i don't buy into Archie not knowing or not caring about IU history. i am trying to comprehend how it makes a difference to constantly be preaching on or telling current players old IU stories. i mean they'd be really cool to me, but will that be the difference in getting us to play better basketball? coach's job is to motivate. they just have to be able to motivate whatever their style is.

i am not arguing that it will hurt us. i just argue that some on here are saying that the players do know who he is. they really don't, but that's not abnormal for college coaches. i'm just saying you can't use that as one of the things Woodson has going for him.

I'm trying to turn my frown upside down, so I will say that the biggest Knicks fan I know says A. Woodson is a great guy who did a lot for the community and B. Is the best coach they had since Pat Riley until they got Thibs.

i did not, but i'd be willing to bet all they know in this area is Coach K and Roy Williams!

UPDATE - I asked each of the starting 5 separately an none had heard of Woodson. The best one who is a D1 recruit said, "Coach, I would be lucky to name 10 current head coaches in the NBA." So, I'm not saying this as a knock on Woodson as they also wouldn't be able to tell me who the coach for Arkansas or Alabama is. I'm just saying I disagree that recruits are going to know who Woodson is unless they grew up in Indiana and their parents were big fans. Actually maybe their grandparents. I'm 47 and don't remember Woodson.

this is what i am wondering, but even more so, is there a reason to think we have a chance at any of them? had any considered IU? any from IN? etc.

they won the 3A state championship this year and have 8 kids who play pretty high level AAU, but only 1 D1. probably 2 or 3 D2 kids, and the rest D3. i'll be surprised if they know who Woodson is, but will ask if i pass them in the hall! if they say, yeah the new Indiana coach, i will ask if they knew who he was before then!

really? that honestly surprises me. not saying you're wrong, but i would think if i walk down the hallway in the high school i teach at and ask players from our bball team who Mike Woodson is, i would think literally none of them would. keep in mind i am in NC and not IN. you think i'm wrong? i'm gonna try it if i see any of them.

really? maybe this is where i'm missing out. i mean this sincerely as i do not follow the NBA. i wouldn't think kids would know who assistant coaches are very often. Woodson really carries that much clout as an assistant for a bad franchise?

Okay, just for kicks, I am going to post all of the optimistic view that I acknowledge could make this great! This is not sarcasm, and this is NOT how I see this playing out, but plausible? Sure... Matta and Brown come in as great advisors and extremely well respected. Woodson has crazy level of support from former players and many of those players will be visible and more involved. All o the excited people are right that Woodson is an offensive genius and at the same time much better at player development than Archie and staff. IN HS and AAU coaches embrace Woodson, Matta, and Brown. We maybe get one more young former IU player to be an assistant. WWW helps us get high level recruits. Woodson may be fun to have out front and talking on talk shows, etc. Trying to think of what I'm leaving out... other than... getting us off on the right foot by recruiting our returning players to stay. I will say again that while I don't think it is an extremely talented group, if we have Lander, Franklin, Hunter, Thompson, TJD with Stewart, Brunk, Duncomb, RP, Leal, Geronimo, and Galloway, that group can win. They will have to progress and also be used extremely well, but here's to hoping...

okay, i know i am taking all negatives, but is it weird to be more excited about the assistants than the head coach? i mean i hope we get an all-star group of assistants, but i wonder how many guy may be assistants that i'd rather see as the head coach?
