  1. And I should be clear when I say “hissy fit” I’m talking about the politicians and paid hacks on social media. Not targeting anyone here. I know I disagree on this topic with several on here, but respect them too much to trash them like that. I’m just exhausted by all the posturing and outrage on social media. To me, it’s a carrot and a stick thing. Vaccinations are for the greater good of society. They work better with more people vaccinated. If people don’t want to get vaccinated, then fine. But there may be repercussions and restrictions. If people want to participate fully in society, then get vaccinated. I keep saying this. I didn’t want a dozen vaccines in boot camp that I knew I wouldn’t need, but I got them. I have had and do have some reservations about the topic when it comes to race. There are serious historical issues to consider with Tusjkeegee, etc. But not enough reservations in my mind to exclude an entire race of people from being vaccinated. One thing to note, I have around 50 employees and faculty I’m responsible for. One of them is unvaccinated. She happens to be black. We have discussed this multiple times and she and I don’t agree on the topic. However, I did help her get her medical exemption and will help her navigate policy changes moving forward. I’m honestly just sick of arguing about it. If people don’t want to wear masks/get vaccinated, fine. But I have very little to no sympathy for their complaining and arguing about it. I’m more concerned about over 1,500 Americans dying every day from COVID when we couldn’t have been largely past this.
  2. Went to see Hadestown on Broadway last night and it was easy to enter by showing vaccination status by phone or card. Didn’t slow anything down and it was nice to see a show again. Had dinner beforehand and same deal. Flash your ID and vax status and enjoy. Felt no different than showing your ID to enter a bar. As far as mandates go, nothing new for the US. We’ve done this before, beginning with Washington making troops getting vaccinated. Also don’t recall throwing a hissy fit when I had to get them in school or the military, but we are now a hissy fit society.
  3. Bolded the most important part. As far as letting the virus “dominate life,” I don’t. I’m not going to cry if I have to wear a mask somewhere or show my vaccine status. I’ve never had to wear a mask before, but it’s fine. As far as vaccine status goes, I’ve (or my parents) have dealt with that for a good part of my life. Elementary school and the military required tons of vaccines. I’ve always accepted that as a part of participating in society. I do have a problem with accepting 1,500 preventable deaths each day from COVID. Especially since so many people had assured me that this would all be over after the inauguration. I have an uncle who was willing to bet his life on it. I hope it doesn’t come to that, but as the saying goes, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.” It is only a three areas I believe, but it’s nice to have some good news for once instead of doom and gloom.
  4. I recall even his mother posting on Twitter about the IU visit. That’s a good sign when Mom is happy!
  5. Chances of a Breakthrough Infection This is one reason why I support and encourage vaccines.
  6. Please give that young man hearty birthday wishes from HSN!
  7. And then there are people like us who are both vegetarian, chose not to have kids, and ride public transportation. Those three are HUGE reductions in our carbon footprint. We have flown twice in the last three years and live in a tiny 500 sq ft apartment. We also recycle and drop off our compost weekly.
  8. Ida rainfall dumped over 7 inches on NYC. Subways are still closed down until mid-day today. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/02/nyregion/nyc-subway-transit-updates.html The video in this link is bonkers. I’ve seen rain and flooding in the subway before, but not like this.
  9. I have some from my NAvy days thaI I kind of regret. But, I also have one that I got recently after our rescue dachshund Greta (my name for her was “Little G”) passed. I always look down at the arm now and think good thoughts of her. Pic attached, my wife also got a small g on her wrist. Will most likely get a cursive font that says Chloe on my other forearm for our dog Chloe who passed in June.
  10. Nice haul! I just pickled the last of our habaneros and jalapenos this morning.
  11. Ha, nope they are going to ride it out. I did set up our camera to see how they were doing. So far so good! I don’t think Brooklyn was getting much besides a good soaking and strong winds.
  12. Thank you, yep, we are here in MD for a couple of weeks. I did have to drive up to CT for a small (outdoor) pool party at my bosses house today (drove up last night and spent the night in our apt) and everyone is preparing. After the party, I drove straight thru to get back to MD though as I didn’t want to be caught in any of the storm. Apparetnly there was a big concert in Central Park this afternoon and they made everyone leave b/c of the weather. I didn’t have a drop of rain on my drive back to MD.
  13. Did anyone watch Woodstock 99 documentary? I had forgot what a sh#tshow that was. Also just finished White Lotus, which was very good.
  14. Since we are heading to Maryland for a couple of weeks, I installed a drip irrigation system for our terrace today. Used main 1/2” black tubing to blend in with the railing and then got a kit with transfer barbs, smaller drip lines, and plugs. Only took me a couple hours to lay tubing to all of the remaining 70 or so pots. Had also purchased a programmable timer and set it for 15 minutes of irrigation at 6am and 6pm daily. Since we are leaving early tomorrow morning, I had to make sure I was done before 6pm today and then was waiting with baited breath to make sure the timer and all my tubing and connections worked. All systems are go! Will be nice not to have to worry about our plants while we are gone. I need to clean up some of the tubing, you can see some in the far background that I didn’t have a way to pin up and keep out of site. I ran out of fasteners.
  15. Those were golden days. Here’s hoping for a return to that kind of play with this group and staff.
  16. Salute to the dude (Sean C.) who posted those videos. My wife had plans to meet a friend for brunch/shopping this morning/afternoon and I planned on just smoking a bowl and spinning some albums. Opened up HSN and found the links to the game videos and my day was made. Team looks much more energized and just generally into the game. Bates is going to be REALLY, really good. TJD and Race are as expected. Geronimo could also be really special - he just looks dialed in every time. Kopp was the one that really stood out to me - besides Bates. At 9:39 in second half when he forced the turnover, dribbled down the court, and then nailed a three. More of that, please.
  17. Fleeting joy then! It’s still 93 here in Brooklyn right now. 93 doesn’t seem that hot if you live in the south, but all of that asphalt and reflective surfaces make it feel like soup here.
  18. Oh yeah, slugs are d#cks! Hate them. Luckily no trees to worry about with Japanese beetles, so my experience with them is limited.
  19. That’s just a perfect moment for me. Love the drop in temps and the smell as the rain starts.
  20. And yet, we can still get along. I like that. Need much more of that in the good old USA right now.
  21. I’ve always found that the worst pests on our plants come from moths. Total a-holes.
  22. It is tough to avoid and I think most of us try to be nice about it with our fellow IU fans. I’ve always known that I’m an outlier politically here, but am friendly with many on here that I disagree strongly with on this topic. That said, it also snowballs pretty quickly sometimes in this thread.
  23. Me too, some of my favorite memories as a kid was sitting on the front porch with my Dad watching and listening as a big storm rolled in.
  24. Damn, man. I am so sorry to hear this. We call all Goldens “good boys” when we see them out and about - “look at that good boy.” Dexter looks like a REALLY good boy. Being there when they pass is some small comfort (we’ve had to do it twice in the last year), but I still think it’s one of the hardest things to walk away from. My condolences and deepest sympathy to you and your wife. I’ve always thought that the short lifespan of our pets is one of the cruelest things in this life. There will be so many Dexter-sized holes for you two to navigate in these coming weeks. It’s the f*#kin worst.
  25. Definitely not okay with Obama’s party. It’s just a bad look and kind of tacky with Delta raging. And yeah, I hate how this has been so politicized. If it hadn’t been, we would have been doing much better as a country with this.
