Honestly, there is no obvious move that the Big Ten could do to counter an addition of Texas to SEC. That is huge.

The best bet is to wait for Texas to destroy the SEC from the inside :), then pick up some of the more prestigious SEC schools: Texas A&M, Florida, Vanderbilt, Missouri, ...

Texas is a big money maker with the brand in there region and being football crazy.  But, you get a UCLA/USC those are global brands.  UCLA might not pack the stands and LA might not be UCLA Crazy, but globally they are huge.  The BigTen and Pac has always had a relationship and now it is time maybe to merge. The tv dollars will pay for the travel expenses.

  2. Through a casual discussion, a neighbor said he saw on twitter a rumor that Fox sports is pushing Colorado, UCLA, USC and one other I can't rember to the Big10.  Now that would be a power play over the SEC.

Personally, I love locking down the middle strip of the country and brand the heck out of it.  TV dollars will be huge!  Get Kansas, Pittsburgh, Missouri.  Delany really wanted UNC and there were rumblings back in the day.

Now, Notre Dame.....could a new commissioner make that happen.  ND was listening for all sports except football, but now who knows where they are with the independent thing.

Now only in UofChicago can bring back D1.

Of course, you don't know that he didn't have other opportunities. The way the IU program has performed in the last 6-7 years, and if you believe the backstories that ex-players are the ones that pushed this hire now, maybe he had it in his back pocket that he wanted the IU job all along and was willing to bide his time.

He has mentioned that he wanted past jobs, but couldn't get out of contacts.  It was a big deal what the Knicks did for him.

Good question...He didn't have championship type success in the NBA, and, as you said, I don't watch much of it, so I didn't really know...but when the rumors got more serious, I looked up his coaching record and thought, "Hey, Woody can really coach!:

The success he had with the Hawks and Knicks surprised me, especially comparing what had gone on before, and what went on after with both franchises...

All I know is, seeing how things are going, I sure am glad Brad Stevens likes Boston so much...

Agree.  Mike Woodson is a special coach and person.

How is it that every kid knows who Mike Woodson is but us fans (we knew the player but not the coach) didn't. Myself included. I've always thought of him as a good assistant coach but nothing special...and really didn't know if kids today in 2020 could relate and would recognize Coach Woodson and his value. Boy was I wrong and it seems so was a good majority of our board. Is it just us Indiana folks don't keep up with the NBA because we are just such passionate HS and College fans or is there something else to all this? How is he more recognizable amongst outsiders than he is to us insiders?

Kids know the NBA. They do. They study and want to be it.  The Knicks are cool, the old Hawks were as well.  IU fans, or more specifically those who post on boards..know Indiana kids, and have favorites based on that.  There is an emotional attachment to it.  It's the movie Hoosiers.  Here in Chicago, when I asked, kids knew who Mike Woodson was.

  6. So far recruits being recruited and those who have committed all commented about how everyone knows Mike Woodson.  Today, Durr said, "And, coach Woodson, obviously evernody knows about him."  Bates and others had similar responses.

Got to bring it up as some debated when I brought up kids know who he is.  Mike Woodson is going to be a rock star at IU.  Hopefully, fans are buying in, because IU is trending upward.

From what i'm being told. Hunter started his crap with Woodson that he did with Archie and was shown the door. "Woodson's not hear to play locker room games, things will be dealt with quickly", quote.

Good tidbit - got to live the culture you want.  That and the desire to get someone that will change shots at the rim.  Timing and attitude is everything.

In my lifetime I would say the best point guards I have seen at IU are.

    1) IT.

    2) Buckner.

    3) Smart.

    4) Yogi.

    5) Lewis

Good list- some underappreciated pgs, but maybe not on that list, Strickland, Calloway, Jim Thomas.  Can't forget Coverdale as that was the last to lead a final 4 team.

You are missing that he can shoot extremely well. He has the x factor that this team has missed for a long time. We are recruiting athletes and if those athletes can shoot then all will be well if not going to be the same old story. UK this year was loaded with fast guards, big guards, great 5 star NBA ready talent and none could shoot. That formula only works if you have some guys to spread the floor to allow that speed to be utilized.

Have a feeling IU has found some help in that area in the past few weeks, and have a feeling that a green light of confidence will improve the over thinking of some of our able shooters.  And, have a feeling we will be getting a bunch more - scholarships given out is proving that.  There is no doubt this staff wants to shoot the three and they also want to play fast and furious.  They are going after their players.

Hope the best for the kid, any kid, got to think this staff is connected and talented.  There system is going to be different and fun.

Wow....i hope this isn't a piss poor decision on IU'S part...Purdue is cleaning the state up of quality players...i dont care how good iu gets it is going to be tough playing at PU for years to come with all the State kids going there.

I get this player is a fan favorite.  But,

Roberts goes to Cincinnati- doesn't sound like they offered.

Fife has been recruiting midwest, doesn't look like MSU or when he went to IU offered.

Am I missing something?  IU has passed out some scholarship offers in the last few weeks.  Some pg they are going after are jet fast.  We have a stable of guards, solidified within the past few weeks.

What am I missing, except he is a fan favorite?  Asking, not knowing.  And, I trust the evaluation of the entire staff.

I think this worked out really well across the board.  Again, I give credit to Dolson for handling the situation with aplomb.  He kept Mike on after Archie’s dismissal and kudos to Mike for helping to hold down the fort and to allow for a great transition to Coach Woodson.

From everything we’ve read, Mike kept communication going with potential recruits to keep the relationships going and to allow for continuity.   Also, he obviously helped with existing players.

At the same time, Coach Woodson needs to have the staff he is comfortable with, yet they still found a role for Roberts.  So, I give Dolson, Matta, and others credit for all of that.

But then you can’t blame Roberts for going to Cincinnati.  That’s a good job with a head man he has a good relationship with.

I wish Roberts well.  He is a loyal IU soldier and really helped the program out through a tough period. That says a lot for his character.

Good stuff!  My mind wonders if there will be more movement with some of the admin roles that carried over.  Would be interesting to see if they fill this role and with who.

You are correct.  There is one who has not spoken publicly.  But, shouldn't he have enough info by now, so that if wanted to leave IU, he would have already been in the portal?  Spots are filling up across the country.  A player waits too long and there won't be many good options left.

He also has been featured in all the videos, images, etc by iubb

This is where this whole process becomes uncomfortable to me.  I realize that as we add players and someone's projected playing time changes, it could cause a player to rethink his situation.  You simply can't play 13 people extended minutes.  But, I hope that if any of the remaining players do leave, it's for a better opportunity.  I hope they aren't leaving because they don't feel wanted any longer.

It's the choice of the player there, especially under IU's code.  But, either you compete for your share or you find somewhere else that would provide it for you.

Agree. I actually think lack of athleticism has been a much larger issue the last 4 years than having too many athletes. Who are all of these ultra-athletes that IU has had?

Phinisee isn't that athletic, Galloway isn't, Leal isn't, Hunter isn't, Race isn't, Durham isn't, etc., etc. IU hasn't had a super athletic wing since maybe Troy Williams.

I'm not sure where this narrative I've seen posted a lot recently came from that IU needs "basketball players not athletes"? We haven't been a very athletic team in about 5 years when we had Bryant and OG.

Totally agree!  Imagine some of the athletes who can play basketball would do?  We are seeing it a Baylor, Michigan, etc.  Just naming two.  Cause havoc on D and be lightning on O.

I understand the concept of the most athletic kids being good for IU but haven't we learned from this mistake the past 4-6 yrs?  Athleticism has not gotten this IU team to the dance in the last 4 yrs and that is with recruiting the States best talent.  Sometimes we need to not worry about size and defensive mismatches but more so on if the kid can put the dang ball through the hoop from 10-18 ft away.  So tired of our so called athleticism shooting brick after brick and even getting burnt on the defensive side of the ball due to lack of WANT.  When was the last time or how many times per game did our athletic wings or guards dunk on the opposition at will?  Not very often at this level so you must have a jump shot to be successful.  I want more high basketball IQ players at this point over athleticism as I seen enough broke shots to last me a lifetime.  I'm talking about a Braden Smith type player who has the IQ I convey and can light you up off any bounce he takes or pass to an open teammate for an assist.  When is the last time IU had that kind of player?

Here what you are saying, but I would make the argument that IU has not gotten the most athletic kids.  Trayce is the exception.  Even Romeo was dubbed as a can't miss prospect, but not an elite athlete.  Coach Miller went after athletes, many didn't come, probably because of style, etc.

I really hate seeing another player leave and I won’t speculate publicly but I will say publicly that I hope it isn’t brooks coming in if there is movement

Brooks is an interesting kid, from looking outside the kid wanted to be a hoosier.  Dad, had other thoughts and tidbits suggest Shilling didn't help much there.  Second chance?  New life brings a new game - not saying dame player but look at past UK transfers that took off at Michigan, UCLA and others.  Those two programs are not one ball one player programs.  Brooks can bring a new dynamic on Defense.

And, I would bet roster movement doesn't end there.  Possible scholarship to walk-on?  Possible graduation?  Possible transfer? New demands, new style and a world portal for recruiting has opened up.  Competition changes perspectives.

I didn't say he was one of the best players in the Big Ten...

As you said, he was a good player and he did a lot of little things on the court.  Coach Woodson watched a ton of film on him and sees someone that is going to help.  NW had an interesting team last year and Miller is going to benifit by the new style and the athleticism around him.  With that being said, he is a good athlete who is getting better.

Hope he is going to surprise some.

  19. Excellent addition!  This kid can do it all, and in a solid role will be a great addition.  Being around NW, he has the capabilities of more.  Reading some of the comments about rebounding, he was asked to do it as much and within their system.  With IU'S new offense and Johnson and others ability to drive, more will open up for him.  Awesome get
