When: Tuesday, January 30th 7:00 PM EST

TV: BTN

Coach Fran McCaffery (273-184 at Iowa) brings his 12-8 Hawkeyes (4-5 in Big 10 play) into SSAH for a meeting with our Hoosiers. Iowa has lost 2 of their last 3, with both losses coming at home (Purdue, Maryland) then rebounding on the road to beat a woeful Michigan team.

The Hawkeyes are led by 6'9 senior transfer (Valparaiso) Ben Krikke, 6'4 senior Indianapolis Lawrence North alum Tony Perkins, and 6'7 junior sharpshooter Payton Sandfort. All 3 average around 15 ppg. Krikke is a tricky inside player who isn't very athletic, but makes up for it with experience and guile. Perkins is the motor that makes this team go. A 3 level threat who is most comfortable on the dribble drive or mid range game, he also leads the team in assists. Iowa was Perkins only P6 offer coming out of high school, and was snubbed by both IU and Purdue...But you can't measure heart :) . Sandfort is a major 3 point threat, hitting almost 40% of his team high 140 attempts.

6'10 freshman Owen Freeman is probably the leading candidate at this point for Big 10 freshman of the year. The 6 time Big 10 Freshman of the Week checks in at 11 ppg, and leads the team in rebounding. Another kid who's tricky around the basket, but also a better athlete than most think...He will outhustle you if you let him. Good offensive rebounder that registers 2 blocks per game as well.

6'5 sophomore Josh Dix rounds out the starting 5 and also can shoot the 3 ball shooting 47% for the year and an eye popping 10-17 in his last 5 games.

6'9 senior forward Patrick McCaffery, 6'6 freshman Pryce Sandfort (Payton's brother), and 6'8 freshman Ladji Dembele provide frontcourt depth, while 6'0 freshman and former Illinois Mr Basketball Brock Harding and 6'2 sophomore Dasante Bowen see the bevy of backcourt back-up minutes.

Iowa is pretty much like they always are. A superior offensive team (33rd in ORtg) while not playing much defense (225th in DRtg). Last year that formula got us thoroughly beaten at home versus the Hawkeyes. Hopefully Kel'el is back, but if not, I expect Payton Sparks to play a role. Guard the perimeter and go with our strengths inside should be the key to victory for IU.

Time to get back into the win column...

GO HOOSIERS!

Perkins was a recruiting miss by Archie Miller.  No kid that has the success he has had at a P6 school should be allowed to escape the state.

I dont particularly like the matchup.  IU is vulnerable in high scoring games.  Ultimately, as we saw with a couple of our non-conference 'cupcakes', the Hoosiers have trouble stopping a team that has scoring ability from all 5 positions.

Yes, Iowa has trouble on defense, but offensive efficiency is not IU's strength.  Have to avoid trading 3 for 2, or even 3 for 1 (with 50% FT shooting).

I still have nightmares about watching them bomb three after three on us at SSAH last year. From the stats @IUFLA posted, it doesn’t appear they are as potent from three this year which helps. I do share @5fouls concerns though about playing a high a scoring game.

Whatever position you take on our prospects for the rest of this season, we would all agree this is an important game.  Let’s stop the bleeding with a win on Tuesday.

Not to make excuses, but we weren't the only ones...

Like I said, you can't measure heart...

I saw their game with Maryland in Iowa City, and he was railing at his teammates in timeout huddles to carry it home...But, they fell short...But he held up his end of the bargain...

Oh.  I agree that Purdue, as well as schools like MSU and OSU that regularly recruit in our state, whiffed as well.  But when a kid in our backyard has Power 6 potential, there is no excuse not to put in the due diligence.  They either did not do that at all, or they did it and missed.  It's find to go out of state to get sure thing guys like JHS, Reneau, and Mgbako.  But, if you're going to look for upside in an unfinished product, do it with the kid from Indy instead of the kid from Atlanta.

Perkins, Barnhizer, Essegian, Goode, etc. all could be valuable rotation pieces on this IU team. Add that on top of losing most of the recent higher profile players from the state to Purdue (TKR, Furst, Smith, Loyer, Gilles), and it's no wonder why IU no longer has the personality of a 'Hoosier'.  And, say what you will, but that means more to this program's identify, probably more than any similar situation in the entire country.

i think we win this game.  that said, i think it is actually a HUGE one.  confidence can't be running high with the current losing streak.  we cannot lose this one at home.  absolutely cannot.  the guys should come out pumped, motivated, and confident that we will beat Iowa at home.  if we come out soft, unsure, etc., this season will be really really ugly.

Time to get on a roll and get this season back on track!! It starts Tuesday.

Win the next 2 at home

winnable game in the road at OSU and things can change in a hurry

Big resume building games with Wisky Northwestern and MSU at home and this team has a chance to salvage the season.

Slim margin or no margin for error but it is there.

The Illinois game showed they still had some fight.

Yup, the opportunity is still there. But as you said, the margin of error is razor thin.

Probably need to win 2 of those 3, if not all 3, against NW, MSU and Wisconsin.

But the chances are still there.

Win at OSU, vs. Wisconsin, MSU, Nebraska, NW, and no bad losses. Is that enough?  That NET still seems like it would be kind of low. It’s a fine needle to thread. Lets start the process Tuesday.

Yup, hopefully that would put us close. Might need a little, "they travel well" luck to make up for some metric short-comings.

But, it starts with one win on Tuesday.

Looking at last year when we played Iowa at home, we'd just come off of beating Purdue at Mackey, and were 3 games out, with 3 to play...

Kris Murray, Rebraca, Perkins, and Sandfort (who blew our crowd kisses) absolutely killed us scoring 81 of their 90 points. Perkins almost registered a triple double with 23 10 and 8...

The only guys that showed up for us were Trayce and Malik (10 points in 18 minutes)

Probably the most disappointing game we played last year

Unfortunately, probably not. At OSU is currently Quad 1 (#68), but may only be quad 2 by season end. OSU is slumping. Beating #58 IA, #61 NW and #62 NEB at home won't move the needle at this point. But they are all must wins, because a loss would be fatal.

There are just too many bubble teams that have much better resumes. For example, #52 S Carolina is 6-2 in Quad 1&2. #56 Boise ST is 7-5. #53 Providence is 5-6. #63 Miami is 6-4. #74 Kansas St. is 5-6. #75 Seton Hall is 5-7. These teams will likely pick up some more Quad 1&2 wins during the rest of the season.

IU is 2-8, 0-7 quad 1. Probably not enough quality wins left to pass so many other teams. There are four quad 1 opportunities remaining. There are 6 quad 2 games remaining. The 2018-19 team that missed the tournament had 6 quad 1 wins. The IU team that was the last at large team in 2021-22 finished at #38 in Kenpom.

They just need to win as many as possible and see where things shake out. But they probably need to win at Purdue to get attention by the committee.
