I think so and they won't make the tourney. Get this, they haven't won a road game in 13 months, losing 14 straight.

Their AD is retiring. I could see him firing Holtmann and giving the new AD a clean slate. $15M buyout if before April 1.

I thought that guy was a can’t miss hire.

There have been a lot of complaints about our defense, rightfully so. Even last year with a veteran group that was almost all in their second year in the system, and a lot of guys now playing pro ball it barely cracked the top 50. This is what Woodson said on his radio show:

I’d love for someone to defend the scheme in light of this quote. I’m not even debating how well it might work if it was run exactly how he intends, but if it’s so hard to execute properly it’s a scheme issue. He admits it’s hard to execute for this group but he hasn’t adjusted it.

Things like this, and the guard issues are just massive misses that can’t be put on anyone other than the staff. The seeming lack of accountability or willingness to change is what leads me to thinking we need to move on. I desperately want to see some ownership from the staff and adjustments.

There have been similar debates regarding Purdue’s FB staff.

The pro-Walters folks say the players need 2 years in the offensive and defensive schemes to really excel.

The counter-argument is that in the portal era, you need schemes that first year players can easily grasp and execute.

I will say that the cupboard of established, successful P5 coaches who might be interested, and who would fit the bill, is looking a little thin right now. Shaka Smart probably would come. I'd bet Pearl would come if offered, but again he might not fit the bill. Maybe Mick Cronin, if he's ready to get back to the Midwest?

Beyond that, you might be looking at someone like Dennis Gates, who has lost a bit of luster this year. And even then, he wouldn't be that exciting (based on record to date).

    T. J. Otzelberger might be interesting down the road, but needs to prove himself a bit more before landing a job like IU.

So, even if IU decides to move on from Woodson, unless you're convinced Dusty May is the guy, it might be better to wait another year or two.

Would Beard be a non starter with the IU administration?

I agree but my concern is that Woody refuses to play Reneau or Mac at the positions that maximize their skill set (5 and 4 instead of 4 and 3). Either those 2 players have convinced themselves they are something they aren’t, or the coaching staff is suffering from hubris and thinks they can rapidly develop them into what they want to be. If Mac is seen as solely a SF, him or Liam will go elsewhere. They won’t split time when both have vocalized their goal to be OAD.

To me, Liam you have to do everything in your power to keep him. His skill set is ideal for a small forward and any guard or big would love to play with a 3-level, high volume scorer. That skill set to me is priority number 1. If we have to gut the roster, I can at least feel optimistic Building a team around him.

I read somewhere that the staff promised Mgbako that he would play the 3 if he came to IU. Don’t know if that’s true obviously.

Watching Indiana is like going to a funeral. There is zero excitement and enthusiasm. We need a coach that can not only build a roster, develop talent, instill discipline within the program and create excitement and energy. I never thought I would say this but a guy like Bruce Pearl would do that. It doesn't have to be Pearl but someone with that personality. Woodson and Dolson are like brothers from a different mother. Boring as hell with a personality of a cardboard box.

Maybe, but I mostly think it’s a poorly constructed roster. I don’t know that the 3 five stars fit with each other, let alone the rest of the rotation.

With NIL/Portal I don’t know that you need a dynamic recruiter as much as you need someone who knows how to build a cohesive basketball team.

And player development is another component that the NBA guys seem to struggle with. I made fun of Crean, but kids got better under him.

I didn't watch it. It was over before it started and as I have said many times I am sick and tired of garbage basketball and coaching.

We are the cellar dwellers of the league and have regressed to where Northwestern and Wisconsin were 30 years ago.

Nah. IU has some nice pieces. Bring back Reneau and Mgbako, with McNeeley, and then go fill out the rest of the roster in the portal.

If you need to send some kids packing, well it’s nothing personal, just business.

I don’t think Woody knows how to assemble a roster, and why would he ? NBA coaches don’t do that. He needs a GM.

    Just my unsolicited two cents.

But honestly, he isn't doing a terrible job as GM. I'm sure he's hovering over the shoulder of every coach and player, which is probably the issue.

But as far as roster building and drafting, it's hard to argue that they have a ton of talent on the team.

But they’re not accountable to the coach. The star players are all buddies with Jerry, so it’s a country club culture. That wasn’t the case when Jimmy and Parcells were there.

And Will McClay is the real talent evaluator/GM. If his son moves away for college, he’ll likely take an actual GM job somewhere.

Could you imagine Belichick's head exploding every time Jerry Jones ran his mouth to the media?

Jones literally meets with the media after every game like he's a coach.

There is no way Belichick would deal with that.

Jerry gives out more injury info in one of his weekly Dallas sports radio hits than Belichick gave out in 24 years as the Pats coach.

Jerry's main problem is Jerry. He needs to show some humility and actually turn over to football operation to an actual GM

I don’t know if it’s humility, or if he just can’t stand not being in the middle of it. He hated every minute of Parcells being in charge of everything.

He doesn’t want to watch someone else play with his toy - HE wants to play with his toy.

Who handles Pitts personnel decisions? If it's Tomlin, maybe it's fair to ask about his contact, if it isn't?--- Tomlin has every right to walk out on that question by the reporter. Man is one of the most successful coaches in football's history, the 3rd best coach in this era...

And if he didn't draft Najee in 1st (who I thought was a bust the whole time), Pickett (who wtf, how do you take him in the 1st), and Pickens (a complete head case).. I'm not sure why anyone would think to ask Tomlin that question.

I always wondered if Canada was pushing for/vouching for Pickett.

Normally I would say to keep him. I don't like to be overreact, but when you have Vrabel and Belichick out there, I think you have to take a shot.

I want Jerry to fire MMC and get Vrabel. Or maybe let him coach one more year and get Tomlin next offseason, if Mike doesn’t extend his deal.

Jerry’s main problem is Dak isn’t the guy, if you want to go to Super Bowls. But, they have to redo his contract this offseason or swallow a $60 million cap number for 2024. Which would mean cutting several good players.
