It’s not so much of the surprise factor but it moves the needle from around the combine time/post Justin fields trade when it seemed the Bears were “almost certainly” going to take Caleb Williams with the #1 pick, to now that he visited the Bears and won’t go to another team it seems to be the Bears are “100%” taking him #1.

Caleb didn’t do his medicals at the combine, which means with him not going anywhere else to visit, the Bears are the only team that has them. Bears must have told Caleb they are taking him with the first pick or it would have been in his best interest and the Bears if he visited Washington/New England if there was a chance they were going to trade down for a different QB. I believe Caleb said he was planning on visiting Washington at the combine as well.

I’m ready for the draft! Bear down!!

GM Ryan Poles to me is pushing the right buttons.  I’ve always agreed with how he’s handling the QB situation.

Haven’t agreed with every single thing he does but this is a big picture issue and in that sense I like how he’s building the team.   The coach is meh to me but the roster is going to be so much better that his record will improve drastically.

You get the hardest thing to find in a QB and my bet in future years is they go hard on defense.  Meaning, over the next several years, sky is the limit.  Minnesota has zero hope for the future as of today.   Detroit is good with an excellent coach.  But the Bears talent influx that will be coming is going to be huge.  Upside is there.

    That's great and all...

Rick went 3-48 as a HC in D1 and NFL. This was also mentioned about RV.... "Additionally, all but one of the black players on the football team had protested against the unequal treatment of African-American student athletes within the program.

RV was part of the Colts staff from 1984-90 (before the season he was the interim)--- the Colts were 38-57 in those seasons... then 1-15 in 1991 when he was interim HC and DC. Sooo 39-72 during his tenure with the Colts.

1995- CLE DC- Cleveland went 5-11

The Saints from 96-05- Saints record during that time-- 53-97

Rams in 06-08- Rams record-- 13-35

Those numbers are so consistent that it’s not a coincidence.  Whenever I hear his name, the picture you just displayed is top of mind for me.

I added my key word. Many times the opposing teams PG is the leader of the team (and an upperclassman) so it's imperative whomever we bring in is a good/great defender. Getting torched on defense was the biggest issue with our guard play, then the lack of shooting.

Agree.  A point guard who can keep the ball in front of him on D can really set the whole defense.  Yes, shooting is an issue but, man, our defense was worse.  Didn’t we give up close to 90 to Wisconsin?  That needs corrected.

The other issue is basketball IQ.  For a tradition like ours, we need to really upgrade that as well.   IMO

I’d rather have Bradshaw anyways tbh

💯    I think the ideal fit is a high upside younger player.  Someone who is developing and can protect the paint off the bench and be a starter in a future year.   The kid from Duke also comes to mind.   A guy who is ok with coming off the bench but growing in future years so we can build continuity.

I think Woody can see himself in a handoff role where he can sell his tenure as a success if he puts us in a good position for the future.   Save face and help the program.

Guys... getting Carlyle and Tucker would be fantastic. They seem like they'll be on college campuses for two more years.

I mean, and for good reason, we are frustrated as heck with Woodson not bringing in enough guards/wings/and youth... those two would suffice all that.

Also... it's possible SO Carlyle > FR Boogie Fland

I like your approach. People may not be happy but there’s no tanking in college.  We need to get ourselves in the best position possible with the roster.  Always root for success no matter how pissed off people are.  It’s not about the ego of being right.  It’s for the success of the program and school.  I don’t mean to come across as a lecture to others (not you since I am with you) but giving my personal opinion.

if we can get two of Rice, Carlyle or Perkins and Hickman that is a good haul.

I honestly want 3.  We will see.  Carlyle or Rice as a downhill lead guard with wiggle.  Not great shooters, not yet anyway, but they are dynamic in a way we have lacked.   They are also younger so we aren’t just adding one year guys.

Hickman as a shooter and savvy guy.

Perkins as a combo guard.  Love his toughness.

Galloway as a sixth man.  With our versatility he could honestly swap in for a lot of guys because other guys can move around.

Humrichrous is someone who interests me big time as a 6’9 shooter.

Cupps to redshirt and enjoy five years of that crazy NIL he’s tapping into.   I think he can develop.  But he needs time.

Bring in more talented, proven guys a la Cignetti.   If you perform there will be minutes.  It doesn’t matter who else is here .. if you play well, you will get good minutes.

That could be a massively improved team.

I don't know what station that is. I don't watch any of that s*** Scott. Only sports talk I would/still listen to AT ALL... Pat and PTI. And both of those are rare.

Agree.  Talking heads are maddening.  We get and share more info here.  Pat has a great show but omg it’s way too long and hard to find the segments you care about so I don’t usually bother unless my YouTube feed spoon feeds me a short segment.  But he’s very talented and comes across incredibly well IMO

IU gave some BS excuse. I’m guessing they’re slow playing him to see if they get in a good spot with any other guards during the dead period.

I sure hope we are taking two ball handling guards.  If you only bring in one and he gets hurt, it’s 2024 again. Surely they learned from that.  Let’s say Perkins is one.  He could even easily play with Walker at times.  We have seven spots. Let’s wait and see because this is so obvious that it’s hard to believe they wouldn’t get that.

Appreciate the reply. I feel like it probably depends on the age of the Purdue fan tbh. For me, I haven’t seen what you’re referring to but I’m also in my 30’s and wasn’t around when IU was in the midst of their heyday. I think both fanbases have their share of crazies and their share of level-headed fans.

Fair enough but I am not sure I have ever seen a Purdue fan accept the five banners.  Usually some excuse.

When you see this board compliment the hell out of Painter on a regular basis or give a sober assessment of the lousy season IU just had, ask yourself if Purdue fans would do that because I’ve never seen evidence of it except for a super minority.

Curious if you could expand on the “typically have a huge chip on their shoulders and live in an alternate reality” comment.  I think myself and my friends that are Purdue fans always expect the worst and are usually pretty level-headed but maybe you’ve had different experiences.

When IU is up and Purdue is down, IU gets almost no credit from Purdue fans.  Purdue gets very defensive, makes excuses, and creates conspiracy theories.  The way this board is a love best for Painter would never ever happen in a million years at your end.   Purdue can’t even handle the five banners.

Even when Purdue is good, as an example, when Edey runs over somebody who is stationary, or bear hugs with both arms and isn’t called, Purdue fans laughably defend the situation even when there’s video evidence.  It’s dysfunctional.  Just own it like IU fans do.  “Yeah Edey gets away with those calls.  Deal with it.  He’s huge and refs don’t have any idea how to deal with him.”

The difference is IU fans have self esteem.  I’ve enjoyed three titles.  Even if I never see another, I have got 3.

  11. Bad coach, good coach, either way, let’s build the roster and program for more than one year and get us on track.  Let’s fix 2025 recruiting and get competitive.  It does no good to tank.  We are in an embarrassing state right with very little sitting here today for the future especially looking out to 2025-2026.   Let’s hope they recruit their asses off, whether it’s about money or whatever for this year and beyond.

Hopefully we all agree with that.  Get the roster normalized and build a roster for college basketball.

He told them they'd be sorry...

I love that kid.  I would put him on my all time 13 man team.  You’ve got a few years on me but I was in early elementary school in 1975 and that’s the first team I remember.  That gives me, what, 49 years???

I wish I could have seen some of the guys you saw in the preceding years.  But in 49 years, I’m finding a spot for TJD on my 13 man roster.  I’m taking about my favorites.  Some combination of good and attitude leading them to be on my list.

The way he stood up for the program and led was admirable in a way that a lot of guys never had to do.

  13. Matt Painter is an admirable guy who plays a helluva style of basketball and runs an outstanding system for COLLEGE basketball.   Sadly we once took Todd Leary over Painter as a player.

The difference between IU and PU is that we are far more realistic in our assessments.  PU fans typically have a huge chip on their shoulders and live in an alternate reality.   The amount of post hoc rationalizations that come out of them is astounding, whereas IU fans will give a far more realistic assessment whether it hurts to say or not.

When IU is good and Purdue isn’t, the amount of total BS that comes out of that place is loathsome.
