I don't know. I'm not a part of the staff. I'm just guessing on what went down. I'm shocked Joey still wants to play to be honest.

Some of it could be what he wants to study now that he has a masters in hand.  Some of it could be juggling those studies with new practice methods.  Some could be what you were saying, role, style, etc.  I think with a kid like this, all signs point towards using basketball to get the most out of academic endeavors.  I enjoyed his game and will miss seeing him on the court in an IU uniform.

Just looked it up, Oates literally recruited over him by accepting a Spring 2021 PF as well as two transfers. Before this kid decommitted, Bama was 2 scholarships over the limit after accepting 3 players this Spring.

Wow!  I guess that is one way to recruit.  That would stink for the kids involved.  Seems like an athletic player who can help a team.

    Little detective work.

Woody worked with World Wide Wes and Kenny Payne in New York.

Kenny Payne was an assistant at Oregon.  Yasir Rosemond overlapped with Payne at Oregon.  Payne and Wes are tight.

Connecting the dots.  Sounds like Woody talked with Wes and Payne as far as getting a guy in here who is good at relationships.  Rosemond obviously came out of that.

It is real important to get an assistant who connects with kids and has the ability to teach and develop.  Looks like two individuals who are well respected in basketball circles helped out their great friend.  What an important hire and angood one.

Without any details or context that is a big allegation to make.

But this post made me think: were the coaches being told not to go after the job specifically IU alumni? Smart, Fife, Alford, etc. Thus, being more of a strategy to get the alumni base behind one candidate rather than divide interests?

Hypothetically if somebody like Zeke told Beard not to go after the IU job, wouldn't Beard just tell him to F off?

Question-  Why would the individual who put out the email be the only one who knows this?  Got to ask oneself this question.  What makes him so privileged?  So many sources in the game and that is the one.

It could be HARMFUL to create internet rumors.  Seems that person creates this a bunch throughout the years.  No doubt, he probably hears some accurate info, and has shared that.  But, one has to also look at the track record.  And, only reason why I am saying this is because rumors can create toxicity.

The sad thing is, if he’s on the staff and kept in line, no one will be convinced if recruiting improves significantly. Any legit recruiting success this staff has will be tainted with suspicion

Duke just landed another 5 star last week to their stellar class.  I'm sure the nation, majority are not saying ....is that like Corey M recruitment...is thatvlike Zion's recruitment?  Just saying.

And, no, I don't advocate for cheating in any way.

We don't know the whole story, we don't.  Sometimes there is more to it or not.

Was he not on tape saying he would do whatever it took....we aren’t twisting words...we are taking the guy at his word. He will pay kids to land them. He doesn’t care which school he works for he is a hired gun because if he lands kids he will get a head coaching job. What part of that are we wrong about?! How are we tarnishing someone who admitted to trying to cheat? I love how people try to twist it and make the good guys the bad guys. For the record I’m against the hire. If he is hired we better keep him in line. No room for an f up. He does and we go down for it...I’m done with this program. It’s like buying a pit bull that has bit someone before but maybe that person didn’t raise it well..and then letting your kid play with it. Maybe it won’t bite...and some people are cool with it...but my child (IU) in isn’t worth it. Lots of good dogs out there. Sure they could bite too but I’ll take my chance with one of those even if it isn’t as good at protecting my house.

We all are still fans...we should quit attacking each other and if we disagree focus on the what was said and not take personal shots because someone’s values.

There is a reason why, if this is the hire, he is being hired.  This coaching staff is already elite with three guys who are considered elite recruiters.  I know Thad is not the one going out there, but he has connections.  Fife and Hunter are known proven recruiters.  I'm pretty sure they are stacked there, and this new, possible assistant has made it through the many possibilities because he is being recommended.  The guy must have the it factor and I'm looking forward to learning more about it.  Coach Woodson didn't take over to set the program back, he is moving it forward with the culture the former players want.  I'm sure they did their homework.

I think being holier  than though is a compliment and not something to be criticized for.

Out of curiosity, Is being holier than now tarnishing a potential hires name when have no idea what actually happened and what IU is doing and why they value him?  The guy was never convicted or proven guilty.  Unfortunately, alot of good people, good human beings, were mentioned in those reports.  And, unfortunately, some of the those who should be mentioned were probably not.

I don't think anyone deserves the treatment that some get.

I don't remember that, but I'll take your word for it...

Chuck Martin was also in one of the articles about FBI scandal.

Tom O:  Not sure where the exact message is, but found this quickly in an article

“This is from Lasko to Fenny,” Schachter said, reading the text to Kaplan. “‘Fenny, I am in Indiana and Coach Ostrom asked me for an update. They are super willing to do what it takes to recruit Silvio. Is that something of interest for us?’”

Tom Ostrom, the associate head coach at Indiana, is in his second season with the Hoosiers.

So from reading about what was happening, these "agent runners" were giving money to assistant coaches and hoping to have these assistant coaches funnel kids they'd recruited to certain agents...Matt Norlander (CBS) covered the trial and tweeted this about Roseland...

So while he technically didn't do anything wrong, the intent was clearly there... And I'm shocked an SEC team would have "resources to land recruits" in place 😯

I guess I'm ok with it...I think Woody and Matta are smart enough to navigate ever changing recruiting scenery without landing us in trouble...

Wasn't Tom O. Onna text message exchange the FBI had with a similar statement?  This while at IU recruiting a kid out of one of the Florida academy?  It's a vague statement and can mean many things.  Sometimes, playing time, sometimes academic support, etc. Growing up in a family of lawyers, I will beleive if something came out of it, like being proven guilty.

Now, I know we will all have different perspectives depending on the viewpoint we want.  Thinking about it objectively, I do not think IU would do anything damaging at this point.  This coach seems like a very likable, standup, mentor and teacher.  I support that.

The fact that coach Knight let him be part of the program should tell us all we need to know. Knight was notoriously hard on rule breakers.

If there is a school that makes sure it is playing by the book, its IU.  While UNC pays millions to get out of scandals, Kansas gives extended contracts.....IU turns itself in.

They do their homework.  And, I trust they make the correct hires within this space.

See above.  Had he had sufficient pull with talent the agents wanted, he would have gotten stung in the 2017 FBI investigation.  It's not that he didn't want to be crooked...he simply didn't have the goods at the time.

I'm simply not interested.  Hope Woodson agrees with me.

Many times an assistant is a product of their environment and direction of their head coach.  Assistants sometimes take the blame.  Now, Norm Ellenberger was a pretty good assistant for Coach Knight and I'm sure he was different at IU than before.  Just one example.

The whole thing sounds sleazy as hell to me.

If I'm guessing, which I am, one of Coach's connections told him this is a guy that will help the program.  Doing a little research, he seems like a player development guru, who has a dynamic personality, and can recruit.  Now, if his nephew wants to be around him - how is that sleazy?

And, I'm pretty sure there is enough talent on the roster and in the portal to compete next year.

Maybe I am just biased by the feedback I was hearing on the day he was announced, but it was like 80-20 negative.

Don't know - respect the heck out of your work.  But the negative will tweet and post, the positive you won't hear from...same with most situations like that.  Negative always feels more and emotional.

But, I just wish we, IU nation, move forward with positivity as it would be great with momentum and exposure.

Wonder how UNC is taking the news?  I havent followed it.

I do not think so. I think it was a very mixed reaction.

Heck, just look at our thread. It was more "nay" than "yay" with a smidgen of "let's see".

Mixed reaction, but the way the media is making it seem like everyone.

The way I see it, there is what 1,000 members maybe of this board?  That's less than my graduating high school class.  Maybe a small faction kept on posting dislike.  Its not the entire fan base.  Media is beating on an old narrative.

Ah, I see your point. You are looking at it from the angle of recruiting Xavier.

I think that's an easier sell. It would be honest to tell him he bring an athleticism and skill set that nobody else on the roster has to offer. (Caveat: if Armaan returns and stays on his trajectory of improving).

Xavier would be awesome for the new offense.  Got to think some of the "robotics" and over thinking that challenged Rob will be fixed.  Kid has ability, likeability and talent as well.
