Ward's school (I actually coached against him yesterday and lost in OT), McEachern (GA) is a big time program, and Grey Collegiate is as well.  Those are the 4 teams our 3A school is playing.  Anyway, tons of college coaches here and I was standing about 20 feet from Crean for awhile.  Just a really weird dude.  Bennett is here, Oats, Self, Hamilton, Pearl, and a ton of assistants.  On a really cool dad note, my son hit 7 threes against FSU.  So... Brice Sensabaugh... plays for Lake Highland Prep in Orlando, FL.  They are staying at our hotel.  I have been talking with his coach a lot.  He has some offers, but appears to be rising stock wise.  He's a 6'6'' guard.  Thick looking athlete that can shoot the 3.  He said he heard from Coach Woodson the other day.  No idea of the interest level, but pretty cool.

    Message me please. Thanks!

Right, but it does show that they're serious about helping the athletes earn money and aren't just sitting around twiddling their thumbs. So they're not disadvantaging themselves like they would without a deal with a company like that. From what I've seen, under Dolson IU has been one of the leading schools in preparing for NIL.

One advantage IU has over many other schools (at least as far as basketball is concerned) is a large and passionate fanbase. This can lead to more money for athletes. On that note, I started a twitter account just for the purpose of giving IU athletes another follower since I already had FB and Instagram accounts. I recommend to any others on here without accounts on those platforms to make accounts even if the only thing they do is follow IU athletes.

You make some very good points and I do agree.

Yep, that is who they partnered with to help the athletes. IU also has a deal with Opendorse.

The problem with this is that other schools also utilize this company so they don’t really have an advantage. They need cutting edge ideas on top of working with this firm IMO.

  5. So starting July 1st we all know players can jump on the NIL bandwagon. All top programs are gonna realistically be on an even playing field when it comes to this. I have an idea. Wouldn’t it be smart for a school like Indiana to hire a team of people that will get Indiana kids the absolute best NIL opportunities money can buy? In order to have a leg up on the recruiting trail there is no limits when it comes to what Indiana can provide their kids. Ideas? Suggestions?

I know if I was highly ranked recruit I'd waste an official visit on a school I'm not interested in located in Indiana over other schools I'm not interested in located in places like Florida. It seriously makes no sense to say that IU was "never an option" even though he visited. They may have been far behind the favorite and he'll probably go elsewhere but I can't see anyone wanting to visit Bloomington, IN so bad that they fake interest just to get an official visit.

I mean if I’m a kid I’m faking an official visit to Hawaii 🤷🏻‍♂️😂😂

It's almost july . We have one commit in the class from the previous staff.

    We've seen this movie before.

You do know there is this thing called Covid where kids couldn’t visit campus and on top of that it’s literally a New staff. So what you expect kids to not a pick a team who was courting them for years and all of a sudden just pick IU because of Mike Woodson. The transfer portal worked because it was an even playing field and 2023 it’s an even playing field because those recruits are just now being recruited I fully expect for us to be out on any recruits from 2022 that are committing right now. The ones that aren’t committing until spring of next year you MAYBE have an argument. We aren’t going after low hanging fruit and if we were of course we would win the recruiting battle but we are gonna lose WAY more than we win on recruits because Coach Wood is trying to bring this school back to its glory days PERIOD. Go eat some chicken wings and enjoy life.

Before y’all go “all in” with your chips, you might want to see the team win some real games and not lose at home to in-state rivals.

Thad Matta is still the key ingredient in my opinion.

Besides winning I wanna see some passion and excitement just like we see with IU football. I feel during CAM’s tenure everything was so boring and robotic.

I think in just about every scenario Mike is coach for 4-8 years. I think the pressure for him to hand over the reigns to Fife will be pretty big. He already has pretty serious back problems...I think he can only go for so long. I think his whole goal all along was to right this ship....get IU basketball back on track. Return the glory and history and alumni back into the fold and then set this thing on a steady coarse for the next coach. Maybe if he has championship caliber teams in those final years he may hang on a couple more but honestly I think this man loves coaching...but mostly just wants to get IU back to where it belongs...and when that happens he will happily step aside into an advisory role and let the young guys take over. Just my personal opinion.

I think you make s lot of great points I think the key will be how long will fife stay as the assistant coach.

  10. I’ll be honest I was skeptical of coach Woodson but he has been impressive. If he has success which I think he will then I could see him retiring here because I don’t think he would leave for greener pastures. So my question is how long does everyone think he could realistically be here for with him being in his early 60s?

They also have the best burnt ends, brisket, smoked turkey and amazing sides. A must stop if I ever make it back to Charleston.

If any of you guys get to St. Louis area my second job is at beast craft bbq in Belleville Illinois. We have a 30 oz pork steak that you don’t need a knife, we will have wagyu brisket once covid is over, we have deep fried Brussel sprouts with deep fried pork belly on top. Deep fried and smoked snoots, homemade kielbasa, homemade pickles, smoked and grilled ribs, etc

Yeah, can't say I've ever understood the wisdom in that.  Right or wrong, it's always been interesting to me hearing what people close to the program were saying/thinking.  I've never felt any need to keep score on their predictive results.  That just shows that sometimes no one really knows.

I will say on the other hand that it didn't help when an insider got defensive when responding.

I think you are absolutely spot on I just think as men we get defensive when feeling attacked! It’s human nature

I can't remember if it was after the Stevens deal or the site breaking.

Either way, a few people here gave him heck for relaying what he was told.  My interpretation of his source was a booster.  It sure sounded like all the boosters and even old players were hearing Stevens was a legit possibility.

I think he can blend in over a btb because they have gotten larger and they have 2-3 other guys bringing tidbits.

Yeah I’d say this site has pretty much pushed all insiders out. It’s pretty unfortunate when people do this for a free site.

  14. So interesting tidbit. I coached Jack Maher in boys volleyball with my wife in 6th grade before I became a basketball coach at the same school. He is the first professional player to come from that grade school in history. Joey which is starting on defense now did not get coached by either of us but the youngest one Josh was coached by my wife in 5th grade and at the time I asked their dad who was better at that age and he said josh was better than jack. So IU will be getting another Maher on defense in a couple of years when Josh goes to college I’d assume.
