it's wild when people point to the last two years as successes and this year is just an anomaly.

I didn’t say the last two years were a rousing success, but they sure were an improvement over the previous years. You have to remember I was around for the RMK’s three national championships, so I know what success looks and feels like. I’m as disappointed as most about this year’s results, but I also know things can change in a hurry in today’s game, so I hope the powers to be make the right decision about next season, whatever that ends up being.

I guess I just don't understand why you believe him that he wants to play 4 out/1 in? Actually, I'm not even sure if he's really even saying that's what he wants any more.

On the personnel, he hasn't even tried. I understand the guard play isn't great this year, but we easily could have played way more minutes with Mgbako at the 4.

Last season, especially when Race Thompson was injured, why did we never play minutes with TJD, Kopp, Bates, Galloway, JHS? I'm not sure if we ever played Kopp at the 4 in two years.

    He doesn't even try.

Like I say, we’ll see next year, if he really means it, because that will be his last, if he doesn’t follow through. But this is all speculation, because we’re not the ones making the decision. Personally, I can live with it either way, but I think it’s a bad look for the school and recruiting to fire a coach after one off year. But, that’s  just my opinion.

I understand you think that, and then I asked questions based on that which you chose to ignore.

I would really like to understand why we think this year is not his preferred play style based on Woodson's history and his own comments.

Because I believe him when he says he would like to play 4 out and 1 in, but personnel dictates what style you play, and unfortunately, we had no choice this year. We missed on the guys that would have made a difference, and our returning players either didn’t improve or in some cases regressed. No excuses though, because it all falls on the head coach. Next season will be his make or break year.

In three off-seasons, he's landed one guard transfer XJ, in year one. He whiffed in the portal in the second summer also. He has no guards in the class of 24.

I agree, and that’s why we’re in this situation. So, if he gets another year, he better land some scoring guards or it could be worse next season. Best case is he turns it around, and we’re the top scoring team in the nation…that’s the optimist in me!

I'm curious what makes you think he is capable of wanting to change?

Does the quote about ignoring analytics saying we are better playing 4 around 1 and him clapping back about playing two bigs concern you?

What about the fact that he forced the Knicks to play bigger after having a good season and it got him fired, does that concern you about his intentions?

Like I said, I think he gets another year, so we’ll see. He whiffed in the portal this year, with the exception of Ware, and was forced to go big again out of necessity. Without going down low, we wouldn’t have scored 50 pts in most games. Our guards are that bad.

I appreciate you holding your ground on what you believe, but can i ask why 3 years of the same thing is any different than 4 years of the same thing, even if we win more games next year with the same scheme?  Just curious.  I honestly have zero opinion anymore on IU basketball.  Just don't care enough to invest my energy in one way or the other.  But i am always interested in why people go against the stream of the majority.  Again, not saying you're wrong or anything.  Just interested

As a fan I go back to the 71-72 season, and have to admit Woodson was one of my favorite players, but  I don’t think that clouds my opinion of him as a coach. I just believe he’s capable of changing the style of play (scheme) with the right roster. As I said, we struck and missed on some game changers this off season, and he rolled the dice and decided to go with the backcourt we had and that was a mistake, so that’s on him. I think he gets one more year to prove everyone wrong. The danger is with all the talk about a coaching change, we may have such a mass exodus at the end of the season that the portal won’t provide enough relief next year….so we’ll see.

The response to that though is that we’ve played that style three years in a row. It’s not just missing last offseason and having to adjust to this year’s roster. It’s been every year. Two first round draft picks and a veteran team last year masked the issues we see this year IMO. But even then, we got smashed in the second round. Needed a miracle run late in year one to make the tournament before getting smashed in the first round.

Good points, and if it’s the same next season, I’ll be at the front of the line saying it’s time for a change.

I think for most of us, it’s not just about him having one bad year. It’s the declining metrics in every single category that have taken place since day 1, and the refusal to play modern day basketball. The question has become (for a lot of us), will any of that magically change in year 4? If not, is it really a good business decision to keep him?

I don’t think it’s so much a refusal to play modern day basketball as it is was we missed on guys like Knecht and Timberlake, and the decision was made to go with X, Cupps and Galloway, with the hope that Gunn and Banks would make a sophomore leap, and be threats from the outside. We all know how that turned out, so we were left with the same old let’s go down low to Reneau and Ware. Now is that on Woodson - yes, but is it correctable - yes. So I say, let’s see how next season plays out.

i wouldn't bet on not losing out.  which game do you point to as a win?  would you agree he should be let go if we do that?

I think we win tonight, but if I’m wrong, and we lose out, then I couldn’t argue if he’s let go. Although, I still think it would be a mistake to let him go after only 3 seasons. Even though this season has been a disaster, I don’t think it’s wise to fire a coach for one off year. If we have a repeat next year, then yes.

  10. I wasn’t able to watch today, but now that I know the outcome, and have had time to look at the box score, I’m glad that I missed the game. Once again terrible from three (2-15) and the FT line (14-25). That says it all.

When do the women play again?

Nothing could look as bad as that last NBA All Star game and still call itself basketball!

    It was close last night.

The announcers kept saying how easy it was for Nebraska to score, and hard it was for us. That’s because our defense was nonexistent.

Yeah, it is the system.  Posted the video from Mike's Knicks days in his retirement thread.  The reason we struggle is because of the decisions he has made.  I don't think our guards are as bad as they look.  I think they would look fine if they were placed in a system that matched their play or they were not being forced to play outside their positions.

I would love to see what this team would look like under a different coaching staff.

You might get your wish sooner than you think. After last night, I can imagine there are some serious conversations going on today (and I don’t mean the fans) about replacing CMW.
