Why do you always do this? It's the ONE recruit the staff put the most time, effort, and energy into recruiting.

Why are you so bent out of shape on missing out on one recruit. Newsflash. It has happened in the past, and I promise you it will happen in the future.

Not to get into some positional back and forth, but there is a difference between a sharpshooter and bucket-getters/creators, especially with this fanbase.

When many Indiana fans say "sharpshooter" they're thinking of a certain type of player. Guys like Matt Roth and Nick Zeisloft for example. Would I take those guys? Sure. But that's not the biggest need. I love Zeisloft in his two years at IU, but a Zeisloft is easy to guard when he's not surrounded by guys like Yogi, Thomas Bryant, Troy Williams, Robert Johnson and James Blackmon Jr.

The biggest need on this roster right now are guards/wings that are three-level scorers that can create, beat guys off the dribble and finish or create, and make things happen. Not spot up 3pt shooters and that is the distinction I was drawing.

Agree on the freshmen point, we have solid young players, we need proven guys to add to the roster at this point.

I agree, we need a 3-level scorer on the wing, so I’m not that disappointed with the lose of Ledlum. He was obviously a priority by the coaching staff, but from the film I saw, he didn’t look to be a difference maker. I’m sure there are others out there just as talented, and I’m confident we’ll land one soon.

He would have been a good player but it isn't like he some all American player. To me he looked more like a forward than a wing and I think we are pretty good inside. I think Reneau and Banks can handle the 4 and Water and Sparks at the 5

Not losing any sleep over Ledlum going another route. It was a hope he could help but there was no guarantee. Not sure there are any big time scorers/shooters out there with IU interest now but kids are still jumping in the portal daily.

I'd be just as happy if they added a defensive specialist. You can't have enough of them if your team struggles to score. It may be that IU will have to go with what they have now. Opportunity for some to shine that may be overlooked. If you can't score at a high level you need to dominate defensively and on the boards. Winning ugly is still winning.

I could do without all the freaking out after losing one recruit

Don't disagree, but it isn't just one, is it? It's just that some thought we were a lock and got whipsawed at the end. We've been in on several others who went elsewhere: Timberlake and Love, for example.

So, here's where we are:

1) Payton Sparks - Solid player for frontcourt depth. Great to have him. Probably no real competition for him, not that other teams wouldn't want him. If he was offered a spot at IU, he was coming.

2) Kel'el Ware - Huge wildcard. Considered one of the top players in portal, but that was based on his rankings out of high school, not his production at Oregon. Reputation for a low motor that led to his minutes being reduced significantly this past season. In his last game against WI in the NIT, he had 2 points on 1-6 shooting (0-3 from three), but had 6 boards, in 15 minutes. After January 1, he had two games that he scored 10 points, all the rest were single digits. Had three games in Feb, where he played 4, 2 and 4 minutes and didn't score. If the IU coaching staff can light a fire and resurrect his career, that will be critical. If not, he'll be one of the most frustrating players to play at IU.

IU's recruiters got off to a strong start landing XJ and JHS, who then helped land Malik. We thought they had a coup with Bates, but that didn't work out. They missed on a lot of players in the 2023 class. Was projected to be a four player class, but ended up with two (ranked #90, and #111). Currently no players committed for 2024, but still in on some big names. Need to cash in on Montverde pipeline here.

Still time to add some potential portal players, but desperately need wing scorers, which there seems to be a problem landing.

Despite some of the hype, I'd give the overall recruiting a C grade.

To me we only lost one portal player really went hard after.  Timberlake and Love never had an in home or campus visit, just a Zoom call.

For me I hope this year is an outlier to where we have to use the portal a lot. I hope we still build our program around high school recruits who will come here and develop. I want guys like Reneau, Banks, Gunn, Cupps and Newton to have the opportunity to come in here a be able to develop over the years. If you keep bringing portal guys over them it will stunt their growth. I still want us to build this way and sprinkle in guys like JHS who are super talented

Someone who gets it.

The momentum within this program the last 12 months, especially in recruiting, has been very meh. Reneau was a nice pick up but IU whiffed on several high priority targets this last year. Two of them committed to Maryland and Coen Carr who the staff inexplicably stopped recruiting after seeming like a strong lean went to Michigan State so I don't want to hear any bull about the B10 being a barricade.

Bottom line, the staff knew going into this last year it would be losing a ton of pieces. When all said and done, Indiana needs to replace 61 ppg from last year. They've added a backup piece in Sparks and a player in Ware with huge upside but one that isn't anywhere close to proven. Next years team needs proven commodities. It needed a Ledlum. It needed a Timberlake. It needed a whole bunch of juice. I have no doubt that IU will eventually fill the 3 remaining scholarships, but at what cost? Times running out to really bolster for next year and IU simply cannot afford another "rebuilding" year.

The problem that arises is we can't fully trust that those players won't transfer out.   We could spend a couple years developing them and then they decide the grass is greener somewhere else.   The portal has made it so that is hard to depend on anything past the upcoming season.

I personally will not be concerned about the HS recruits we don't land going forward. Get the ones that really want to be here or are sure-fire contributors their Freshman years. The portal is now priority one because: do you want a proven player with D1 experience or a freshman that has a chance to contribute? The reality of CBB is that you just can't rely on true freshmen as heavily anymore.

Only one of the top ten 2022 Freshman classes (Texas) made it past the sweet sixteen. I don't believe this is a fluke - it's going to be a trend.

I think you’re underplaying it. Woodson had an in-home with Timberlake and IU was considered the front runner for Love.

My rebuttal to that and a point @IU Scott made above would be if you keep burying your underclassmen under 5th year seniors from the portal, they will indeed transfer out...

I am one of the older generation who has seen the greatness of IU basketball. Part of the problem is our expectations are still the same as when we had one of the greatest coaches of all time.  College basketball world is a lot different and today's kids has way more options than the kids of the 70's and 80's did.  Recruiting was more regional back then and RMK could pretty much get the best players from Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. Today those kids will look at the whole country as possibilities over just their region.

If our expectations change, I’ll find something else to do with my free time. The expectations aren’t the problem. It’s the people starting at the top that were brought in that didn’t understand the expectations and they’ve done nothing but damage getting to those expectations over the last 25 years.  Everything off the court is in place to meet our expectations.  Now, sometimes things happen where we have to face reality, but that’s not the same as changing our expectations. If we’re not “expecting” to be the best and doing everything we can to sit on top of the mountain, then I’m out. I’m thinking that Woody agrees with this and is doing his part.

Semantics aside, the issue is scoring.  Preferrably via multiple "prongs".  I agree about catch & shoot, easily guardable shooting specialists.  I greatly appreciate what Miller Kopp brought, but there were times I wanted to pull my hair out when he'd go to "his corner" and wait for the ball - it felt like playing 4 against 5 at times.  Multi-dimensional scorers are ideal, for sure.  But, there will be times when we'll need to get 3's and currently only XJ and Gallo have shown any real ability to do that.

After or about May 1st last year, the following players were in the portal and still uncommitted:

  • Tyrese Hunter
  • Terrence Shannon
  • Grant Sherfield
  • Ricky Council Jr.
  • Keion Brooks
  • Keyontae Johnson
  • Courtney Ramey
  • Matthew Mayer
  • Kevin McCullar
  • Kendric Davis (on 4/29)
  • Isiaih Mosely
  • Norchad Omier (on 4/26)
  • Baylor Scheierman

stolen from another site, but still good to know

4 on 4 ... I mean they still had to guard him.

Unfortunately, Miller's effectiveness/importance, whatever... greatly diminished when XJ went out.

Have you noticed a trend with every coach at IU. Start out strong in recruiting then it starts to go down about the time the fans start turning on the coach.

Have you seen me turn on the coaching staff once in this thread?

Fans start turning on the coaching staff when said coaching staff start to miss important recruits and their results start to suffer.

You're terrible at this by the way. You haven't changed a lick from your old Rivals days.
