Thats a clear case of ignorance of strength training. That’s not a personal attack that’s just plain stating the facts. I can’t grasp how people are still stuck in the mindset of the 70s and 80s.

Strength training makes EVERYTHING in sports better if done right in the longterm.

And to think multi million dollar athletics and full time strength coaches with Master’s and PhD’s in human physiology, biomechanics, exercise science…aren’t well aware of what they’re doing is again ignorance of the topic at hand.

whoever would think it’s “common knowledge” that strength training makes a basketball player shoot worse, and yet every program ANYWHERE does it is beyond me. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I can’t like this post enough!!!! Post of the year!!!!

His shot is very good, and as he got comfortable, it became excellent

He is also fairly good at getting offensive rebounds and powering back up.

To me, it's all about ball handling. Mac takes more than a dribble or two and I get really anxious.

If he can improve his ball handling, and his ability to drive the ball, I think that's where he becomes next level.

That 2-3% improvement you mention should come from just being more experienced, relaxed and confident.

Fair points. I’m sure there is some little tweak that gets him more comfortable off the dribble which I also thought was a struggle of his in shooting the three but don’t have exact data to back it. I’m sure there is a site out there that shows his percentages of off dribble threes, posted up threes, and off screen threes

Personally if it came down to it…. Thornton. Similar players Perkins might be a little better but the extra year of eligibility is key. I can see IU getting a lot of SRs in the portal and personally I don’t want to live on the portal getting 5/6 kids every year.

I also think it’s a matter of how we feel about how many of the 4 top 2025 kids we think we are gonna get. 1. You want spots for as many of the 4 as you can and 2. You want some experienced mixed in if you get 2-4 of them. I do think even outside of Indiana the class of 2025 is pretty strong so that could help that mix of young players and portal players.

Early on you could tell he was in shell shock from the speed, physicality, and his lack of awareness. He couldn’t stick to his man if he was wearing Velcro. Second half things slowed down…he found his feet…started to learn to play a little defense and the light clicked in his head.

I’m hoping someone works with him or he gets his own shooting coach in offseason because even if he improves 2-3% from 3 that’s huge for us.

I think not having to deal with point guard duties would help Galloway.

To me he either needs to be paired with a shooter or a point guard who can shoot 3s. You can’t have him on the floor for long stretches without a shooter next to him. He takes wayyyy too many 3s for being 30%. His best skill is getting to the hole. When he drives and leaves his feet that’s when he has issues because he makes dumb passes.

Admire your enthusiasm. Wish I could share it. (sigh) Until I see proof consistently on the floor, color me skeptical.

Not dissing Bryson at all. I'm sure he's very good. And we'll certainly be better (but maybe not great) because of him.

Also I just don’t think mgbako is playing the 4 in the NBA so if he’s told he’s a 3 in the NBA then I think he would be very reluctant to play the 4 next year

Bigger stage, more pressure, higher expectations …. 🤷🏻‍♂️. I don’t know. Don’t think any of it should be attributed to Clif. We need to recruit better and make sure those guys are dogs, work at it. Regardless of what Clif does, if these guys shoot a couple hundred FTs a day (or maybe more), they’ll get better. Obviously don’t shoot enough.

You don’t think working out muscles has anything to do with shooting? I don’t know your background but have you coach basketball? Your legs have absolutely everything to do with it and if you work the wrong part of muscles in your legs or overwork them then that has a major impact.

I agree. You can knock him for having a bad roster. That is a legit beef. But the style of play is based on the guys on the floor.  His best player last year was TJD. His best players this year were Ware and Reneau. Not too many teams could stop either 1 on 1.  It would make no sense for this year's IU team to jack up 30 3's a game. If he has no shooters again this year or has shooters but offense still sucks...

But the main reason was because of the roster more than style of play. For them to play "modern" basketball this year, Ware and Reneau would both only play 5.  MM at 4, TG at 3, AL or CJ at 2 and Cupps at one. The problem is 1, 2 & 3 - can't or don't shoot or score consistently. Had to go to the double post again to get the best players on the floor. Watch the NBA (modern basketball). It's inside out. Teams try to score underneath, if they can't, they kick it out (quickly). The key is who you are kicking it out to has to be able to drain the open three. They definitely need to shoot more threes but in reality they just need to make more.

I agree with this but if you’re getting Leland Walker plus Tucker plus Perkins plus TG plus Newton plus Mgbako you only have one guy who’s over 35% from 3 and that’s Mgbako at 37. That doesn’t scream a team who will make more 3s. Plus in this scenario leak goes back to not hardly playing. Plus you still would need 3 more 4/5s so that leaves open only 2 spots to get players that are shooters. If 1 of those 2 is Conwell and the other is the dude from Bradley or dude from Evansville then I feel completely different about it.

I was thinking from an athleticism defensive standpoint he could be solid. Swap him with Galloway and it could work.

That means Galloway would play the 3 and Mgbako the 4 and Reneau the 5. Woody hasn’t shown he’s willing to do that very often unless Mgbako’s feedback from NBA is you need to play the 4 which I would be shocked they say that so he is going to want to play the 3. If you have Tucker/galloway at the 2 it means you won’t pursue Conwell which is a horrible mistake and then you must have a high percentage shooter at the point guard position.

    Perkins

Conwell (or another transfer wing shooter)

    Tucker

    Mgbako

    Reneau

Do you really think Woodson will have TG come off the bench? It’s been said Perkins is way better at the 2. IMO Perkins is my backup plan to Conwell. I find out through back channels how interested Conwell is in IU and I throw him a ton of money to sweeten the deal. ISU and SLU can’t offer him what we can IMO. Maybeee SLU but paying Avila and Conwell would be super tough plus trying to build a new team for his style.

Fair enough...Like I said, he's a lot like Galloway, only more consistent, and more of a vocal leader...

Perkins brings some things that can't be measured...But the toughness/leadership component is an important one to me...

Let’s say we take Perkins. What would your starting lineup be? How would you stagger in 3 point shooters so teams don’t pack the lane? What players would you get to back up our starters?

  12. 10 minutes ago, OGIUAndy said:

What about Leland Walker then? And if Perkins is playing off ball like some have mentioned, then 3 shooting is not going to be improved whatsoever based on Perkins history. Not to beat a dead horse but IU needs shooting!! I am fine with bringing in tough nosed, not turnover prone PGs, but then we've got to 100% bring in some cold stone killer shooters.

This 1000%. If he comes I hope he helps our team but this move doesn’t truly help our team at all and feel like we will be in same boat as last year. Especially since tuckers strength is mid range. Teams can just pack the lane again.

Not a freak athlete but really skilled

Looks better all around than Liam imho

Poor man’s Evan Turner or bigger JHS ?

Put on 20 pounds and he could be a tough matchup for small wings

Jumper is a little funky but it’s smooth and goes in….turnaround is advanced for a 17 year old

A lot too like & work with

The problem is Cliff Marshall is used to training nfl guys and while I agree some people need to put on weight it seems a lot of guys that came to us as shooters and all of a sudden have struggles can be linked to him not working on the correct areas needed for basketball players. Also sure seems like our players have had a lot of lower leg injuries. Way more than other schools since he has taken over. I wish an NFL team would come scoop him up

It’s also about being in the right situation….playing in GS is a bigs dream….the spacing and attention that Curry, Thompson and company provide…the vision of Paul…helps him tremendously. Trayce fits the pro game much better than banging in the B1G with 7’0 280 centers night in and out playing back to basket. He plays well facing up and in space where he can use his athleticism.

Plus he gets more playing time because DG is a dumb dumb who wouldn’t surprise me if they traded in the offseason especially with how much Trayce has came along and Trayce isn’t a trouble maker.

They will have a plan for 2025. Right now they are just focused on acquiring talent for next years roster that fits together.

I get that but who you get affects 2025. If you get a bunch of sophomores that play the same position as the 4 -2025 kids compared to getting 4 - 1 year player that makes a difference. Like I said it usually plays itself out but to me you have to plan ahead in roster construction. That’s why it’s probably important to have a person in a role like Thad was in previously that focuses on those types of management.
