Lady Hoosiers lost today v. defending national champs #7 Stanford.  It was a very well played game.  IU just couldn't get the lead, but they don't panic.  Stanford very tall and deep.  Either of the these teams could make it to F4 and win it all.  Women's college basketball has gotten better and deeper.  It used to be just 1 or 2 teams dominated every year.  There are a number of teams that could win this year.

The Hoosiers were 88% from the line as a team coming in to today's game.  Imagine if you were shooting 80% from the line and your coach said you need to pick it up a little!  Unfortunately they were 14-20 today and lost by 3.

The progress that this program has made in the last few years is nothing short of amazing. They are now a legitimate national power. So proud of what they have done and what is still possible.

    I think so too.

The Girard-XJ matchup will be interesting...Girard is 15-20 from 3 this year...he scored over 4,500 points in high school, so he knows how to shoot...

The only thing I'm concerned about is how we shoot in that barn of a gym. I'm really starting to believe in the defensive effort that the entire team brings. I think we have enough pieces and enough coaching on the bench to excise those demons once and for all. And doing it in their house makes it that much sweeter.

  3. We have not changed anything that we have always done throughout this pandemic. I refused to miss time with my grandchildren or not celebrate their birthdays as usual. I finally caught covid a few weeks ago from my vaccinated wife. I should have, but didn't, see that coming. This was our personal choice. Everyone else should, in my opinion, be free to make theirs. If masks, isolation, and/or vaccination is that choice then I support them. Just don't impose your choices on me.

Sorry. I wasn't trying to point all that specifically at you. You have done a wonderful job trying to mediate this very possibly volatile and every changing thread. I agree we should read almost everything with a good deal of caution.

It has proven very difficult to find information because I don't know if you are aware but many of the major search engines and media companies like youtube/google etc push down search results and actually take down content that might not fit a certain agenda. I can type something into google and get no results even close to what I'm looking for but type the same thing into another search engine and up pops tons of relevant content.....same with youtube. I can search for a video and can't find it but then I'll search through a website and find the video....and it's on youtube...but the the youtube search function won't pull it...you have to click the direct link from the website. It's a lot of work and very concerning all the same. Sometimes, I think people have to go to using some less well known media outlets/reports is because they are the only ones left that are still hosting this information or reporting on these things.

I apologize I'm not trying to overwhelm people with tons of news stories. The first stories were all from "mainstream" media that have reported on how Australia has been using their troops to help crack down on their lockdowns and enforce quarantines....the last two articles were lesser media outlets that simply reported the news...and yes they did use troops and military vehicles to go in and round them up and take them to quarantine facilities. The police have regularly performed raids in Australia and people even had to download an app and take a picture within 15 minutes of notification to prove they were at where they said they were at during these lockdowns or have the authorities come. They've been using drones to monitor their citizens and the list goes on. This is Australia not the US...but Australia has long been seen as one of the freer countries in the world. There is certainly a debate that can be had over which is the correct course of action to prevent the spread of Covid and if these governmental policies are appropriate/legal/and in alignment of the values of a free society. I think the point is that this is very much going on in many places in the world and I think people here have questions if those policies will be brought here given the recent push for mandates, vaccine passports, etc. I do think we are in a dangerous media culture right now where we have hyper sensationalized article headers and click bait articles and certainly people on all sides of all sorts of issues pushing an agenda. Sadly there isn't one place you can just go and be assured it's just the plain facts with no spin/slant on the stories. I wish we still had those times...but just like the people in authority in Washington, those in all parts of the media have sold their soul for the almighty $$ and there isn't a whole lot of credibility anywhere. So we as the public just try to piece it all together and make sense from all different sides/places.

You have hit on a major problem in our ability to get information. Big tech (YouTube, Google, Facebook, etc.) are trying to control what people are allowed to see, read, and hear. This is the opposite of what is supposed to happen in a free society. YouTube routinely de-platforms contributors or demonetizes them. And, it's not just crackpots that this happens to. Some widely respected people whose opinion differs from what has become the accepted narrative have been targeted as well. Universities have been censoring speakers for some time and now it has filtered down to tech platforms and mainstream media. I want to hear all sides of an argument. I will analyze the information and make my own decision. I don't need anyone to tell me how or what I should think.

  5. The lockdowns that we had were a disaster for poor people. Amazon, Wal-Mart, the big box hardware stores, and the people invested in them flourished. People in the service industry, who often worked more than one job, saw their livelihood disappear. Add in the "us and them" mentality that permeates our society today and you have a confrontational, toxic environment. I haven't seen this country so divided along ideological lines since the Vietnam war. I watch physicist Brian Cox quite often. Brilliant man who frequently ends a talk about an issue with "of course I could be wrong". If we could recognize that we could be wrong, at least partiall in our opinions, maybe we could find common ground and better solutions more often. Convincing people to take an action is always better than forcing them.

I wonder sometimes if Woody is "letting the guys find their own way" a little bit, especially with cupcake games and letting them make more mistakes in order to teach them better in the "post mortem" after the game. Lander's immediate turnover in the SJ game would have gotten him yanked by Archie last year. Woody let him play thru it.

Agree we have tons of things to improve upon, but I think we're so much better this year mentally than last year(s).

I think Woodson's NBA pedigree plays a part in this. NBA guys generally have a pretty long leash and coaches let them play. I think he's trying to implement something similar here. A side benefit is that it takes pressure off players and builds confidence.

I work in public health, so will pretty much always come down on the public health side, which has admittedly pushed vaccination as the main thrust, and I haven’t been opposed to lockdowns in some limited capacity. But, as you said the damage done to those on the margins of society, and even to some who were doing okay before this is growing and should not be ignored.

There is a pandemic of loss resulting from our failed efforts to control the pandemic. I hope that we don’t continue to gloss over that. When we first started entertaining lockdowns ands closures, it was clear that our government needed to step up to protect those impacted by these policies. But, we have largely failed under both administrations compared to our European counterparts.

You can’t shut people down and then say you are all on your own. But this takes agreement by all of us to recognize that many people need help right now. And it takes people willing to give when they might not benefit.

For instance, we don’t have children and never will. But, if our government wants to give people money to support childcare or childcare-related expenses, then yes, please do that. It’s hard (and expensive) to raise kids. My wife and I are DINKS (double income no kids). We each make six figures and have our own goals, issues. But I damn sure know how important it is to support children and families with them. So yes, increase my taxes to give more money to working families with kids. We will all hopefully benefit from that years down the line.

Unfortunately, I see a lot of “me, me, me” during this pandemic. As in my freedoms outweigh your needs. That’s a recipe for failure, but I’m not sure there is a way around that in our current political climate.

My wife and I are retired and have four adult children, one with a severe mental illness, and nine grandchildren. About half of them have been seriously impacted by our response to this virus. We have been giving both financial and child care aid to our family. The response from the government, both federal and local, has been abysmal. Too much bureaucracy, too much time between need and aid, and too little urgency to resolve the problems once identified. For all the talk and posturing, neither political party has done much to help. I see the problems firsthand and, as well meaning as people of means often are, most don't truly understand what being without food or shelter is like. So many have lost hope and given up. This is not only sad on a human level, it is also dangerous.

I didn't think they were going to eject him, but once they did i agreed with it.

It wasn't the foul itself, it was how he yanked Galloway down while he was at the peak of his jump.

That's the equivalent of taking off the head of a defensiveness receiver in football. You just don't do that in basketball to a guy in mid-air. Really dirty play.

I'm always cautious to assign intent to an action. I thought it looked bad on the slow motion, close up replay. But in real time with to players going in different directions, I'm not sure he intended to pull Galloway down. Only he knows. I think it was the right call, just not sure if there was malicious intent.

Man, I am with you on just about everything pertaining to this covid discussion. And, I'm no more enamored with the current administration than I was with the last one, but be careful here and stay with argument about the policy. Attacking the policy makers is, to me at least, the wrong path to take.

I work in downtown Louisville.  Have done so for over 30 years.  This story estimates that there used to be approximately 65,00o workers downtown each day before the pandemic.  The estimate now is around $20,000.  The toll of this virus goes way beyond hospitalizations and deaths.  One subset of the population that has increased significantly downtown though, is the homeless.  I've gone from never, and I literally mean that, being asked for money walking to and from my parking garage and office (roughly one block) to getting asked 4-5 times every day when I leave work.  And, if I happen to leave the office for lunch, which I rarely do, it's even more.

    https://www.wdrb.com/news/report-downtown-louisville-workforce-cut-down-during-pandemic/article_90b3ba48-48e6-11ec-9e46-6be542220a96.html

"We used to have 65-67,000 employees down here every day, and those people shopped and they went to events, and now we've probably got like 20 (thousand), so that's a huge drop and we gotta change that," Bill Schrek, with Louisville Downtown Partnership, said.

This is a multifaceted problem. The people who die, whether from the virus or virus and other issues, are the front page news and the lead story on the evening news. But the collateral damage is less obvious. Just as devastating to those who experience it, but never going to be talked about to a significant extent. We want a linear solution and we have decided that the lockdown and the vaccine is it. We ignore everything else. The path we have chosen is the most divisive of all possible options. Promote the vaccine and the risk/benefit analysis and let people take responsibility for their own lives. The damage we have done to people on the margins of society is unconscionable. It doesn't have to be this way. I'm in the high risk age group, had covid, and recovered fairly quickly without lingering effects. Not everyone will have the same outcome, I understand that. I tell whoever asks that they should make the best, most comfortable decision for themselves. However, to lose sight of the suffering of the people who lost jobs, housing, and any chance to come out of this whole is just plain wrong.

We played hard last year too....the difference is simply winning and losing. Honestly we didn't really close out either game well....with the exception of getting the W. We didn't do much as far as getting stops the last couple minutes and we didn't hit free throws...we didn't take a 2-4 pt lead and stretch it to 8-10.....the result was great...and we fought hard and didn't give up...but we did that last year....the negativity comes from losing those games...from the stress/pressure under a coach under fire etc. I don't see anything necessarily vastly different so far this year from last...just the results have gone our way....after all we had had some very toughly contested games under Archie against Illinois/FSU etc that we never gave up and just didn't go our way. The vibe can easily change....if both those games turn on a make by both opposing teams you don't think the vibe with the team would be just like last year? I'm not ready to say this particular team has turned a corner or has developed anything different between the ears yet...it's going to take a few years under Woody to build that culture and develop those winning attitudes imo.

I agree with most of what you said there. I think the biggest difference going forward is the personality of CMW. I don't think you can underestimate the difference that can make when things don't go well on the court. CMW seems to have a better understanding of how to handle the team and that will lead to the culture change we have needed. Of course, as always, I could be completely wrong.

    I'll just say this...

I'd much rather haggle about back-up point guards than why we blew a 14 point lead and lost...

Like a breath of fresh air from somebody that uses Scope :D

Absolutely. We are way beyond where we were last year. The vibe of this team is better in every way. Nobody panicked when we lost the lead. They just went back to work and made game winning plays. I'll take that every time.

Is anybody else reporting this? (And not just reporting on the reporting?) I saw Alex Berenson and am immediately skeptical. Maybe take that with a grain of salt. He has have a pretty large history for misinterpreting studies…he’s done it a lot. He was also banned from twitter for spreading false information (proven false fwiw) about vaccines in Israel.

I have a feeling in a few days we’ll see why he’s misinterpreting this information. I guess we’ll see.

At this point, I take everything with a huge grain of salt. I recently read "Bad Pharma" by Ben Goldacre. He documents the shady things that go on in the pharmaceutical industry. It's important to remember that drugs are an industry meant to make a profit. If there is no money in a rare disease there won't likely be research in a treatment. Pfizer has been caught and fined for doing what is alleged in this article. Are they guilty this time? Who knows, but the possibility shouldn't be dismissed without further investigation. I doubt that we will hear anything from official sources concerning issues that would undermine the vaccine in the public eye. I am not anti-vaccine. I believe everyone who wants it should get it. I am against mandates and taking the choice away from the individual. I want to know everything that was found during the trials so that I can make my decision with everything on the table. I don't think we currently have that quality of information.

  14. Transparency is the only way people can make informed decisions. That went out the window once covid was politicized. Politicians across the board have worked in the gray area of integrity for so long I doubt they are capable of putting the public interest ahead of their own.

On a side note, I truly appreciate this thread and the adult conversation that takes place here. This is one of the few places where differing opinions can be shared and discussed in a civil manner. Thank you everyone!

  15. This team needs a complete reset. Find out who wants to be here and send everyone else packing. We need some coaching changes and to hit the portal hard in the off season. Emphasis should be on both lines. It starts up front and if we can't win there, nothing else will matter much. Next year should be a referendum on whether or not CTA is the guy to lead this program. I'm not saying we should be competing for conference championships, but we should be as good as Iowa or MSU.

  16. I don't want to pile on but something went seriously wrong this season. Given what we have seen, I have to believe there are some internal problems that LEO won't fix. There was momentum to build on and now that appears to be completely gone. Accountability starts at the top. We are about to find out what kind of leader CTA is.
